SAFETY FIRST
Very safety and detail oriented. Pre-flight briefing explained everything there was. To my knowledge, this flight school is exceptional in their ability.

We train pilots from Studio City at Van Nuys Airport, about 15 to 20 minutes west on the 101. A $229 discovery flight is a real lesson — you fly the aircraft, the hour is logged, and the full price comes off your program if you enrol within 24 hours.

Fifteen to twenty minutes, off-peak. The 101 west out of Studio City, exit at Balboa Blvd, north for a couple of minutes, and you are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A. That is the entire route. No pass to climb, no canyon, no coastal detour — you stay on the valley floor the whole way.
If the freeway is ugly, Ventura Blvd does the same job. West through Sherman Oaks and Encino, right on Balboa. It is slower on paper and often faster in practice between four and seven in the evening, and it drops you at the same door.
Park in the lot on Balboa. There is no structure, no validation, no shuttle from a distant garage. Walk in, meet your instructor, and the preflight starts at the aircraft rather than at a security desk.
Here is the honest arithmetic on the drive, because people overweight it. A lesson is a three-hour commitment once you count the weather brief, the preflight walkaround, the flight itself and the debrief afterwards. Twenty minutes of driving each way is about a fifth of that. Students who chose a closer field to save fifteen minutes usually discover they traded away the thing that actually governs progress, which is whether an aircraft and an instructor are free on the day they can fly.
We train pilots from Studio City at Van Nuys Airport, about 15 minutes away, along with students from Sherman Oaks, North Hollywood, Toluca Lake and the rest of the south-east valley.

Studio City sits next door to Universal City and the studios, and a lot of the people who call us from this zip code work production hours.
That sounds like a scheduling obstacle. It is close to the opposite. The two slots that are most reliable at Van Nuys — mid-morning and early afternoon — are exactly the slots a person on a nine-to-five cannot take. They are the least contested times on the schedule, they are the times the marine layer has already cleared, and they are when the aircraft you want is most likely to be sitting free.
Someone shooting nights, or between projects, or on a schedule that moves every few weeks, can book the 10am and the 1pm. The Saturday-morning crowd is fighting over the 8am. If your calendar bends, use it.
The other half of that is the pace we recommend for people with unpredictable weeks. Two lessons a week is the sweet spot for retention; one lesson every two weeks means you spend the first half of each flight re-learning what you already knew. If your work comes in bursts, book heavily during the quiet stretch and accept a gap during the busy one, rather than trying to hold a rigid weekly slot you will keep cancelling. Eleven instructors and a fleet we own is what makes that flexible booking survive contact with reality.
Van Nuys is a Class D field sitting under the LAX Class B shelf, and it is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world. That is the argument for training here, not against it.
From your first lesson you are talking to a real tower on a real frequency with real traffic behind you. You learn sequencing, you learn to read back a hold-short clearance and mean it, you learn what a base-leg extension for spacing feels like. Students who learn at quiet fields get all of that later, in a rush, usually the week before a checkride, and it shows.
Van Nuys also has two parallel runways, full-length taxiways, an operating control tower with long hours, and instrument approaches you will use again when you come back for the instrument rating. Nothing about the field is a training-only environment you outgrow.
The trade-off is real and we will not pretend otherwise. It is busy. On some mornings you will sit third for departure and burn eight or nine minutes of Hobbs time holding short. On a Saturday in spring it can be worse. If the only thing you cared about was minimising taxi time you would train somewhere quieter and be a worse radio operator for it. We think the exchange is worth making, and it is one more reason the mid-morning and early-afternoon slots are the ones to take.
The fleet is ours. Eleven instructors are on staff. Between those two facts, a booked lesson usually happens — which matters far more to your total cost than the hourly number on any price list.

The standard training departure out of Van Nuys sends you north-west, over the Sepulveda Basin and out toward the open ground at the west end of the valley. That is where the airwork happens: steep turns, stalls, slow flight, ground reference over the basin.
So from Studio City, your training area lies in the opposite direction from home. Your cross-countries head away from the Cahuenga Pass and out toward the coast and the Conejo Valley — Camarillo, Santa Paula, up the 101 corridor by air. You will be looking at country you have only ever seen through a windscreen at freeway speed.
Studio City itself sits at the south-east corner of the valley, right up against the Cahuenga Pass and the Hollywood Hills, with Universal City and the studios immediately east. That geography is easy to identify from the air and it becomes your orientation anchor early. Most students from this side of the valley can pick out the pass and the ridgeline within their first two or three lessons, which makes the whole valley snap into place.

