We train pilots from Pasadena at Van Nuys Airport, about 35 minutes away. The route is the 134 west, the 170 north for barely a mile, then the 101 south and off at Balboa. Thirty minutes when the freeway is behaving. Closer to forty if you leave at eight on a Tuesday morning.
The 134 corridor is one of the more reliable drives in Los Angeles outside peak. It does not have the single chokepoint that makes the Sepulveda Pass unpredictable, and it holds a steady speed through most of the day. That predictability matters more than the raw minutes. A drive you can trust means you book a one o’clock lesson and you are actually on the ramp at one. A drive you cannot trust costs you the aircraft, because another student is already waiting for it.
Set the drive against what a lesson actually is. A flight lesson is a three-hour commitment: preflight and fuel, a briefing on what you are about to attempt, an hour to ninety minutes in the air, then a debrief while it is still fresh in your hands. Thirty-five minutes of freeway is a small share of that. People who quit over the drive almost never quit over the drive — they quit because they booked short slots twice a week and the arithmetic stopped working.
Parking is on site at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, on the Van Nuys field. You walk out to the ramp from the office. We are open 9am to 9pm, seven days.

Pasadena sits in the San Gabriel Valley, east of the basin, with the San Gabriel Mountains rising immediately to the north. They are not scenery. For a student pilot they are a weather machine parked at the end of the street.
Terrain that steep and that close makes its own conditions. Air forced up the south face comes down the other side as turbulence. Thermals build fast over sun-baked slopes on a warm afternoon, and local wind gets bent into shapes that never appear in a forecast written for the basin. For a pilot with a few hundred hours that is interesting flying. For someone on lesson four, trying to hold altitude within a hundred feet while also getting a radio call right, it is a tax on every hour you have paid for.
That is the honest case for learning at a field that is not tucked underneath them. Van Nuys sits in the middle of the San Fernando Valley with the practice area out to the west and northwest, away from the high ground. Your early lessons happen in air that is doing one thing at a time, which is the only condition under which anyone learns to fly an airplane smoothly.
You should still learn mountain flying. Do it deliberately, on a lesson built for it, with an instructor talking you through what the air is doing — not by accident on the day you were supposed to be learning slow flight.

The closest field wins on drive time and loses on almost everything else that decides whether you finish.
El Monte (KEMT) is the nearest small field to Pasadena, and plenty of people have learned to fly there. In our own twelve-month study it recorded 342 flyable days against 355 at Van Nuys. Thirteen days is not a rounding error when you are trying to fly twice a week and every cancellation pushes your checkride further out.
The larger difference is what you get exposed to. Van Nuys is a Class D field sitting under the Class B shelf that surrounds LAX, and it is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world. The tower frequency is genuinely busy from lesson one. You sequence with jets, helicopters and other trainers, and you read a clearance back correctly the first time because there is no room for a second attempt. Pilots trained here do not tense up at a Class C airport later. The radio was never the optional part.
Here is the trade-off, stated plainly. It is busy, and busy has a cost. Some mornings you will hold short for six or seven minutes while three departures go ahead of you, and at a quiet uncontrolled field you would already be airborne. We think that is a fair price for the airmanship it buys, and we schedule around the peaks. But you should hear it from us now rather than discover it in month two.
The thing that actually holds a schedule together is capacity. Eleven instructors, and a fleet we own and maintain on our own schedule rather than renting from a broker. When an instructor is out or an aircraft is down for its 100-hour inspection under FAR 91.409(b), your lesson moves to another instructor or another airplane. It does not move to next week.
We measured it instead of guessing. Twelve months of NOAA ASOS observations at Van Nuys, 1 August 2025 to 1 August 2026.
The test was a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility, which is the threshold most schools apply to student solo and early dual work. Van Nuys came out at 355 days. The method and the raw tables are published in full in our flyable days study, including every airport we compared.
Coming from Pasadena you are already on the right side of the hill. You are inland, east of the basin, and the June marine layer that sits over the Westside until lunchtime rarely reaches your street. But your lesson is not on your street. It is at an airport in the San Fernando Valley, and the valley does get the pattern.
| Airport | Flyable days, Aug 2025 – Aug 2026 |
|---|---|
| Burbank (KBUR) — Class C, built around airline operations | 356 |
| Van Nuys (KVNY) — where we train | 355 |
| Santa Monica (KSMO) | 343 |
| El Monte (KEMT) — nearest small field to Pasadena | 342 |
| Torrance (KTOA) | 332 |
Now the number that should shape your booking. In June, only 40% of 7am observations at Van Nuys met training minima. By 11am it was 93%. From 1pm onward it was 97 to 100%. So through late spring and early summer, book afternoons and stop treating a canceled dawn lesson as bad luck. From roughly September the mornings come back and a 7am slot is the smoothest air of the day.
One more figure from the same study, because it is the one that surprises people: in August at 7am, Van Nuys met minima 84% of the time. Coastal fields in the same month were far lower. Inland is not a small advantage in a Los Angeles summer.
Because Van Nuys sits west of you, everything about the training pushes away from the San Gabriels rather than into them. The practice area is over the west valley and the Santa Monica Mountains. Steep turns, stalls and ground reference work happen over the Sepulveda Basin and Lake Balboa, and within about six lessons you will be using both as reporting points without thinking about it.
Cross-countries run toward Camarillo and the coast. That is a better first cross-country in almost every way: low terrain, quiet enough airports to leave you room to make a mistake and fix it, and coastal air that smooths out in the afternoon.
Downtown Los Angeles sits off the left wing on a clear day and the Hollywood Sign is a standard visual reference coming back east. The first time you fly your own commute from three thousand feet, the geography of the basin makes a kind of sense the 134 never gives you.

