SAFETY FIRST
Very safety and detail oriented. Pre-flight briefing explained everything there was. To my knowledge, this flight school is exceptional in their ability.

We train pilots from Burbank at Van Nuys Airport, about 20 minutes away. Burbank has an airport of its own, and the honest first question is why that is not where you learn to fly. The answer, the drive, our own weather numbers and the price of every certificate are all below.

Twenty to twenty-five minutes off-peak, door to door. The quick version is the 170 to the 101 and off at Balboa. The slower but far more predictable version is Victory Blvd, straight across the valley floor, which costs you a handful of minutes and almost never surprises you. Most of our Burbank students end up using both depending on what the morning looks like.
People talk themselves out of flying over twenty minutes of freeway, so it is worth putting that twenty minutes in proportion. A lesson is a three-hour commitment. Preflight is twenty minutes if you do it properly, and you should do it properly. The flight itself is an hour, sometimes an hour and a half. The debrief runs another twenty to thirty minutes, and the debrief is the part that actually makes you better — it is where the hour you just flew turns into something you can repeat. Add the drive at both ends and the car is still under a quarter of your afternoon.
We are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A. You park at the building and walk out to the ramp. There is no terminal, no security line and no shuttle bus, which is the part that surprises people who have only ever arrived at an airport as a passenger. Your instructor meets you, you walk to the aircraft together, and you put your hands on it.
One scheduling note specific to living east of the field: if you book a 7am slot you are driving west before the valley wakes up, and you are off the ground while the air is still smooth. If you book mid-afternoon you are driving home into the worst of it. Neither is wrong. Just pick deliberately rather than by accident.

Hollywood Burbank (KBUR) is a Class C airline field. Commercial jets, published airline schedules, and an air traffic operation built around moving airliners on time. It is a good airport and it does its job well. It is simply not a general aviation training environment in the way Van Nuys is, and that is a difference of purpose rather than of quality.
Van Nuys is the valley’s general aviation field, and it is twenty minutes from you. That is where the training fleet sits, where the instructors work, where the maintenance happens and where the whole apparatus of a flight school lives — the classrooms, the simulator, the dispatch desk, the aircraft you will fly next Tuesday. None of that is a coincidence. It is on that field because that field is set up for it.
KVNY is a Class D field underneath the LAX Class B shelf, and by movement count it is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world. Two parallel runways, a control tower, and traffic that never really stops. For a student that is not a drawback. It is the curriculum.

Nearest is not the same as best set up to teach you. Here is what twenty extra minutes of driving actually gets you.
You talk on the radio from the first lesson. Not in month three, not after solo — from the first time you release the brakes. Ground before you move, tower before you cross a hold-short line, and SoCal Approach on anything that leaves the pattern. Students who learn at quiet uncontrolled fields often reach their checkride having barely used a radio, then spend their first year avoiding towered airports because the microphone frightens them. That does not happen here.
There is a specific bonus for a Burbank student that is easy to overlook. Burbank is close enough that its traffic is constantly in your ears — the arrivals, the departures, the cadence of a Class C field working airline movements. Most student pilots in this country never hear that until long after their checkride. You get it as background from lesson one, and by the time you actually need to talk to a Class C controller yourself it has stopped being intimidating. Your home airport is, in a real sense, part of your training even though you are not flying out of it.
Now the honest trade-off, because a page that only lists advantages is a sales brochure. Van Nuys is busy. There are mornings you sit holding short of 16R for five minutes while a jet departs and two aircraft land ahead of you, and at a quiet field you would already be airborne and doing something useful. That is real, and it costs you Hobbs time occasionally. What you buy with it is a twenty-hour student who handles a busy Class D without thinking about it, and a first solo cross-country that is not the emotional event it becomes for somebody trained at a sleepy strip.
The geography works in your favor too. The Verdugo Mountains sit right behind Burbank and the Hollywood Hills close off the valley to the south, and those two features become the visual anchors you will use for the rest of your flying life around Los Angeles. Coming back from the northwest on a hazy afternoon, you will find the Verdugos first and the field second. Students from further out have to learn that geography. You already live in it.
We measured it rather than guessing. Twelve months of NOAA ASOS observations from 1 August 2025 to 1 August 2026, scored against a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility — the minima most schools apply to student solo and early dual instruction. Van Nuys came out at 355 flyable days. Burbank came out at 356. One day apart across a full year is the same airport with a different name on the chart.
So the weather argument does not settle anything for you, and we are not going to pretend it does. What settles it is that the fleet, the instructors and the flight school are on the Van Nuys field and not on yours.
The number that does move is the hour of the day. In June, only 40% of 7am observations at Van Nuys met training minima. By 1pm it was 97 to 100%. If you are learning through June, book afternoons and stop fighting the marine layer. By August the 7am figure had recovered to 84%, which is why summer mornings are usually fine and June mornings usually are not.
Living where you live, you are already on the right side of the hill. Burbank and Van Nuys are both inland valley fields, and the low cloud that parks over the coast — Santa Monica managed 343 days and Torrance 332 in the same study — mostly does not reach either of you. The full method and the raw tables are published in our flyable days study.

