Piper Seminole twin-engine trainer at Van Nuys Airport used for multi-engine rating training
Requirements

Multi-Engine Rating Requirements

14 CFR 61.63(c) sets the requirements for adding a multi-engine class rating, and it contains no hour minimum and no additional knowledge test. What it does require is an instructor endorsement of competence and proficiency, and a practical test at the level of the certificate you already hold.

0hours required by 14 CFR 61.63(c)
0additional FAA knowledge tests — 61.63(c)(4)
10–15 hrswhat most current pilots actually need
5.0 ★100+ Google reviews
The short answer

What Are The Requirements For A Multi-Engine Rating?

You must hold a pilot certificate already, receive a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor attesting that you are competent in the relevant aeronautical knowledge areas and proficient in the relevant areas of operation, and pass a practical test. That is 14 CFR 61.63(c) in full, and it sets no training time and requires no additional knowledge test.

This is unusual and it catches people out in both directions. Pilots who expect an hour requirement go looking for one and find 14 CFR 61.129(b), which is a different regulation for a different situation. Pilots who hear “no minimum” sometimes assume the rating is trivial, which it is not — the standard is proficiency, and proficiency in asymmetric flight takes most people ten to fifteen hours.

The class rating you are adding is airplane multiengine land, AMEL. It attaches to the certificate you hold, and it carries that certificate's privileges. A private pilot with an AMEL rating may fly friends in a twin and may not be paid; a commercial pilot with one may be paid.

Because the requirement is proficiency rather than time, the honest answer to “how long will it take me?” depends almost entirely on how current you are when you arrive. That is also why our price is $5,100 for the rating rather than an hourly figure with an assumed hour count under it.

The regulation

14 CFR 61.63(c), Paragraph By Paragraph

Four short paragraphs govern the whole thing. It is worth reading them once yourself.

ParagraphWhat it requires
61.63(c)(1)A logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor attesting that you were found competent in the aeronautical knowledge areas and proficient in the areas of operation appropriate to the class rating sought.
61.63(c)(2)That you pass the practical test.
61.63(c)(3)That you need not meet the specified training time requirements that apply to the certificate for the class rating sought. This is the paragraph that removes the hour minimum.
61.63(c)(4)That you need not take an additional knowledge test, provided you already hold an airplane, rotorcraft, powered-lift, weight-shift-control, powered parachute or airship rating at that pilot certificate level.

Read 61.63(c)(3) twice. It is the reason a multi-engine add-on is the smallest check in professional flight training and the most misunderstood one to shop for.

Before you start

What You Need In Hand On Day One

Bring all of it to the first session and the endorsements get sorted then rather than on a second trip.

ItemDetail
A pilot certificatePrivate, commercial or ATP with an airplane category rating. The multi-engine class attaches to it.

No minimum hoursNone. 14 CFR 61.63(c)(3) removes them.
A complex endorsement, if you do not already hold oneOur Seminole has retractable gear, flaps and controllable-pitch propellers, so 14 CFR 61.31(e) requires a one-time logbook endorsement before you act as pilot in command of it. We give it during the rating.

No type rating is involved. 14 CFR 61.31(a) requires type ratings for large aircraft, turbojet-powered airplanes and powered-lift, none of which describes a piston twin under 12,500 pounds.

The other regulation

When Do Hour Requirements Actually Apply?

Only when the certificate itself is being earned in a multiengine airplane. That is 14 CFR 61.129(b), the commercial pilot certificate with an airplane multiengine class rating, and it is a substantially larger set of requirements.

61.129(b) opens with 250 hours of flight time as a pilot. 61.129(b)(1) requires 100 hours in powered aircraft of which 50 must be in airplanes. 61.129(b)(2) requires 100 hours of pilot-in-command time including 50 in airplanes and 50 of cross-country of which at least 10 are in airplanes.