The standard advice is two lessons a week. For a Pasadena student we usually recommend something different.
One long session holds two lessons plus ground work. Fly, come down, debrief, spend an hour on the ground covering the next topic, then fly again. More syllabus covered, and you drove the 134 once instead of twice.
Three hours is a lot for a brand new student, and the second flight is only worth paying for if you are still learning during it. Your instructor will say so honestly rather than sell you the hour.
Redbird MCX sessions are $189 and never cancel for weather. A Saturday when the valley is gray still moves your instrument scan, your radio work and your emergency procedures forward.
The logic is simple. The fixed costs of a lesson — the drive, the preflight, the twenty minutes it takes to get your head into it — get paid once instead of twice. Students who live twenty minutes from the field can afford to be inefficient about this. From Pasadena, you cannot, and the ones who do best here are the ones who front-load.
Ground school is the other lever. Ten hours of it is built into the Comprehensive program, three into Standard and Premium, and none of it requires an airplane or a weather window.
One school, one ramp, one price list. Nothing below is a starting-from figure and nothing moves after you enroll.
| Course | What it is | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery Flight For One | 60 minutes, you fly the aircraft, loggable dual instruction | $229 |
| Discovery Flight For Two | 60 minutes, one flies and one rides along | $299 |
| Discovery Flight, extended | 120 minutes for one, or the Luxury Cirrus flight for two | $599 |
| Multi-Engine Discovery Flight | 60 minutes in the Piper Seminole twin | $499 |
| Redbird MCX simulator session | Full-motion FAA-approved simulator, one hour | $189 |
| Teen aviation course, ages 10–15 | Structured introduction with real stick time | $4,200 |
| Solo Certificate | Train to your first solo flight | $5,500 |
| Sport Pilot Certificate | Lighter certificate, fewer hours, day VFR | $8,400 |
| Private Pilot — Standard | 40 hours logged, Cessna · Piper · Diamond | $10,900 |
| Private Pilot — Comprehensive | 60 hours logged, 10 hours ground, 5 hours simulator | $15,900 |
| Private Pilot — Premium | 40 hours logged in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, glass cockpit | $22,500 |
| Instrument Rating | Fly in cloud and in the system, on an IFR flight plan | $11,700 |
| Multi-Engine add-on | Piper Seminole, added to an existing certificate | $5,100 |
| Zero to airline | Private, instrument, commercial and the instructor ratings | $89,000 |
Enrolled students train at $179 an hour, wet, single-engine. That is the package rate and it is the only hourly number we publish. Financing starts at $2,500 down with monthly plans, through Stratus Financial or in house.
The commercial certificate sits inside the zero-to-airline path along with the instrument rating and the instructor ratings. If you are coming to us from Pasadena with an airline job as the goal rather than a hobby, that is the conversation to have at the consultation — the order you take the ratings in changes how much the whole thing costs.
A discovery flight is a real lesson. You fly the aircraft from the left seat, the instructor is legally pilot in command, and the time is loggable dual instruction that counts toward your certificate. The full price is credited against any program if you enroll within 24 hours, which means the $229 flight costs you nothing if you decide to carry on.
Not a broker’s rental, not a tired airframe with twelve thousand hours on it. Every airplane on this ramp is ours, inspected on our schedule, and flown by our instructors every day.

Single-engine training on the Standard and Comprehensive programs is flown in the Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft. The Premium program is flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo.
FAA-approved, fully enclosed, and it moves. Procedures, instrument scan, radio work and emergencies transfer straight to the aircraft — and it is never canceled for weather.
Simulator hours are built into every private pilot program — 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. Standalone sessions are $189.
Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and the instructor is legally pilot in command on every flight you make together until you solo. There are eleven of them. That number is the whole reason a Pasadena schedule survives contact with reality — you are not waiting on one person’s calendar to open up.
They fly here as a career rather than treating the school as a waiting room for a regional airline. The difference shows in the debrief, which is the part of a lesson that actually teaches you anything. Anyone can talk while you fly. Sitting down afterwards and telling you precisely why your last three landings were flat takes someone who intends to still be here next year.
You get matched to an instructor at the start, and you can change if the fit is wrong. Say so early. A mismatch you tolerate for politeness costs you money at $179 an hour.

