Sport Pilot License: No FAA Medical, 20 Hours, $8,400

The sport pilot license is the only FAA pilot certificate you can earn on a valid US driver license instead of a medical certificate. Twenty hours of flight time. One passenger, daylight, and most of Southern California underneath you.

The medical

No FAA medical certificate. A valid driver license takes its place.

Sport pilots fly on a valid United States driver license instead of an FAA medical certificate. That is 14 CFR 61.23(c), and it is the single most important fact on this page. No Aviation Medical Examiner appointment. No MedXPress form. No waiting on a file in Oklahoma City while your instructor keeps a slot open.

That one rule is the reason this certificate exists, and it is why the people who call us about sport pilot training are mostly not twenty-two. They are fifty-eight and on a blood pressure medication. They had a heart procedure in 2019 and were told by someone at a barbecue that flying was over for them. They read four forum threads about special issuance and decided it sounded like a fight they did not have the patience for. Most competing pages bury this in a bullet halfway down. It should be the headline.

The rule has one hard condition, and you need to read it before you spend a dollar. If you have ever had an application for an FAA medical certificate denied, or a certificate suspended or revoked, the driver-license alternative is closed to you until that action is resolved. Never applied at all? Then you are in the clear on that point.

We will not tell you whether you personally qualify. We are not qualified to and we would be guessing with your money. Only an Aviation Medical Examiner or the FAA can make that determination. If there is anything in your history you are unsure about, talk to an AME first and then choose which certificate to train for. And 14 CFR 61.53 still applies either way: you may not act as pilot in command when you know of a medical condition that would make you unsafe. That is a judgement you make before every flight, certificate or no certificate.

Privileges and limits

What a sport pilot can and cannot do

Sport pilot privileges and limitations live in 14 CFR Part 61 Subpart J. Here is the whole list, stated flatly. If one of these lines is a dealbreaker for you, it is better to find that out now than after the deposit.

The limitWhat it actually means on a Saturday morning
One passengerYou plus one other person. Not two friends, not a family of four. The aircraft has two seats and one of them is yours.
Day VFR onlyNo night flying. You need visual conditions and you stay clear of cloud. A flight that lands after sunset is not a sport pilot flight.
10,000 ft MSLOr 2,000 ft AGL, whichever is higher. Enough to cross the San Gabriels on a good day, not enough for a high mountain crossing in summer.
No Class A airspaceClass A starts at 18,000 ft. It was never going to be relevant in a light sport aircraft, but it is in the rule and so it is here.
Towered airports need an endorsementOperating at an airport with an operating control tower, and in Class B, C and D airspace, requires the instructor endorsement in 14 CFR 61.325. At Van Nuys that is not optional. More on this below.
Light-sport aircraft onlyDefined in 14 CFR 1.1: two seats, one reciprocating engine, fixed landing gear on a landplane, and caps on weight and speed. The long-standing figures are 1,320 lb maximum takeoff weight, a 120-knot maximum level-flight speed and a 45-knot maximum stall speed. The FAA has since modernised that definition, so ask us which specific aircraft on this ramp you may fly on a sport certificate rather than assuming.
Not for compensation or hireYou cannot be paid to fly, and you cannot fly in furtherance of a business. Sport pilot is a recreational certificate and the FAA means it.
Hours and money

Twenty hours instead of forty. That is the honest reason it is cheaper.

The FAA minimum for a sport pilot certificate in a single-engine airplane is 20 hours of flight time under 14 CFR 61.313. A private pilot certificate needs 40 under 14 CFR 61.109. Everything else about the price difference follows from that one number.

The 20 hours are not unstructured. At least 15 of them are dual instruction with an authorised instructor and at least 5 are solo, and inside that you fly two hours of cross-country training, a solo cross-country of at least 75 nautical miles with a full-stop landing at two points, and three hours of preparation for the practical test in the two calendar months before you take it.

Our sport pilot package is $8,400. The standard private pilot programme is $10,900. The gap is $2,500, and that gap buys you real privileges rather than a discount — so do not choose sport purely because the number is smaller.

Now the uncomfortable part. Very few people finish at exactly 20 hours, in the same way very few private pilots finish at exactly 40. What decides whether you land near the minimum is not talent, it is frequency. Two or three lessons a week and the hours stay tight. One lesson a fortnight and you spend the first twenty minutes of every flight recovering ground you already paid for. Van Nuys gives you 355 flyable days a year, so the calendar is not your excuse here — your own diary is.

