SAFETY FIRST
Very safety and detail oriented. Pre-flight briefing explained everything there was. To my knowledge, this flight school is exceptional in their ability.

Torrance has one of the better general aviation fields in the South Bay and it sits under the same LAX Class B shelf we do. It also sits closer to the water, and we measured what that costs: 332 flyable days a year at Zamperini Field against 355 at Van Nuys.
Torrance to Van Nuys is the 405 north the whole way, about thirty miles, ending with the Sepulveda Pass. At nine on a Sunday it is around forty minutes. In the weekday evening peak it is well over an hour, and that stretch of the 405 has a national reputation it has earned.
So plan against it rather than through it. Northbound is worst in the evening; southbound is worst in the morning. A late-morning or early-afternoon lesson is against the flow both ways, and a 7.30pm slot puts your drive home after the worst of it. We are open until 9pm, seven days.
There is no clever alternative route. Sepulveda Boulevard parallels the freeway for part of it and helps when the 405 stops, and the 110 to the 101 is longer in miles and usually longer in minutes. If you are coming from Torrance, the honest planning assumption is an hour each way and anything less is a bonus.
We are at 7900 Balboa Boulevard, Suite 108A, on the west side of Van Nuys Airport, with parking on site.

KTOA is Class D with its own control tower and parallel runways, and it is named for Louis Zamperini, the Torrance boy who ran the 5,000 metres at the 1936 Olympics and then went to war as a bombardier. It is a well-run field in a good position, and pilots who learn there come away comfortable with tower work and with the coastline.
The problem is not the airport. It is the ocean two miles away. Torrance measured 332 flyable days a year in our twelve-month study against 355 at Van Nuys, using a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility. That is 23 days, and they are not spread evenly — they land almost entirely on summer mornings, which is when most people with jobs want to fly.
The Palos Verdes peninsula rising immediately south-west adds the other coastal ingredient. Terrain that close to the shoreline shapes the wind, and the marine layer that stacks against it does not clear on the schedule an inland field does. A Torrance student learns coastal weather properly, which is genuinely valuable, and pays for the education in cancelled Saturdays.
Van Nuys is eleven miles further inland than Santa Monica and further still from Torrance, which is why the numbers differ. Add two parallel runways with the primary one long enough for business jets, a fleet we own rather than broker, a full-motion Redbird MCX for the mornings the sky does not cooperate, and a 9am to 9pm operation seven days a week.
Torrance and Van Nuys are both Class D fields underneath the Los Angeles Class B shelf, and both sit inside the 30-nautical-mile Mode C veil around LAX. The transponder and ADS-B requirements of 14 CFR 91.215 and 91.225 apply at both from the first lesson.
The difference is what is immediately next door. Torrance sits close under the approach and departure flow of one of the busiest airports in the world, with Hawthorne and Long Beach nearby and the shoreline right there. It is precise flying in a confined space, and a student who learns it holds altitude better than most.
Van Nuys gives you a valley instead of a shoreline: Burbank Class C roughly six miles east, Whiteman Class D a few miles north-east, mountains closing the box to the south and north-west, and a tower sequencing light trainers between business jets and helicopters all day. Different discipline, same Bravo overhead. Both are better preparation than a quiet uncontrolled strip, and we would say that even if you never came here.
The entry rules, equipment requirements and cloud clearances for every class are laid out in airspace classes explained.
Twelve months of NOAA ASOS observations, 1 August 2025 to 1 August 2026, at a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility — the threshold most schools apply to student solo and early dual.
| Airport | Flyable days per year |
|---|---|
| Burbank (KBUR) | 356 |
| Van Nuys (KVNY) | 355 |
| Santa Monica (KSMO) | 343 |
| Whiteman (KWHP) | 334 |
| Torrance (KTOA) | 332 |
Twenty-three days sounds small until you notice when they fall. Southern California schools rarely lose a whole day to weather. They lose mornings, and coastal fields lose more of them and lose them later.
In June at Van Nuys only 40% of 7am observations met training minima, rising to 93% by 11am and 97 to 100% from 1pm. In August at 7am, Van Nuys read 84% while Santa Monica — also coastal, and no closer to the water than Torrance — read 48%. If your training window is Saturday at eight in June, the inland field is not a marginal improvement. It is the difference between flying and not.
The honest counterweight: if you fly weekday afternoons, that gap mostly disappears and the drive becomes hard to justify. Work out which kind of student you are before you decide, not after. Method and raw tables for all fifteen airports are in the flyable days study.
The Palos Verdes peninsula rising immediately south-west, the refineries and the port cranes at San Pedro, the Vincent Thomas Bridge, and the Goodyear airship base next door in Carson. Catalina sits offshore to the south-west and is a genuine over-water cross-country rather than a sightseeing detour.
You climb over the Sepulveda Basin and pick a direction. Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood sign and the downtown towers are ten minutes south-east; Point Dume and the Malibu coast are fifteen minutes west across the Santa Monica Mountains.
Camarillo, Santa Barbara, Big Bear and Catalina all sit inside a training flight from Van Nuys. Big Bear puts a mountain airport at 6,752 feet an hour from the ramp, which is the fastest way to make density altitude stop being a chart and start being a landing.
Not a broker’s rental and not one aeroplane shared by forty students. Every airframe here belongs to us, is inspected on our schedule and is flown by our instructors every day.

