The Multi-Engine Instructor Rating (MEI)

An MEI is a flight instructor certificate with a multiengine airplane rating. It is an additional flight instructor rating under 14 CFR 61.191, so you skip the fundamentals-of-instructing knowledge test — but 14 CFR 61.183(j) still wants 15 hours of pilot-in-command time in a multiengine airplane, and the multi-engine rating itself will not give you those.

The short answer

What is an MEI?

A multi-engine instructor rating is a flight instructor certificate carrying an airplane multiengine rating, which lets you give flight training toward certificates and ratings in twins. If you already hold a flight instructor certificate, it is an additional rating under 14 CFR 61.191 — you meet the 61.183 eligibility requirements that apply to the rating you want, and 61.191(b) excuses you from the fundamentals-of-instructing knowledge test.

It is the rating that turns a multi-engine ticket from a line in a logbook into an income. Twin instruction is specialised, comparatively few instructors hold it, and a school that owns a twin needs somebody who can teach in it. That is the practical argument.

The honest counterweight is that the MEI is also the rating that most often gets bought too early. It sits behind a commercial certificate with a multiengine class rating, an instrument rating, a flight instructor certificate and 15 hours of pilot-in-command time in a twin. Buying the MEI before you have the pieces in front of it is a common and expensive mistake.

Prerequisites

What 14 CFR 61.183 and 61.191 actually require

Read these in order. Most of the cost of an MEI is in the rows above the last one.

RequirementRuleDetail
Age 1861.183(a)Straightforward.
English language proficiency61.183(b)Read, speak, write and understand English.
Commercial or ATP certificate with the appropriate category and class61.183(c)For an MEI that means commercial or ATP with an airplane multiengine land rating, plus an instrument rating.

15 hours pilot in command in a multiengine airplane61.183(j)Pilot-in-command time in the category and class appropriate to the rating sought. This is the row people miss.
Additional rating relief61.191(a)–(b)An applicant for an additional flight instructor rating meets the 61.183 requirements that apply to the rating sought, and does not repeat the fundamentals-of-instructing knowledge test.

The spin training endorsement in 61.183(i) is written for a flight instructor certificate with an airplane or glider rating, and it is satisfied by the endorsement you already hold from your initial airplane instructor certificate. A Seminole is not certificated for spins and nobody will be asking you to spin one.

The 15 hours

Where do 15 hours of multi-engine pilot-in-command time come from?

This is the question that decides whether the MEI is realistic for you, and it deserves a direct answer: not from the multi-engine rating itself. During the add-on, the instructor is legally pilot in command. Your logbook fills with dual received, not with pilot-in-command time.

14 CFR 61.183(j) requires 15 hours as pilot in command in the category and class appropriate to the rating sought. For an MEI that is 15 hours of PIC in a multiengine airplane, and after a ten-to-fifteen hour add-on you will typically hold very few of them.

There are three honest routes. Fly the twin yourself once you hold the rating, which is the cleanest and the most expensive. Log pilot-in-command time in a twin while performing the duties of pilot in command in structured training, where the rules allow it. Or find an operator, an owner or a partnership where twin time is available for a reason other than time-building.

We will not pretend there is a shortcut, and we will not sell you an MEI course before you have the hours. What we will do, at the consultation, is look at your logbook and say plainly how far off you are. That is a more useful conversation than a price list.

What the rating teaches

Teaching from the right seat of a twin

The MEI practical test is a teaching test. You fly the manoeuvres and you explain them at the same time, from the seat you have probably never flown a twin from.

1

The right seat itself

Different sight picture, throttle quadrant with the wrong hand, and a left hand that now has to fly. Most MEI candidates spend the first hours simply relearning landings.

2

Teaching VMC

Explaining the 14 CFR 1.2 definition and the 14 CFR 23.2135(c) description, the certification conditions, and every variable that moves the number, while flying the demonstration above 3,000 feet AGL.

3

Failing an engine safely

The core instructor skill and the one with an accident history behind it. Zero thrust rather than a shutdown at low altitude, VSSE respected, and the recovery briefed before every single failure.

4

Recognising a student about to do something dangerous

In a twin the window between a mishandled failure and a loss of control is short. Knowing when to take the aeroplane is a teachable skill and it is examined.

5

Lesson plans that survive contact

You will be asked to teach a subject cold. The examiner is not testing whether you know VMC; they are testing whether somebody who does not know it would after you finished.

6

14 CFR 61.195(f)

Once rated, you still may not give training toward a certificate or rating in a multiengine airplane without five hours of pilot-in-command time in that specific make and model. Not the class. The model.

The fleet

The aeroplanes an MEI candidate meets

One twin and a single-engine fleet that most instructor candidates already know intimately.

Counter-rotating propellers, which is why this aeroplane has no critical engine

Retractable gear, constant-speed props — a complex airplane under 14 CFR 61.31(e)

Piper Warrior four-seat training aircraft at Van Nuys Airport

Piper Arrow II — complex single, where most pilots meet a constant-speed prop first

Diamond DA20 — two seats and a very honest feel

The multi-engine add-on is $5,100 and is flown entirely in the Seminole, which carries no hourly figure. Single-engine trainers run at $179 an hour wet for enrolled students.

Redbird MCX

Where teaching practice costs nothing

The Redbird MCX is full-motion and FAA-approved, and it will let a candidate practise failing an engine on somebody without any of the consequences.