Six reasons to buy the private certificate instead

A page that talks you out of the wrong product has earned the right to sell you the correct one. If any of the following is a description of what you actually want, the sport certificate is the wrong purchase and we would rather say so now.

1

You want to fly your family

Sport pilot carries one passenger. A family of four does not fit, regardless of how many seats the aeroplane has. The private pilot programme at $10,900 is the one that solves this.

2

You want to land after dark

Sport pilot is a day certificate. Half the appeal of flying in Los Angeles is the basin lit up at night, and a sport pilot cannot legally go and look at it.

3

Vegas, and the weather might turn

Cross-country trips where the forecast is marginal are exactly what a private certificate plus an instrument rating at $11,700 is for. Sport pilots stay in visual conditions, full stop.

4

You want to build a career

Commercial and airline flying starts from a private certificate. An unrestricted ATP takes 1,500 hours under 14 CFR 61.159. No part of that path runs through a sport certificate.

5

You want to fly the nice aeroplanes

The Cirrus SR22 Turbo and the Piper Arrow are not light-sport aircraft. If glass panels and retractable gear are the point for you, start on the private track.

6

You would resent the ceiling

Some people take the limits as a sensible frame. Others chafe within a year and pay twice. Be honest about which one you are before you enrol.

Why Van Nuys

You will learn to talk to a control tower, because here you have no choice

Van Nuys is a Class D airport with an operating control tower, sitting under the Class B shelf that belongs to LAX. A sport pilot cannot operate at a towered field, or in Class B, C or D airspace, without the instructor endorsement described in 14 CFR 61.325. At this airport that endorsement is not an optional extra you might get around to. It is how you learn to fly here, from your first few lessons, because you cannot leave the ramp without talking to somebody.

That is a genuine advantage over training at a quiet uncontrolled strip, and it is worth understanding why. A sport pilot who trains somewhere with no tower can finish the certificate without the 61.325 endorsement and then discover that most of the useful airports in Southern California are closed to them. Burbank, Santa Monica, Long Beach, Camarillo on a busy day. Radio work is a skill like landing: it is uncomfortable for about six hours and then it is simply something you do.

We are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, on the west side of the field between Roscoe and Saticoy. Free parking directly outside, no gate code. Open 9am to 9pm, seven days a week. If you want to see the operation before you commit to anything, walk in.

The route

How a sport pilot certificate actually gets earned

Five steps, in order, with nothing invented and nothing skipped.

01

Fly first, decide second

A discovery flight is a real lesson at $229. You handle the controls from the left seat with an instructor beside you, the time is loggable dual instruction, and the full price is credited against any programme if you enrol within 24 hours. Deciding you dislike flying is a perfectly good outcome and a cheap one.

02

Student pilot certificate and paperwork

You apply for a student pilot certificate through IACRA, which your instructor will walk you through. Non-US citizens also need TSA approval before flight training begins — we handle that process constantly and there is a full guide on TSA flight training approval. No FAA medical is involved on the sport track.

03

The flying, plus the tower endorsement

Dual instruction to solo, then the solo and cross-country requirements in 61.313, and along the way the 61.325 endorsement for controlled airspace and towered-airport operations. Ground work runs alongside rather than after, which is what keeps the flight hours from drifting.

04

The sport pilot knowledge test

A computer-based FAA written exam at an approved testing centre. It is its own exam, not the private pilot one, and it is shorter. Our ground school in Los Angeles and the practice material we issue are aimed squarely at passing it the first time.

05

The practical test

An oral examination and a flight with an FAA-designated pilot examiner. Pass it and you are a sport pilot that day, with a temporary certificate in your hand before you leave. Our FAA checkride guide covers what the day looks like start to finish.

The fleet

The aeroplanes on our ramp, and which ones a sport pilot may fly

We own and maintain what you train in. Sport training is flown in a two-seat light sport trainer; the rest of the ramp is what you move into if you carry on past the sport certificate.

Cessna 162 Skycatcher — the two-seat light sport trainer most sport students learn in

Piper Warrior four-seat training aircraft at Van Nuys Airport
Piper Warrior — four seats, and where private pilot students spend most of their hours

Cirrus SR22 Turbo — glass panel and a whole-airframe parachute, flown on the Premium programme
Piper Seminole twin engine training aircraft at Van Nuys Airport
Piper Seminole — the twin, for the multi-engine add-on later on

Sport pilot privileges are limited to light-sport aircraft as defined in 14 CFR 1.1. The Warrior, the Arrow, the SR22 and the Seminole sit outside that definition, which is precisely why the certificate above sport exists. Full detail on the training aircraft at Van Nuys page.

