SAFETY FIRST
Very safety and detail oriented. Pre-flight briefing explained everything there was. To my knowledge, this flight school is exceptional in their ability.

El Monte has its own tower-controlled field with the San Gabriel Mountains standing over it, and plenty of people learn to fly there. This page is about the other option: thirty miles west, a Class D field under the LAX Class B shelf, a fleet we own, and a simulator that never gets cancelled.
From El Monte the sane route is the 605 north to the 210 west, through Pasadena and Glendale, then the 134 and the 101 north-west to Balboa Boulevard. Thirty miles. On a Sunday at nine that is about forty minutes.
At five on a weekday it is not forty minutes and we are not going to pretend it is. The 134 through Glendale and Burbank is the bottleneck and it stays a bottleneck until roughly seven. Which is exactly why we are open until 9pm, seven days: a 7pm lesson from the San Gabriel Valley is a genuinely easier drive than a 5pm one, and the air over the valley after the heat of the day has gone out of it is smoother too.
The 10 west to the 405 north exists. It is longer in time almost every hour of the day and it puts you in the Sepulveda Pass at the wrong moment. Take the 210.
We are at 7900 Balboa Boulevard, Suite 108A, on the west side of Van Nuys Airport, with parking on site.

El Monte’s field, KEMT, now carries the name San Gabriel Valley Airport. It is Class D with its own control tower and a single runway aligned roughly north and south, and it is one of the shorter tower-controlled strips in the basin. That is not a criticism. A short runway with a tower on it is an excellent place to learn precise approach speeds, because sloppiness has somewhere obvious to show up.
What sits north of the field matters more than the field. The San Gabriel Mountains rise straight off the valley floor a few miles away and keep going to 10,064 feet at Mount San Antonio, the peak everyone here calls Baldy. On a hot afternoon with a north wind, the air coming off that wall is not smooth, and a student based at El Monte meets mechanical turbulence and mountain lee effects far earlier than a student based somewhere flat. During a Santa Ana event the same terrain funnels wind through the passes at speeds that cancel training everywhere in the basin.
Van Nuys is a bigger box with different homework. Two parallel runways, the primary one long enough that business jets use it all day, and a tower that sequences light trainers into that flow. Add a fleet we own and maintain rather than broker, a Redbird MCX full-motion simulator, and a 9am to 9pm operation seven days a week. The honest trade is thirty miles of freeway for a busier environment and more aircraft to choose from.
If your only goal is a private certificate and you can walk to a local ramp in ten minutes, walk to the local ramp. Consistency beats everything in flight training, and the school you actually get to is better than the school you meant to get to.
Fly out of El Monte on a Saturday and you are sharing a small volume of air with a lot of other people. Brackett Field at La Verne and Chino are both Class D and both busy. Ontario carries Class C airspace further east. Burbank’s Class C sits north-west of you, and Van Nuys, Whiteman and El Monte itself are all Class D within the same short hop.
That density is why San Gabriel Valley students tend to be good on the radio early and good at seeing traffic early. It is also why the transponder and ADS-B rules of 14 CFR 91.215 and 91.225 stop being an abstraction the first week. Nobody in this basin learns those from a book.
What Van Nuys adds on top is the Class B shelf. We sit directly under the Los Angeles Class B, so a student here learns to work a shelf, request a transition and keep an altitude honest as normal practice rather than as a special exercise before a checkride. Bravo airspace stops being intimidating at about the fourth time you are inside it with an instructor talking you through the clearance.
The entry requirements, equipment and cloud clearances for every class are set out in airspace classes explained, with the regulation numbers attached.
Twelve months of NOAA ASOS observations, 1 August 2025 to 1 August 2026, at a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility. Fifteen airports were in the study and El Monte was not one of them, so we are not going to publish a figure for it.
| Airport | Flyable days per year |
|---|---|
| Burbank (KBUR) | 356 |
| Van Nuys (KVNY) | 355 |
| Santa Monica (KSMO) | 343 |
| Whiteman (KWHP) | 334 |
| Torrance (KTOA) | 332 |
What the study does show is the pattern that governs the whole basin, and it applies inland as much as on the coast. California flight schools lose very few whole days to weather. They lose mornings.
In June at Van Nuys only 40% of 7am observations met training minima. By 11am that is 93%, and from 1pm it runs 97 to 100%. Inland fields like El Monte generally clear earlier than coastal ones because the marine layer thins as it pushes east, but the shape of the curve is the same everywhere: book afternoons from May through July and stop treating a scrubbed dawn lesson as bad luck.
Method and raw tables are in the flyable days study, along with the eight other airports we counted.
Whittier Narrows and the San Gabriel River sit immediately south-west of the runway, which makes them the first ground reference most El Monte students learn. Santa Anita and the Rose Bowl are a few minutes north-west and both are unmistakable from the air.
Mount Wilson with its antenna farm on the ridgeline, and behind it the San Gabriels running east to Baldy at 10,064 feet. Ten minutes of flying puts you close enough to understand why density altitude and mountain wind are on the syllabus.
From Van Nuys the picture flips. You climb over the Sepulveda Basin with the Santa Monica Mountains to the south, and Camarillo, Santa Barbara, Big Bear and Catalina all sit inside a training cross-country from the same ramp.
Not a broker’s rental and not one aeroplane shared by forty students. Every airframe here is ours, inspected on our schedule and flown by our instructors every day.

