TSA Requirements By Citizenship

US Citizens: Prove It Once, Done Forever
Before certificate training begins, federal rules require your school to verify citizenship: a valid US passport, or an original birth certificate plus government photo ID. We photocopy, endorse your logbook, and you never think about it again.

International Students: The TSA FTSP
Non-US citizens complete the TSA's Flight Training Security Program (formerly AFSP) before starting certificate training: create an account at fts.tsa.dhs.gov, submit a training request naming the school, pay the TSA fee, and submit fingerprints. Approval typically takes days to a few weeks.

What Doesn't Need TSA Clearance
Discovery flights and demo lessons don't require citizenship documentation or FTSP approval — so you can start with a $229 flight while paperwork processes.

Visas Are A Separate Question
FTSP approval is not a visa. International students should contact us before enrolling so we can talk through eligibility, program fit and timelines for your situation honestly.

For US citizens the whole thing happens at your first enrollment visit. For international students, we recommend starting your FTSP request two to four weeks before you want to begin certificate training — and flying discovery flights and simulator sessions in the meantime, since those need no clearance at all.
One caution from experience: don't book intensive training dates before your approval arrives. The TSA timeline is usually quick but never guaranteed, and a compressed schedule with no clearance is how students burn deposits at less careful schools.

Not an application — just one-time proof of citizenship (passport, or birth certificate plus photo ID) before certificate training begins. It takes five minutes at enrollment.