61.129(b)(3) requires 20 hours of training on the areas of operation with an authorized instructor. Inside it: ten hours of instrument training, of which five must be in a multiengine airplane; ten hours of training in a multiengine complex or turbine-powered airplane; a two-hour daytime cross-country of more than 100 nautical miles in a multiengine airplane; a two-hour night one; and three hours of test preparation within the preceding two calendar months.

61.129(b)(4) requires ten hours of solo flight in a multiengine airplane, or ten hours performing the duties of pilot in command in one with an authorized instructor on board, including a cross-country of at least 300 nautical miles with landings at three points and five hours of night flying with ten takeoffs and ten landings at an airport with an operating control tower.

If you already hold a commercial certificate and want to add the multi-engine class, none of that applies to you. 61.63(c) does. The commercial multi-engine add-on page compares the two routes with the money attached.

What you have to be able to do

The Proficiency Standard, In Plain Terms

“Proficient in the areas of operation” means these things, flown to the standards in the Airman Certification Standards for the certificate you hold.

1

Fly The Airplane Normally

Takeoffs, landings, steep turns, slow flight and stalls in a heavier, faster airplane with two of everything to manage. Two or three hours for most pilots.

2

Handle An Engine Failure On The Ground Roll And Just After Lift-Off

Recognize, decide and act. Before VMC the answer is to stop; after lift-off it is control, performance, checklist.

3

Identify, Verify And Feather

Dead foot, dead engine. Close the throttle you believe is dead to confirm. Only then touch the propeller control, and look at it while you do.

4

Fly Accurately On One Engine

Blue line held, zero sideslip flown, turns and configuration changes managed while the workload is high.

5

Demonstrate VMC

Above 3,000 feet AGL, recognizing the onset and recovering by reducing power on the operating engine and lowering the nose, within the ACS bank limit of 20 degrees.

6

Explain All Of It

The oral is longer than pilots expect precisely because there is no written test in front of it. Expect VMC, the critical engine and single-engine performance to dominate it.

Timeline

How The Requirements Turn Into A Schedule

Ten to fifteen hours, four blocks, and the whole thing inside two weeks if you can fly consecutive mornings.

01

Ground And Systems, Before You Fly

Fuel and crossfeed, electrical, propeller governors, feathering, gear, and the aerodynamics of asymmetric flight. The examiner spends most of the oral here, so it comes first.

02

Hours 1 To 3 — Flying The Airplane

Normal operations to the standard of the certificate you already hold. Resetting the sight picture and learning to manage two of everything.

03

Hours 4 To 10 — Engine-Out Work

The rating. Failures on takeoff and in cruise, drag demonstrations, the VMC demonstration, single-engine approaches flown to a full stop, and the instrument tasks if you hold an instrument rating.

04

Hours 11 To 15 — Polish And Rehearsal

A mock oral run by an instructor who did not teach you, then the full practical profile flown in the order an examiner runs it. If you are not ready we add hours; the $5,100 does not move.

The fleet

What The Requirements Are Met In

One conventional twin, so no center-thrust limitation attaches, plus the single-engine fleet behind it.

The Piper Seminole carries no hourly figure and is flown inside the $5,100 add-on. Single-engine training aircraft are $179 an hour wet for enrolled students.

Redbird MCX

Meeting The Proficiency Standard Without Burning Twin Time

The Redbird MCX is full-motion and FAA-approved, and it is where the checklist flows get built.

Proficiency is a habit, and habits are built by repetition. Repetition in the simulator costs a fraction of repetition in the airplane. Standalone sessions are $189; multi-engine students use it inside the $5,100.

Your instructor

Who Signs The 61.63(c)(1) Endorsement

The instructor who endorses you is the one putting their certificate behind the claim that you are competent and proficient, which is why 14 CFR 61.195(f) exists. It forbids an instructor from giving training toward a certificate or rating in a multiengine airplane unless they hold at least five hours of pilot-in-command time in that specific make and model.