Single-engine training on the Standard and Comprehensive programmes is flown in the Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft. The Premium programme is flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Every aircraft is ours, and 14 CFR 91.409(b) puts each of them on a 100-hour inspection cycle because they are used for instruction for hire.
Forty percent of 7am June observations at Van Nuys met training minima. A full-motion Redbird MCX does not have a ceiling, and it does not have traffic either.
Simulator hours are built into every private pilot programme — 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. A standalone session is $189. For a San Gabriel Valley student it is also the one booking that is never wasted by a drive out here.
Every instructor holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight you fly with them. That part is regulation, not marketing.
The part that matters when you are driving in from the San Gabriel Valley is that the lesson happens. A two-instructor school means one person’s holiday costs you a month. Eleven means a booked slot is a flown slot, and if the aircraft goes unserviceable there is another one on the ramp.
You are matched to an instructor at the start and you can change if the fit is wrong. Ask. Nobody takes it personally, and the wrong pairing wastes more money than any other single thing in flight training.

Seventy reviews on Google, all of them five stars. The same three things keep coming up.
The line that comes up most in our Google reviews is about the debrief at the table afterwards, not the aeroplane. Twenty minutes with a whiteboard is where a lesson actually sticks.
Eleven instructors and a fleet we own means a booked Saturday stays a booked Saturday. Reviewers mention scheduling more often than they mention price.
You enrol at $10,900 or $15,900 and you finish at $10,900 or $15,900. Nobody writes a five-star review about a surprise invoice.
All 70 reviews are on Google. We do not aggregate a rating from anywhere else and we do not publish a figure we cannot point at.
Every option below has two doors. Book it outright, or book a free consultation and ask the awkward questions first. Both reach the same desk at Van Nuys.
A real lesson with your hands on the controls. The hour is loggable dual instruction, not a sightseeing ride.
40 logged hours in the Cessna, Piper or Diamond. The legal minimum route, and the cheapest way in.
60 logged hours, which is where the national average actually lands. The realistic option for most people.
The certificate flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, with glass avionics and the CAPS whole-airframe parachute.
The rating that makes a certificate useful on a marine-layer morning anywhere in this basin.
The shortest legal route to acting as pilot in command. Fewer privileges, fewer hours, less money.
Multi-engine add-on $5,100 · Solo Certificate $5,500 · Teens aged 10–15 $4,200 · zero to airline $89,000. Financing from $2,500 down. Every option above has two doors: book it now, or book a free consultation and ask the awkward questions first.
A discovery flight is a real lesson: you fly the aircraft from the left seat, the hour is loggable dual instruction, and the full $229 comes off any programme if you enrol within 24 hours. If you would rather sit down with the numbers first, the consultation is free and nothing is attached to it.
Rather write it down first? Use the contact form, or read what a discovery flight actually involves before you decide anything.
El Monte’s own field is KEMT, now called San Gabriel Valley Airport — Class D with a control tower and a single runway running roughly north and south. We train at Van Nuys Airport, about thirty miles west via the 210 and the 134, which is roughly forty minutes on a quiet Sunday and considerably longer in the weekday evening peak. We are open 9am to 9pm, seven days.
About thirty miles. The route is the 605 north to the 210 west through Pasadena, then the 134 and the 101 north-west to Balboa Boulevard. Forty minutes at nine on a Sunday, over an hour at five on a weekday. A 7pm lesson is a much easier drive than a 5pm one, which is part of why we stay open until nine.
KEMT is Class D with its own tower, sitting in one of the busiest corners of the Los Angeles basin. Brackett Field and Chino are Class D nearby, Ontario carries Class C to the east, and Burbank Class C is to the north-west. Van Nuys adds one thing El Monte does not have overhead: the Los Angeles Class B shelf, which you learn to work as routine rather than as checkride preparation.
Our published programmes are $10,900 for the Standard private pilot course with 40 logged hours, $15,900 for the Comprehensive course with 60 logged hours, and $22,500 for the Premium course flown in a Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Aircraft time inside a programme is $179 an hour, wet, single-engine. Financing starts at $2,500 down.
Yes, and usefully. The mountains rise off the valley floor a few miles north of El Monte and reach 10,064 feet at Mount San Antonio. On hot afternoons and during Santa Ana wind events the air off that terrain is rough, so students based on the eastern side of the basin meet mechanical turbulence, density altitude and mountain lee effects earlier than students based somewhere flat.
We did not measure El Monte, so we will not publish a number for it. Our twelve-month study covered fifteen airports and found 355 flyable days at Van Nuys, 356 at Burbank, 343 at Santa Monica and 332 at Torrance, using a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility.
It depends what you want. For a private certificate alone, the field you can reach in ten minutes usually wins, because consistency matters more than anything else in flight training. Drive west for the things a small ramp cannot offer: a fleet the school owns, a full-motion Redbird MCX, a Cirrus SR22 Turbo, a Piper Seminole for the multi-engine add-on at $5,100, and daily flying under a Class B shelf.
Yes. A discovery flight for one is $229 for 60 minutes, you fly the aircraft from the left seat, and the hour is logged as dual instruction. If you enrol within 24 hours the full $229 comes off the programme price. It is also the cheapest way to find out whether the drive west is worth it to you.
The legal minimum is 40 hours under 14 CFR 61.109 and the national average sits between 60 and 75 hours. Flying two to three times a week, most students finish in five to eight months. Missed weeks cost more than missed hours, because you pay to relearn what you already paid to learn.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
