Best Flight Schools In California: What Actually Separates Them
Every school's website says it is the best. This page gives you the eight things that separate a good school from an expensive mistake, a scorecard to run on your shortlist, and the questions to ask on the phone before you pay anyone.

What The Best Flight Schools In California Have In Common
Tap A Criterion
Each tab explains what to ask and what a good answer looks like.
The Price You Can Actually Plan On
The FAA minimum for a Private Pilot certificate is 40 hours under Part 61, but the national reality is that most students log more. A school that quotes an hourly rate times 40 is quoting a number you will probably not pay.
A fixed package price moves the risk of extra hours onto the school. Ours start at $10,900 for the Standard Private Pilot Program and include aircraft, instructor, ground school, simulator time and books.

Who Owns The Airplanes
Ask who owns each aircraft and who maintains it. Schools that rely on privately owned leaseback airplanes lose them when owners sell or stop renting, and students feel it as cancellations.
We own our training fleet outright, and maintain it in our own shop on the field at Van Nuys.

Instructor Time, Not Just Instructor Count
A large instructor roster means little if each instructor carries too many students. Ask how often you will fly with the same person and what happens when they leave for an airline job.
We teach with eleven instructors from 9am to 9pm, seven days, so a regular weekly slot stays regular.

Where You Learn Changes What You Can Do
Learning at a towered airport in busy airspace takes a little longer at the start and pays off for the rest of your flying life. You will be at ease at any airport in the country.
Van Nuys is a Class D field with two parallel runways, a few minutes from Burbank's Class C and under the LAX Class B shelf.

Read Reviews Like An Investigator
Look for reviews that name the instructor, mention the certificate the student earned, and are spread over months and years rather than clustered in one week.
LA Flight School holds a 5.0 rating from over 120 Google reviews, and most of them name the instructor who taught them.

Why We Do Not Publish A Top-Ten List
Lists of the best flight schools in California are usually written by one of the schools on the list, or by a site paid per lead. Neither is a neutral source.
We would rather give you the criteria and let you score every school yourself, including us. If another school scores better for your goal, schedule and budget, that is the school you should choose.
What we can tell you is what we are: an FAA Part 61 school on the field at Van Nuys Airport, with a fixed price for every program, a fleet we own, a full-motion simulator and a 5.0 rating from more than 120 Google reviews.

Which Program Should You Compare Schools On?
The best school for a weekend private pilot is not the best school for an airline career. Three taps tell you which program to compare.
1. What do you want from flying?
2. How fast do you want to go?

Choosing A Flight School In California: Questions
What should I look for in the best flight school in California?
A written total price, school-owned aircraft, an on-site maintenance shop, enough instructors for the number of students, a schedule you can see before paying, an included simulator, a written pause and refund policy, and recent reviews that name instructors.
Is a Part 141 school better than a Part 61 school?
Not by itself. Part 141 schools follow an FAA-approved syllabus with lower minimum hours; Part 61 schools have more flexibility in scheduling. Both lead to the same FAA certificate and the same checkride.
Do the best flight schools cost more?
Not necessarily. The cheapest-looking hourly rate often becomes the most expensive certificate once extra hours are added. Compare total written prices, not hourly rates.
Can I visit LA Flight School before I enroll?
Yes. Book a free in-person consultation at Van Nuys Airport, or call (818) 290-8249. We are open 9am to 9pm, seven days.
