Saying It Plainly
We Cannot Take Your GI Bill, And We Would Rather Tell You Now Than After A Tour
Veterans call us about this regularly, and the answer has never changed. VA education benefits for flight training are administered through approved programs, and approval for standalone flight schools generally requires the school to operate under Part 141 with approval from a State Approving Agency. We operate under Part 61. That means no VA-approved flight program here, no certificate of eligibility processed here, and no entitlement drawn down here.
There are flight schools that are vague about this until a veteran has already paid a deposit. There are also schools that imply a partnership or a pathway that turns out to mean nothing. If any school tells you it accepts GI Bill funding, ask for the WEAMS listing and the name of the approved program. That is a thirty-second check and it settles the question.
None of which means your benefit is useless, or that a Part 61 school is a bad idea. It means the sequencing matters, and the sequencing is where most of the money gets saved or wasted. Everything below is our understanding of how the rules work — the VA is the authority on your entitlement, not us, so verify all of it at VA.gov or with a VA education counselor before you commit.

How It Works
VA Benefits And Flight Training, In Plain Terms
Chapter numbers, coverage, and the exclusions that catch people out. Rules and figures change each academic year — check the current position with the VA.
The Two Routes The Benefit Can Take
Flight training reaches VA funding through one of two doors, and they behave very differently.
- Degree-linked programs. A college or university offering an aviation degree with a flight component. The flight training is part of an approved degree, which generally makes it eligible under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and it comes with the housing allowance and book stipend attached to being enrolled at an institution of higher learning. This is the route most veterans end up using.
- Standalone vocational flight schools. A flight school with no degree attached can be approved for VA benefits, but approval generally requires the school to operate under Part 141 and to be approved by the State Approving Agency in its state. Benefits at this kind of provider are subject to an annual cap for flight training that the VA adjusts each year, and the housing allowance treatment differs from the degree route.
The Exclusions That Surprise People
- The private pilot certificate is generally not covered at vocational flight schools. VA rules have long treated the private certificate as a prerequisite you are expected to hold before benefits fund subsequent training. In practice that means most veterans pay for their PPL themselves regardless of which school they choose.
- You generally need a valid FAA medical certificate appropriate to the training before benefits will fund it. Get the medical first, not last.
- Benefits pay approved charges, not everything. Items charged by third parties typically sit outside the approved program cost wherever you train.
- Different chapters behave differently. Post-9/11 (Chapter 33), Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30), and Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31) each have their own rules, reimbursement structures and approval requirements. Chapter 31 in particular is a rehabilitation program rather than an education benefit and is decided case by case with a counselor.
- Entitlement is finite. Post-9/11 entitlement is measured in months and it does not come back. Spending it on the cheapest, most commoditised part of the training ladder is usually a poor trade.
How To Verify Any School's Claim In Thirty Seconds
Ask for two things: the school's facility code and the exact name of the VA-approved program. Then check it yourself in the VA's WEAMS institution search. An approved program appears by name. A partnership, an affiliation, or a plan to apply does not.
We fail that test. We are telling you so on our own website, which we think is the more useful thing to do.

The GI Bill Pays For You To Become A Pilot
It pays approved charges at approved programs, usually excluding the private certificate, and at vocational schools within an annual cap. It is a substantial contribution toward a career path, not a free license.

Part 141 Training Is Better Training
Part 141 and Part 61 produce the identical FAA certificate to the identical standard. The difference is a fixed FAA-approved syllabus versus a flexible one. Part 141 matters for VA approval and for restricted-ATP eligibility, not for quality.

You Should Use Your Benefit As Soon As Possible
Post-9/11 entitlement has a use-by rule depending on your service dates, so timing is real — but burning months on a private certificate the VA would not have funded anyway is the more common mistake. Talk to a VA education counselor before you sequence anything.

Approval runs through the State Approving Agency and, for standalone flight schools, generally requires Part 141. It is not a form a school fills in over a weekend.

Part 61 and Part 141 are certificated to the identical FAA standard and produce the identical certificate. What differs is the syllabus structure and VA approval, not the aircraft or the examiner.

A Full-Motion Simulator, And It Is Not A Toy
For anyone coming out of a service background, this is the part of the school that will feel most familiar. FAA-approved, fully enclosed, and it moves — procedures, instrument scan, radio work and emergencies all transfer straight to the aircraft, and it is never canceled for weather.
Simulator hours are built into every private pilot program — 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. A standalone Redbird session is $189.
Your Instructor
Career Instructors, Not Hour-Builders Passing Through
Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and the instructor is legally pilot in command on every flight. Several have military backgrounds, and if that matters to you, ask for one at the consultation.
There are eleven of them, so you are not waiting on one person's calendar. That is worth checking wherever you end up training, VA-approved or not, because scheduling is what decides how long a certificate takes.

Talk To A VA Education Counselor Before You Spend A Day Of Entitlement
Not a flight school, and not a forum. Your chapter, your remaining months, your delimiting date and whether Chapter 31 applies to you are all things only the VA can answer, and the answer changes what the rest of this plan should look like.

Decide Whether You Want A Career Or A Hobby, Honestly
If you want to fly for a living, the degree-linked route or an approved Part 141 program is very likely the right use of the benefit, and you should go and find one. If you want to fly at weekends, the benefit is largely beside the point — no VA program is designed to fund recreational flying, and you should be comparing schools on what their programs include and how well they schedule.

Get Your Medical Before Anything Else
First class if you have professional intent, third class otherwise, from an Aviation Medical Examiner. A veteran with a service-connected condition should establish where they stand medically before committing entitlement, money or time to any program anywhere.

If You Are Paying Privately, Buy A Package Rather Than An Hourly Meter
Since the private certificate is usually outside vocational flight benefits anyway, this is the one piece almost everyone pays for out of pocket. If a VA-approved school gives you a better number for the same inclusions, take it.

Generally no. VA approval for standalone flight training is tied to Part 141 programs approved by a State Approving Agency. LA Flight School is a Part 61 school and is not a VA-approved flight training provider, so GI Bill entitlement cannot be used here. We would rather say that on our own website than after you have driven to Van Nuys.