On Google, the same three things come up again and again.
The most repeated compliment in our reviews is not the aircraft and it is not the price. It is the debrief.
Eleven instructors and a fleet we own means the lesson happens when we said it would. For anyone driving in from the San Gabriel Valley that is the entire ballgame.
The number you enroll at is the number you finish at. Reviewers mention this more than anything else about money.
All three finish at the same place: an FAA private pilot certificate. They differ in how many hours are bought up front and what you fly.
The efficient route if you can fly consistently and you are not chasing an airline career.
Sixty hours is closer to what most people actually need. Buying them up front is cheaper than buying them one at a time later.
The whole certificate flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Glass cockpit from lesson one, and the CAPS airframe parachute.
Financing from $2,500 down, monthly plans available. FAR 61.109 sets the 40-hour minimum for the certificate; the national average is 60 to 75 hours, which is why the Comprehensive program exists.
An hour in the air from Van Nuys, with you flying and an instructor beside you, answers the question faster than any amount of reading. Book a Saturday afternoon slot, take the 134 west, and be home by four.
The nearest full-service flight school to Pasadena is LA Flight School at Van Nuys Airport, about 30 to 40 minutes west via the 134 and the 101. We train pilots from Pasadena, Altadena, San Marino and South Pasadena, and we run every course from a $229 discovery flight through to the $89,000 zero-to-airline program.
Thirty minutes off peak and about forty in weekday traffic. Take the 134 west, the 170 north for roughly a mile, then the 101 south and exit at Balboa. The 134 corridor is one of the more predictable drives in Los Angeles outside rush hour, which is what makes booking a lesson at a fixed time realistic.
It is closer, and it is a fine airport. In our twelve-month weather study El Monte recorded 342 flyable days against 355 at Van Nuys, and Van Nuys is a Class D field under the LAX Class B shelf, so you get busy tower work from your first lesson. If drive time is the only factor, take the closer field. If finishing on schedule and being comfortable on the radio matter more, the extra fifteen minutes buys a lot.
Yes. The San Gabriels rise immediately north of Pasadena and they generate their own weather, including lee-side turbulence and strong afternoon thermal activity that does not appear in a basin forecast. Van Nuys sits in the middle of the San Fernando Valley with the practice area to the west and northwest, so early lessons happen away from the high terrain rather than underneath it.
Our three private pilot programs are $10,900 for the Standard, $15,900 for the Comprehensive and $22,500 for the Premium flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Standard and Premium include 40 hours of logged flight time, the Comprehensive includes 60. Financing starts at $2,500 down.
A discovery flight is a real lesson. You fly the aircraft from the left seat, an instructor is legally pilot in command, and the hour is loggable dual instruction that counts toward your certificate. It is $229 for 60 minutes, and the full price is credited against any program if you enroll within 24 hours.
Yes, and from Pasadena it often works better than weekday evenings. We are open 9am to 9pm seven days with eleven instructors, so weekend slots exist. The usual recommendation for someone driving the 134 is one three-hour Saturday block covering two flights plus ground work, rather than two separate short lessons in the week.
Fly longer and less often. A single three-hour block at Van Nuys holds two flight lessons plus an hour of ground work, which covers more syllabus than two one-hour visits and means you drive the freeway once. Most Pasadena students settle on one long weekend block plus one weekday session.
Afternoons. In June only 40% of 7am observations at Van Nuys met training minima, rising to 93% at 11am and 97 to 100% from 1pm. Pasadena itself rarely sees the marine layer because it is inland and east of the basin, but the airport is in the San Fernando Valley and does get the morning pattern.
All of them. The Instrument Rating is $11,700, the Multi-Engine add-on in the Piper Seminole is $5,100, and the commercial certificate sits inside our $89,000 zero-to-airline program along with the instructor ratings. Sport Pilot is $8,400 and the Solo Certificate is $5,500.
Yes. Our teen aviation course covers ages 10 to 15 and costs $4,200, with real stick time rather than a tour. You can solo an airplane at 16 and hold a private pilot certificate at 17, so starting at 14 or 15 puts a teenager in a strong position.
7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, Van Nuys, CA 91406, on Van Nuys Airport. Parking is on site and you walk out to the ramp from the office. Call (818) 290-8249 between 9am and 9pm any day of the week.
We have a Redbird MCX full-motion FAA-approved simulator. Standalone sessions are $189, and simulator hours are built into every private pilot program: 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. It never cancels for weather, which makes it useful on a gray June morning.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