Redbird MCX

The full-motion simulator, and why it matters more on a 20-hour certificate

FAA-approved, fully enclosed, and it moves. When your whole certificate is 20 hours, an hour spent flying badly in the aircraft is expensive. An hour spent making the same mistakes in the simulator, with the instructor able to freeze the scenario and talk, is not.

Radio phraseology, pattern work and emergency drills all transfer straight to the aircraft, and the simulator is never cancelled for weather. A standalone Redbird session is $189 if you want to try one before you enrol.

Your instructor

Career instructors, not hour-builders waiting for a call from an airline

Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and the instructor is legally pilot in command on every flight you take with them. There are eleven of them, which is the difference between a lesson happening on Tuesday and a lesson happening whenever one person has a gap.

You are matched to an instructor, and if the fit is wrong you change. That is a normal request, not a complaint, and nobody here will make it awkward. Sport students in particular often want an instructor who has taught older students before, or someone with the patience for radio work in the first few weeks — say so at the consultation and we will pair you accordingly.

What people say

5.0 ★ · 70 Google reviews

Three things come up again and again in what people write about training here, and none of them is the price.

The debrief, not the flight

The most repeated compliment in our reviews is not the aeroplane and it is not the ramp. It is that somebody sat down afterwards and explained what happened.

Lessons that actually happen

Eleven instructors and a fleet we own and maintain ourselves. Reviewers mention scheduling more than anything else, which tells you what most schools get wrong.

The number does not move

What you enrol at is what you finish at. On an $8,400 package that promise is the entire point, and people write about it because it is not universal.

FAQ

Sport Pilot License: The Questions People Actually Ask

No. Under 14 CFR 61.23(c) a sport pilot may fly using a valid United States driver license instead of an FAA medical certificate. The one hard condition is that you must not have had an FAA medical application denied, or a certificate suspended or revoked. Only an Aviation Medical Examiner or the FAA can tell you where you personally stand.

20 hours of flight time under 14 CFR 61.313, against 40 hours for a private pilot certificate under 61.109. Inside the 20 you need at least 15 hours of dual instruction, 5 hours solo, 2 hours of cross-country training and a solo cross-country of at least 75 nautical miles.

$8,400 at LA Flight School, Van Nuys Airport, as a complete package rather than an hourly rate. That covers the aircraft, your instructor, ground school and simulator time. Financing starts at $2,500 down, and a $229 discovery flight is credited in full if you enrol within 24 hours.

Under 14 CFR Part 61 Subpart J: one passenger maximum, day VFR only, no flight above 10,000 ft MSL or 2,000 ft AGL whichever is higher, no Class A airspace, light-sport aircraft only as defined in 14 CFR 1.1, and no flying for compensation or hire. Towered-airport and Class B, C or D operations require the endorsement in 14 CFR 61.325.

No. Sport pilot privileges are day VFR only, so a flight that lands after sunset is outside the certificate. If night flying matters to you, buy the private pilot certificate instead — it is $10,900 for the standard programme at Van Nuys and carries no daylight restriction.

Yes, with the instructor endorsement in 14 CFR 61.325 for operations at an airport with an operating control tower and in Class B, C and D airspace. Because Van Nuys is a Class D field under the LAX Class B shelf, that endorsement is part of ordinary training here rather than an optional add-on.

Yes. Every hour goes into one logbook and counts toward the 40-hour private pilot minimum in 14 CFR 61.109. Starting sport does not waste money — you add night flying, instrument reference training, a longer cross-country and a third-class medical certificate, then take the private written exam and checkride.

It is worth it if you want to fly one passenger in daylight for pleasure, and it saves you $2,500 against the $10,900 private pilot programme and half the required hours. It is not worth it if you want to fly a family of four, land after dark, or build toward a career — in those cases the private certificate is the correct purchase.

At LA Flight School, 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, Van Nuys, CA 91406, on Van Nuys Airport (KVNY). We are open 9am to 9pm seven days a week, parking is free directly outside, and Van Nuys averages 355 flyable days a year. Call (818) 290-8249.

Most people finish in three to five months flying two or three times a week. Frequency decides it, not talent: a lesson every other week means spending the first part of each flight recovering ground you already paid for, which is how a 20-hour minimum quietly becomes 35 hours.