Every instructor here holds a commercial or airline transport certificate plus a flight instructor certificate and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight. There are eleven of them, which is the practical reason a rating with a two-week schedule finishes in two weeks.

You are matched to an instructor and you can change if the fit is wrong. On a rating this short, three canceled slots is not an inconvenience, it is a month.

What people say

5.0 ★ · 100+ Google Reviews

What people write about after this rating is the ground school, which is the right thing to be writing about.

★

The Debrief, Not The Flight

The compliment that comes up most often in our reviews is not the airplane and it is not the ramp. It is that somebody sat down afterwards and drew the yaw on a whiteboard until it made sense.

★

Lessons That Actually Happen

Eleven instructors and a fleet we own and maintain. On a rating you are trying to finish inside two weeks, a school that cancels twice is the difference between done and half-done.

★

The Number Does Not Move

What you enroll at is what you finish at. On a $5,100 add-on that promise is most of the point, and reviewers keep writing about it because it is not universal.

FAQ

Multi-Engine Rating Requirement Questions

14 CFR 61.63(c) requires three things: a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor attesting to your competence in the relevant knowledge areas and proficiency in the relevant areas of operation, a passed practical test, and nothing else. 61.63(c)(3) removes any training time requirement and 61.63(c)(4) removes the additional knowledge test.

There is no legal minimum. Most current pilots reach checkride standard in ten to fifteen hours, and that compresses into about two weeks of consecutive mornings. The number depends far more on how current you are on arrival than on anything else.

No. 14 CFR 61.63(c)(4) excuses an additional FAA knowledge test for anyone who already holds an airplane rating at that pilot certificate level. The oral examination on checkride day is longer and more demanding than most pilots expect, precisely because there is no written in front of it.

No, and the FAA does not require it. But if you hold an instrument rating and add the multi-engine class without demonstrating instrument tasks in a twin, the certificate is issued with an Airplane Multiengine VFR Only limitation. Appendix 1 of the Commercial Pilot – Airplane ACS carries the removal task table. We fly the instrument tasks during the rating so it never appears.

A required task in which you slow the airplane with asymmetric thrust until the onset of a loss of directional control, then recover. 14 CFR 1.2 defines VMC as the minimum control speed with the critical engine inoperative. It is flown above 3,000 feet AGL and the ACS holds the recovery to no more than 20 degrees of bank.

The regulation is the same — 14 CFR 61.63(c) — but the practical test is flown to the standards of the certificate you hold, so a commercial applicant is held to tighter tolerances. Neither has an hour minimum for the class addition.

Only if the commercial pilot certificate itself is being earned in a multiengine airplane. Then 250 hours apply, including five hours of instrument training in a multi, ten hours of training in a multiengine complex or turbine-powered airplane, two 2-hour cross-countries in a multi, and ten hours of solo or pilot-in-command duties in one.

For our Seminole, yes. It has retractable landing gear, flaps and controllable-pitch propellers, and 14 CFR 61.31(e) requires ground and flight training plus a one-time logbook endorsement before you act as pilot in command of a complex airplane. It is given during the rating.

No. 14 CFR 61.31(a) requires type ratings for large aircraft, turbojet-powered airplanes and powered-lift. A piston twin under 12,500 pounds needs the airplane multiengine land class rating and, if complex, the 61.31(e) endorsement.

A Piper Seminole: a conventional twin with counter-rotating propellers, so it has no critical engine, and wing-mounted engines, so no center-thrust limitation attaches to your certificate. It carries no hourly figure; twin flying is priced inside the $5,100 add-on.

$5,100 here, fixed at enrollment, covering Seminole time, instruction, ground and systems work, simulator time and checkride preparation. The designated pilot examiner is booked and paid by you directly. Financing starts from $2,500 down.

Tell us before you enroll. Ten to fifteen hours is enough to learn asymmetric flight but not enough to also repair rusty basic handling, and the low-cost fix is two hours in a single first. The $5,100 does not change either way, but your calendar will.