One page, every certificate, no quote form in the way. These are package prices, not estimates.
Almost everyone starts the same way. A discovery flight is $229 for sixty minutes and it is a real lesson, not a sightseeing ride — you fly the aircraft from the left seat with an instructor beside you, and the time is loggable dual instruction that counts toward your certificate. If you enroll within 24 hours, the full price comes off your program. That is the cheapest honest way to find out whether you actually like this.
From there the ladder is straightforward. Sport Pilot at $8,400 is the shortest route to flying legally on your own, with real limits on what and where you can fly. The Private Pilot certificate is the one most people want and the one worth building around; FAR 61.109 sets the legal minimum at 40 hours and the national average sits closer to 60 to 75, which is exactly why we sell a 40-hour package and a 60-hour package rather than pretending everyone finishes at the minimum. Instrument follows at $11,700. Commercial and the full zero-to-airline track are there for people who want this as a job, multi-engine is a $5,100 add-on flown in the Piper Seminole, and teenagers aged 10 to 15 have their own course at $4,200. Enrolled students train on package pricing at $179 an hour, wet, single-engine.

The private pilot certificate is a license to learn. These are the six things people add to it.
The rating that makes the marine layer somebody else’s problem. You learn to fly on instruments alone and to operate inside the IFR system, which around Los Angeles means you stop canceling for a 1,200 ft overcast that burns off by ten.
Flown in the Piper Seminole. Short, intense, and the point where engine-out work stops being theoretical. Required if you are heading for a professional cockpit, and a genuinely enjoyable rating even if you are not.
The zero-to-airline program takes somebody with no license and no hours through every rating to an airline-ready CV. It is the most expensive thing on this page and the only one that is a career decision rather than a hobby.
Fewer hours, lower cost, real restrictions on aircraft, passengers and airspace. Good if you want to fly locally in daylight and never plan to carry three people to Mammoth. Read it honestly before you pick it.
A structured course for younger students, built so that the flying is genuinely instructional rather than a joyride. You can solo at 16 and hold a private certificate at 17, so starting at 14 is not early.
Full-motion and FAA-approved. Useful for procedures, instrument scan and emergencies, and the only lesson on this list that is never canceled for weather. Hours are already built into the private pilot programs.
Not a broker’s rental and not a tired airframe with twelve thousand hours on it that somebody else maintains when they get around to it. Every one of these sits on our ramp at Van Nuys and flies most days.

Standard and Comprehensive private pilot training is flown in the Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft. The Premium program is flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo.
A full-motion, fully enclosed, FAA-approved simulator sitting in the building on Balboa. It is not a desktop game with a yoke bolted to it. Procedures, instrument scan, radio phraseology and engine failures all transfer straight to the aircraft, and none of it gets canceled for a ceiling.
Simulator hours are built into every private pilot program: 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. A standalone session is $189.
Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight you fly together. That is not a formality. It means the person in the right seat carries the responsibility while you learn to carry it.
There are eleven of them, which is the number that matters more than any of the others on this page. A one-instructor school is a lovely thing right up until that instructor takes a week off, and then your training stops. With eleven, a Tuesday slot stays a Tuesday slot.
We match you to an instructor and you can change if the fit is wrong. Say so early. The single most common cause of a stalled private pilot certificate is a student who quietly does not click with their instructor, keeps booking anyway, and drifts away after thirty hours. It is a five-minute conversation and it fixes the whole thing.