We measured it rather than guessing. Twelve months of NOAA observations at Van Nuys, 1 August 2025 to 1 August 2026.
Van Nuys recorded 355 flyable days against a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility — the standard most schools apply to student solo and early dual work. Santa Monica managed 343. Torrance managed 332. Against basic VFR minimums of 1,000 ft and 3 miles, Van Nuys came in at 363 days. The method and the raw tables are published in full.
Those gaps come from one thing: the marine layer, and which side of the Santa Monica Mountains you are on. Studio City is inland. The hills between you and the ocean do most of the work, and by the time the layer has pushed over the ridge it is usually thin and usually gone.
The number that actually changes how you book is the hourly one. In June, only 40% of 7am observations at Van Nuys met training minimums. By 11am that was 93%. From 1pm it sat at 97 to 100%. In August at 7am, Van Nuys was flyable 84% of the time while Santa Monica managed 48%.
Read that as a scheduling instruction. A dawn lesson in late spring is a coin toss. The same lesson at 11am or 1pm is close to a certainty. If you can move your flying into the middle of the day — and if you work production hours in Studio City, you probably can — you will cancel far less often than the average student, and cancellations are what stretch a six-month certificate into eighteen.
One page, one airport, every certificate. No quote form, no “call for pricing”.
Start with a discovery flight. It is $229 for 60 minutes and it is not a scenic tour. You sit in the left seat, you handle the controls, and the time is loggable dual instruction that counts toward your certificate. Enrol within 24 hours and the full amount comes off your program.
The private pilot certificate is the one almost everyone wants. FAR 61.109 sets the legal minimum at 40 hours; the national average is 60 to 75. Our Standard program is built on 40 logged hours at $10,900. The Comprehensive program is built on 60 and costs $15,900, and it is the one most students finish in without paying anything extra. The Premium program flies the Cirrus SR22 Turbo with a full glass cockpit at $22,500.
Sport pilot at $8,400 is the shorter route if you want to fly light aircraft in daytime VFR and never intend to carry four people to Mammoth. It is a real certificate with real limits. Read them before you pick it.
The Solo Certificate at $5,500 exists for people who want to prove to themselves they can do this before committing to a full program. You train to first solo and stop there if you want to.
Instrument rating at $11,700 is the rating that makes a private certificate genuinely useful in Los Angeles, because it turns a June morning at Van Nuys from a cancellation into a departure. Multi-engine is a $5,100 add-on flown in the Piper Seminole. Commercial and the zero-to-airline track run to $89,000 for the full path from no licence to airline-ready.
Teen aviation takes students aged 10 to 15 at $4,200. They are too young to solo an aeroplane, and they can still fly the aircraft, learn the airspace and build real hours. Redbird simulator sessions are $189 and are the cheapest hour in aviation for procedures, instrument scan and emergencies.
Enrolled students fly on package pricing at $179 an hour, wet, single-engine.

Not a broker’s rental and not a tired airframe with twelve thousand hours on it. Every aeroplane here is ours, inspected on our schedule, and flown by our instructors daily.

Single-engine training on the Standard and Comprehensive programs is flown in the Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft. The Premium program is flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo.
A full-motion Redbird MCX, FAA-approved and fully enclosed. It moves, it fails engines on you, and it never gets cancelled for wind.
Simulator time is built into every private pilot program: 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. Extra sessions are $189.
Eleven instructors on staff. Every one holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and the instructor is legally pilot in command on every flight you make with them.
The number matters more than it sounds. A school with two instructors cancels when one is sick, one is on a checkride, or one takes a week off. A school with eleven does not. If you can only fly Tuesdays at 10am, that slot has to survive someone else’s holiday.
You are matched to one instructor and you keep them, because continuity is worth a great deal in the middle of a syllabus. If the fit is wrong — and sometimes it is, for reasons that have nothing to do with competence — say so and we will move you. Nobody will make it awkward. A student who does not want to be in the aircraft with their instructor learns slowly and quits early.
What our reviews mention most is not the aircraft and not the price. It is the debrief. The twenty minutes after the engine stops is where the lesson actually gets learned.