MEI candidates use the simulator to rehearse briefings and to build the habit of narrating while flying. Standalone sessions are $189.

Your instructor

Who teaches the MEI here

Instructors who hold the rating and use it weekly, which is a smaller group than most schools admit. Twin instruction is not a rating you keep sharp by holding it — it is one you keep sharp by teaching in a twin, and we have one on the ramp being flown.

Every instructor here holds a commercial or airline transport certificate plus a flight instructor certificate and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight. 14 CFR 61.195(f) requires five hours of pilot-in-command time in the specific make and model of multiengine airplane before giving training in it, and we apply that to ourselves before we teach anybody else about it.

We make no claims about employment or job placement, and we never will. What we will tell you is what the rating costs, how long it takes and what the market for twin instruction at a Los Angeles field actually looks like, honestly, at a free consultation.

What people say

5.0 ★ · 85 Google reviews

Instructor candidates tend to write about the ground time, which is the right thing to be writing about on this rating.

The debrief, not the flight

The compliment that comes up most often in our reviews is not the aeroplane and it is not the ramp. It is that somebody sat down afterwards and drew the yaw on a whiteboard until it made sense.

Lessons that actually happen

Eleven instructors and a fleet we own and maintain. On a rating you are trying to finish inside two weeks, a school that cancels twice is the difference between done and half-done.

The number does not move

What you enrol at is what you finish at. On a $5,100 add-on that promise is most of the point, and reviewers keep writing about it because it is not universal.

Programmes and prices

Getting to the MEI

The multi-engine add-on comes first at $5,100. MEI training is quoted individually once we have seen your logbook, because the answer depends entirely on how many of the 61.183(j) hours you already hold.

The rating

Multi-Engine Add-On

$5,100 / complete

The whole rating: Seminole time, dual instruction, ground and systems work, engine-out training and checkride preparation, at a price that is fixed when you enrol.

Multi-Engine Discovery Flight

$499 / 60 min

An hour in the Seminole before you commit $5,100 to it. Book it on the product page — an hour in the left seat settles the question faster than any amount of reading.

Discovery Flight For One

$229 / 60 min

A real lesson in a single. You fly the aeroplane, the time is loggable dual instruction, and the full $229 is credited against any programme if you enrol within 24 hours.

Redbird MCX Session

$189 / session

Full-motion, FAA-approved and never cancelled for weather. Engine failures cost nothing here, which is why the first dozen of yours happen on the ground.

FAQ

Multi-Engine Instructor Questions

A flight instructor certificate with an airplane multiengine rating, which allows you to give flight training toward certificates and ratings in twins. If you already hold a flight instructor certificate it is an additional rating under 14 CFR 61.191, and 61.191(b) excuses you from repeating the fundamentals-of-instructing knowledge test.

14 CFR 61.183(j) requires at least 15 hours as pilot in command in the category and class appropriate to the rating sought — for an MEI, 15 hours of pilot-in-command time in a multiengine airplane. The multi-engine add-on itself will not supply those hours, because during training the instructor is pilot in command.

A commercial or airline transport pilot certificate with an airplane multiengine land rating, an instrument rating, and normally an existing flight instructor certificate. Those come from 14 CFR 61.183(c) and, for the additional-rating route, 61.191(a).

No, if you already hold a flight instructor certificate. 14 CFR 61.191(b) states that an applicant for an additional flight instructor rating is not required to pass the knowledge test on the areas listed in 61.185(a)(1). You do take the flight instructor knowledge test appropriate to the rating sought.

The spin training endorsement in 14 CFR 61.183(i) is written for a flight instructor certificate with an airplane or glider rating, and it is satisfied by the endorsement from your initial airplane instructor certificate. Light twins such as the Seminole are not certificated for spins, so the training is not done in one.

Not immediately. 14 CFR 61.195(f) prohibits a flight instructor from giving training required for a certificate or rating in a multiengine airplane unless the instructor has at least five hours of pilot-in-command time in that specific make and model. Moving from a Seminole to a Baron means five hours in the Baron first.

Yes. You fly and teach simultaneously from the right seat, which is a seat most candidates have never flown a twin from. Expect the first hours of training to go on landings and on getting comfortable with the throttle quadrant in the other hand.

We quote it individually after seeing your logbook, because the cost is dominated by how many of the 15 hours required by 14 CFR 61.183(j) you already hold. The multi-engine add-on that comes first is $5,100 and is a fixed number.

If you intend to instruct professionally and want to be employable at a school that owns a twin, it is a genuinely differentiating rating because comparatively few instructors hold it. If you do not intend to instruct, it does nothing for you. We make no claims about employment outcomes.

Private, instrument, commercial single-engine, flight instructor, multi-engine add-on, then the pilot-in-command time, then the MEI. Putting the commercial certificate in a single and adding the multi-engine class under 14 CFR 61.63(c) avoids the multiengine hour requirements of 14 CFR 61.129(b).

Van Nuys Airport (KVNY), in our Piper Seminole, with the air work northwest of the field over the Simi Hills. We are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, Van Nuys, CA 91406, open 9am to 9pm, seven days. Call (818) 290-8249.

We will tell you honestly where they can come from and we will not pretend there is a shortcut. Twin time is expensive time, and the sensible plan is usually to hold the rating, keep it current and take the hours as they become available rather than buying all 15 in a block.