Single-engine training on the Standard and Comprehensive programmes is flown in the Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft. The Premium programme is flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Every aircraft is ours, and 14 CFR 91.409(b) puts each of them on a 100-hour inspection cycle because they are used for instruction for hire.
A full-motion Redbird MCX has no ceiling and no marine layer. Procedures, instrument scan, radio work and emergencies all transfer straight to the aircraft.
Simulator hours are built into every private pilot programme — 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. A standalone session is $189. It is also the only booking on this page that a coastal morning cannot take away from you.
Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight you fly with them. That is the regulation, not a sales point.
The reason it matters to someone driving up the 405 is redundancy. Eleven instructors and a fleet we own means a booked slot gets flown, and if your aircraft goes unserviceable there is another on the ramp. An hour of freeway for a cancelled lesson is the worst outcome in flight training and we design against it.
You are matched to an instructor at the start and you can change if the fit is wrong. Say so early, and nobody will take it personally.

Seventy reviews on Google, all of them five stars. The same three things come up.
The line that comes up most in our Google reviews is about the debrief at the table afterwards, not the aeroplane. Twenty minutes with a whiteboard is where a lesson actually sticks.
Eleven instructors and a fleet we own means a booked Saturday stays a booked Saturday. Reviewers mention scheduling more often than they mention price.
You enrol at $10,900 or $15,900 and you finish at $10,900 or $15,900. Nobody writes a five-star review about a surprise invoice.
All 70 reviews are on Google. We do not aggregate a rating from anywhere else and we do not publish a figure we cannot point at.
Every option has two doors. Book it outright, or book a free consultation and ask whether the drive makes sense for the way you actually plan to train.
A real lesson with your hands on the controls. The hour is loggable dual instruction, not a sightseeing ride.
40 logged hours in the Cessna, Piper or Diamond. The legal minimum route, and the cheapest way in.
60 logged hours, which is where the national average actually lands. The realistic option for most people.
The certificate flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, with glass avionics and the CAPS whole-airframe parachute.
The rating that makes a certificate useful on a marine-layer morning anywhere in this basin.
The shortest legal route to acting as pilot in command. Fewer privileges, fewer hours, less money.
Multi-engine add-on $5,100 · Solo Certificate $5,500 · Teens aged 10–15 $4,200 · zero to airline $89,000. Financing from $2,500 down. Every option above has two doors: book it now, or book a free consultation and ask the awkward questions first.
A discovery flight is a real lesson: you fly the aircraft from the left seat, the hour is loggable dual instruction, and the full $229 comes off any programme if you enrol within 24 hours. If the drive turns out not to suit you, you have still logged an hour of dual and committed to nothing.
Rather write it down first? Use the contact form, or read what a discovery flight actually involves before you decide anything.
Torrance’s field is Zamperini Field (KTOA), a Class D airport with its own tower and parallel runways, and there are flight schools operating from it. We train at Van Nuys Airport, about thirty miles north on the 405 — roughly forty minutes off-peak and over an hour in the evening peak. We are open 9am to 9pm, seven days.
We measured 332 at Torrance against 355 at Van Nuys over the twelve months to 1 August 2026, using a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility. The 23-day gap falls almost entirely on summer mornings, because Zamperini Field sits about two miles from the water and Van Nuys does not.
About thirty miles, all of it the 405 north, finishing through the Sepulveda Pass. Forty minutes on a quiet Sunday and well over an hour in a weekday evening peak. There is no faster alternative route, so plan for an hour each way and treat anything less as a bonus.
Class D with a control tower, sitting under the Los Angeles Class B shelf and inside the 30-nautical-mile Mode C veil around LAX, close to the LAX arrival and departure flow. The transponder and ADS-B requirements of 14 CFR 91.215 and 91.225 apply from your first lesson. Van Nuys is also Class D under the same Bravo shelf, with Burbank Class C about six miles east.
It is named for Louis Zamperini, who grew up in Torrance, ran the 5,000 metres at the 1936 Olympic Games and later served as a bombardier in the Second World War. The name is on the field, and most local pilots use it in preference to the airport identifier.
Our published programmes are $10,900 for the Standard private pilot course with 40 logged hours, $15,900 for the Comprehensive course with 60 logged hours, and $22,500 for the Premium course flown in a Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Aircraft time inside a programme is $179 an hour, wet, single-engine. Financing starts at $2,500 down.
It depends when you fly. If your only slots are summer weekend mornings, the inland field is 23 measured days a year better and the drive buys you lessons you would otherwise lose. If you fly weekday afternoons the weather gap mostly closes, and the nearer field is the sensible choice.
It delays it rather than stopping it. In June at Van Nuys only 40% of 7am observations met training minima, rising to 93% by 11am and 97 to 100% from 1pm, and coastal fields clear later still. Booking afternoons from May through July is the single most effective scheduling decision a South Bay student can make.
Yes. A discovery flight for one is $229 for 60 minutes, you fly the aircraft from the left seat, and the hour is logged as dual instruction. If you enrol within 24 hours the full $229 comes off the programme price. Longer 90 and 120 minute versions of the same flight are available.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