On Google, the same three things come up again and again.
The most repeated compliment is not the aeroplane and not the price. It is the debrief after the flight.
Eleven instructors and a fleet we own means the slot you booked is the slot you fly. Reviewers from the valley mention this constantly.
The number you enrol at is the number you finish at. No mid-program repricing, no surprise fuel surcharge.
Same syllabus, same instructors, same airport. The difference is how many hours are in the package and what you fly.
The legal minimum path under FAR 61.109. Right for people who can fly two or three times a week and keep momentum.
Built around what people actually take, not the legal minimum. Most students finish inside this package without paying a cent more.
The whole certificate flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, glass cockpit and CAPS parachute included.
Financing from $2,500 down, with monthly plans through Stratus Financial and in-house. Enrolled students fly at $179 an hour, wet.
Book the 60-minute discovery flight. You fly it, the hour is logged, and the whole $229 comes off your program if you enrol within 24 hours. If you would rather talk money first, the consultation is free and it happens at the airport.
The nearest full-service flight school to Studio City is LA Flight School at Van Nuys Airport, 7900 Balboa Blvd, about 15 to 20 minutes west on the 101. We run private pilot, instrument, commercial, multi-engine, sport pilot and teen courses from one location, and a 60-minute discovery flight is $229.
Fifteen to twenty minutes off-peak. Take the 101 west and exit at Balboa Blvd, or use Ventura Blvd west through Sherman Oaks and Encino if the freeway is backed up. Both routes end at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, where you park in the lot and walk to the aircraft.
Our Standard private pilot program is $10,900 for 40 logged hours, the Comprehensive program is $15,900 for 60 logged hours, and the Premium program flown in a Cirrus SR22 Turbo is $22,500. Financing starts at $2,500 down. Most students finish inside the Comprehensive package, which is why it is the one we recommend.
A discovery flight is a real first lesson, not a sightseeing ride. You sit in the left seat, you fly the aircraft, and the 60 minutes is loggable dual instruction that counts toward your certificate. The full $229 is credited against any program if you enrol within 24 hours, so it costs nothing if you continue.
The standard training departure from Van Nuys heads north-west over the Sepulveda Basin toward the open west end of the valley, which is where steep turns, stalls and slow flight are practised. Cross-country flights from there run out toward the coast and the Conejo Valley, so from Studio City you fly away from home rather than over it.
Van Nuys recorded 355 flyable days in the twelve months to August 2026, measured against a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility. Santa Monica recorded 343 and Torrance 332. The method and the raw observation tables are published at /pages/flyable-days-flight-training-study.
Far less than it does on the Westside. Studio City is inland and the Santa Monica Mountains block most of the layer. Even so, in June only 40% of 7am observations at Van Nuys met training minimums, rising to 93% at 11am and 97 to 100% from 1pm, so book mid-morning or early afternoon in late spring.
Mid-morning and early afternoon. From 1pm in June, 97 to 100% of observations at Van Nuys met training minimums against just 40% at 7am. Those slots are also less contested than evenings and weekends, so the aircraft and instructor you want are more likely to be free.
Yes. The teen aviation course takes students aged 10 to 15 and costs $4,200. They cannot solo an aeroplane at that age, but they fly the aircraft, learn the airspace and build genuine logged time that carries forward into a private pilot program later.
Sport pilot is $8,400, the Solo Certificate is $5,500, the instrument rating is $11,700, the multi-engine add-on in the Piper Seminole is $5,100, and the zero-to-airline program is $89,000. A Redbird MCX full-motion simulator session is $189 and can be booked on its own.
It is busy, and that is deliberate. Van Nuys is a Class D field under the LAX Class B shelf and one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, so you work a real tower frequency from lesson one. The honest cost is that some mornings you hold short longer than you would at a quiet field.
Two lessons a week is the pace that holds skills together; one every two weeks means you spend half of each flight recovering ground. If your work comes in bursts, book heavily during quiet stretches rather than defending a fixed weekly slot. With eleven instructors on staff, that kind of flexible booking is workable.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
