Flying by instruments in clouds and weather — $11,700, and effectively mandatory for any commercial career.
Build to 250 total hours while mastering commercial maneuvers and precision standards. Add the multi-engine rating ($5,100) and complex/high-performance endorsements along the way — airlines and charter operators expect them.
Most new commercial pilots earn the flight instructor certificate and teach: $40–$75+/hr in LA while logging 60–80 hours a month toward the 1,500-hour airline minimum.
At 1,500 hours (R-ATP paths can be less) the airlines call — and they have been calling: hiring remains strong and first-year regional pay commonly exceeds $90,000. Charter, survey, camera-ship and corporate flying hire earlier.
For the commercial certificate: be 18 or older, hold a private certificate and (practically) an instrument rating, log 250 total hours with specific cross-country and night experience, pass the 100-question commercial written, and fly the commercial checkride to tighter tolerances than the private. That's the whole list.
What's not on it: a college degree. Airlines dropped four-year-degree requirements years ago — hours, certificates and a clean checkride record are what count. You also don't need military experience, perfect uncorrected vision, or youth: career changers in their 30s and 40s graduate from our program into flying jobs regularly.
The honest math for a career changer: roughly $89,000 all-in through CFI with our zero-to-airline program, 18–24 months of focused work, and financing through Stratus Financial that most career students use. Compare that to the lifetime earnings of a captain and it is one of the best-returning career investments available without a degree.

250 total hours for the commercial certificate under Part 61. Airline jobs require 1,500 hours (ATP), which most pilots build as paid flight instructors in 12–18 months.
Training consistently: 8–14 months from zero to the commercial certificate, 18–24 months to airline-eligible. Part-time paths take 2–4 years.
No — not for the certificate and not for the airlines. Majors and regionals hire on hours, certificates and record.
First-year regional airline pay commonly exceeds $90,000; senior captains at majors earn $300,000+. LA flight instructors building hours gross $50,000–$80,000.
Be paid to fly: instruction, charter, survey, camera ships, corporate and — with 1,500 hours — the airlines. The certificate is the legal line between flying for fun and flying for a living.
Airlines have a mandatory retirement of 65, so a 40-year-old career changer still gets a 20+ year flying career. Our program regularly graduates career changers in their 30s and 40s.