On Google the same three things come up again and again, and none of them is the one we would have predicted.
The most repeated compliment is not the fleet and not the price. It is the debrief, and the fact that somebody sat down and explained what happened rather than shaking your hand at the aircraft.
Eleven instructors and a fleet we own means the lesson happens on the day it was booked. Reviewers who trained somewhere else first tend to be the ones who mention this hardest.
The number you enroll at is the number you finish at. No mid-program repricing, no surprise line items. This comes up constantly and it is the easiest promise on the page to keep.
FAR 61.109 sets the legal minimum at 40 hours. The national average is closer to 60 to 75. That gap is the entire reason there are three of these rather than one.
The efficient route if you can fly consistently and study hard between lessons.
Built around what people actually take rather than the legal minimum. Most students finish inside it.
The whole certificate flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, glass cockpit and CAPS parachute from day one.
Financing from $2,500 down with monthly payment plans. Enrolled students train at the $179 an hour package rate, wet, single-engine.
Book the discovery flight before you book anything else. You fly the aircraft, the hour is loggable dual instruction, and if you enroll within 24 hours the whole $229 comes off your program. If you would rather talk numbers first, the consultation is free and there is no aircraft involved.
Drive times, prices, weather and what a discovery flight really is. Every answer has a number in it.
The nearest full flight training operation to Burbank is at Van Nuys Airport, about 20 to 25 minutes away via the 170 to the 101 or across the valley on Victory Blvd. Hollywood Burbank (KBUR) is a Class C airline field rather than a general aviation training environment, so the training fleet, the instructors and the simulator are all at Van Nuys. Discovery flights start at $229.
Twenty to twenty-five minutes off-peak. The fast route is the 170 to the 101 and off at Balboa; Victory Blvd straight across the valley floor takes a few minutes longer and is more predictable. We are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, with parking at the building and no terminal to walk through.
KBUR is a Class C field built around commercial airline traffic and published jet schedules. Van Nuys is the San Fernando Valley general aviation field, and that is where the training fleet, the eleven instructors, the maintenance and the Redbird simulator are based. It is 20 minutes from Burbank, which for a three-hour lesson block is a small share of your day.
Our Standard private pilot program is $10,900 for 40 hours logged, Comprehensive is $15,900 for 60 hours logged, and Premium is $22,500 flown entirely in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Financing starts at $2,500 down. FAR 61.109 sets the 40-hour legal minimum but the national average is closer to 60 to 75 hours, which is why most students choose the Comprehensive program.
A discovery flight is $229 for 60 minutes and it is a real lesson. You fly the aircraft from the left seat with a certificated instructor beside you, and the time is loggable dual instruction that counts toward your certificate. If you enroll in a program within 24 hours, the full $229 is credited against it.
355 flyable days at Van Nuys in the twelve months to August 2026, measured against a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles visibility using NOAA ASOS data. Burbank recorded 356 over the same period, so the two fields are statistically identical. Coastal fields are meaningfully worse: Santa Monica 343 and Torrance 332.
In June, only 40% of 7am observations at Van Nuys met training minima, rising to 97 to 100% from 1pm. Book afternoons through June. By August the 7am figure was back to 84%, so early summer mornings are fine again. Outside the marine layer season, early mornings are the smoothest air of the day.
Most students who fly two to three times a week finish in four to six months. FAR 61.109 requires 40 hours minimum and the national average is 60 to 75, so consistency matters more than talent. Flying once a fortnight is the most expensive way to learn, because every lesson starts with re-teaching the last one.
Yes, all of them at Van Nuys. Instrument Rating is $11,700, the Multi-Engine add-on in the Piper Seminole is $5,100, and the zero-to-airline program that takes someone with no license through to airline-ready is $89,000. Sport Pilot is $8,400 and the Solo Certificate course is $5,500.
There is no minimum age to start lessons. You can solo an airplane at 16 and hold a private pilot certificate at 17. We run a dedicated teen aviation course for ages 10 to 15 at $4,200, structured so the flying is genuinely instructional rather than a sightseeing ride.
Yes. The teen aviation course for ages 10 to 15 costs $4,200 and runs out of Van Nuys Airport, 20 minutes from Burbank. Older teenagers go straight into the standard private pilot programs, which start at $10,900, and can legally solo at 16.
It is busy, and some mornings you will hold short for a few minutes while jets depart. That is the trade-off, and the payoff is that you use the radio from your first lesson and handle a towered Class D field under the LAX Class B shelf as routine. Students trained at quiet fields often avoid towered airports for a year after their checkride.
Yes. A standalone session in the Redbird MCX full-motion, FAA-approved simulator is $189. Simulator hours are already included in every private pilot program: 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. It is the only lesson that never gets canceled for weather.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
