SAFETY FIRST
Very safety and detail oriented. Pre-flight briefing explained everything there was. To my knowledge, this flight school is exceptional in their ability.

Santa Monica has a real airport with a real tower, twelve miles from our ramp as the aeroplane flies and about fifteen by road. The honest question is not which field is better. It is what you get for twenty minutes on the 405, and whether the airport you learn at will still be there when you finish.
From Santa Monica to our ramp is one road: the 405 north over the Sepulveda Pass. At ten on a Sunday morning that is twenty minutes. At six on a Thursday evening it is closer to forty-five, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not driven it.
The asymmetry is worth planning around rather than complaining about. Northbound over the pass is worst in the evening peak; southbound is worst in the morning. A Santa Monica student who books a 10am or a 1pm lesson is going against the flow in both directions, and the drive stops being a factor in the decision.
Sepulveda Boulevard runs parallel to the freeway the whole way and is the fallback when the 405 stops moving under the Getty. It is slower on a good day and quicker on a bad one. People who grew up here know this. People who moved here last year find out the hard way.
We are at 7900 Balboa Boulevard, Suite 108A, on the west side of Van Nuys Airport. There is parking, and we are open 9am to 9pm seven days, which for a Westside commuter is the part that actually matters.

Santa Monica Municipal is a good airport to learn at and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is Class D with its own tower, it sits directly beneath the Los Angeles Class B shelf, and it is close enough to the water that your first real crosswind lesson happens by accident rather than by appointment. There is a well-regarded school on the field. Plenty of good pilots came out of it.
Two facts about the airport, rather than about anyone operating on it, matter more than any comparison of schools. The single runway, 3/21, was shortened to 3,500 feet at the end of 2017 under the consent agreement the City of Santa Monica signed with the FAA. That same agreement allows the city to close the airport after 31 December 2028.
That does not make training there a mistake. Most people finish a private pilot certificate in five to eight months, so a student starting this year is long done before any of it is settled. It does mean that if you are planning a longer run — private, then instrument, then a commercial certificate, four or five years of it — you are planning around a field whose future is a live political argument rather than a settled fact. Ask the question directly. Anyone who waves it away is not being straight with you.
Van Nuys is a different animal, and the difference is not subtle. Two parallel runways, the primary one long enough that Gulfstreams use it every working day, a tower that sequences light trainers between business jets and helicopters, and a fleet on the ramp that we own rather than broker. Add a Redbird MCX full-motion simulator that does not care what the ceiling is, and 9am to 9pm seven days a week. None of that is available eleven miles closer to the beach.
Santa Monica and Van Nuys are both Class D airports under the Los Angeles Class B shelf, and both sit well inside the 30-nautical-mile Mode C veil around LAX. A student at either field learns the transponder and ADS-B requirements of 14 CFR 91.215 and 91.225 as a daily habit rather than as a written-test question. That much they share.
What differs is the shape of the traffic problem. Santa Monica points you at the water. Depart to the west and inside two minutes you are over the bay with the Bravo overhead and not much else to deconflict with. That is calm, pleasant flying, and a slightly thin diet of radio work.
Van Nuys hands you a crowded box instead. Burbank sits roughly six miles east with Class C airspace around it. Whiteman, another Class D, is a few miles north-east. The Santa Monica Mountains close the valley to the south and the Santa Susanas to the north-west, so arrivals and departures funnel through a short list of reporting points that everybody uses and everybody knows. You will be told to follow a Citation, to extend downwind for a helicopter, and to report a landmark you have to find first.
Six lessons of that is uncomfortable. After that it is the most portable skill in your logbook. A pilot who learned somewhere quiet has to go and buy that confidence later, usually alone and usually badly. We set out the entry requirements, equipment and cloud clearances for every class in airspace classes explained.
Twelve months of NOAA ASOS observations, 1 August 2025 to 1 August 2026, at a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility — the threshold most schools apply to student solo and early dual.
| Airport | Flyable days per year |
|---|---|
| Van Nuys (KVNY) | 355 |
| Burbank (KBUR) | 356 |
| Santa Monica (KSMO) | 343 |
| Whiteman (KWHP) | 334 |
| Torrance (KTOA) | 332 |
Twelve days is not the story. Which twelve, and at what hour, is the story. Santa Monica sits eleven miles closer to the water than we do, and that is very close to the exact distance the marine layer needs to make a summer morning unusable.
In August, 84% of 7am observations at Van Nuys met training minima. The same hour at Santa Monica read 48%. If the only slot you can protect is Saturday at eight, that gap is not a statistic, it is your training schedule.
It cuts the other way after lunch. From 1pm onward in June, Van Nuys ran 97 to 100%, and the sea breeze that keeps the Westside cool also makes its afternoons genuinely lovely to fly. A Santa Monica pilot who flies afternoons loses almost nothing to weather. A Santa Monica pilot who insists on dawn in June loses about half of it. Method and raw tables for all fifteen airports are published in the flyable days study.
Off the departure end and you are over the bay inside a couple of minutes, with the pier, the Palisades bluffs and the Malibu shoreline strung out to the north-west. It is the best twenty minutes of scenery available from any runway in the county and nobody is going to argue otherwise.
You climb over the Sepulveda Basin and then choose. Ten minutes south-east puts Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood sign and the downtown towers off the wingtip. Fifteen minutes west across the Santa Monica Mountains and you are at Point Dume, coming down the same coast from the other end.
Camarillo, Santa Barbara, Big Bear and Catalina all sit inside a training flight. Catalina’s runway is on a plateau with drop-offs at both ends, and it is the approach most students still talk about years later.
Not a broker’s rental and not a tired airframe with twelve thousand hours on it. Every aircraft here is ours, inspected on our schedule and flown by our instructors every day.

Single-engine training on the Standard and Comprehensive programmes is flown in the Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft. The Premium programme is flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Every aircraft is ours, and 14 CFR 91.409(b) puts each of them on a 100-hour inspection cycle because they are used for instruction for hire.
Forty-eight percent of 7am August observations at Santa Monica met training minima. A full-motion Redbird MCX does not have a ceiling.
Simulator hours are built into every private pilot programme — 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. A standalone session is $189, and it is the one thing on this page that a coastal morning cannot cancel.
Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight you fly with them. That is the boring, load-bearing part.
The part that changes your life is scheduling. A two-instructor school means one person’s holiday is your lost month, and if you are already spending forty minutes on the 405 to get there, a cancelled lesson costs you a whole evening rather than an hour.
You are matched to an instructor at the start and you can change if the fit is wrong. Ask; nobody takes it personally. They teach here as a career rather than as a waiting room for an airline class date, and it shows most clearly in the debrief.

Seventy reviews on Google, all of them five stars. Three things come up again and again.
The line that comes up most in our Google reviews is about the debrief at the table afterwards, not the aeroplane. Twenty minutes with a whiteboard is where a lesson actually sticks.
Eleven instructors and a fleet we own means a booked Saturday stays a booked Saturday. Reviewers mention scheduling more often than they mention price.
You enrol at $10,900 or $15,900 and you finish at $10,900 or $15,900. Nobody writes a five-star review about a surprise invoice.
All 70 reviews are on Google. We do not aggregate a rating from anywhere else and we do not publish a figure we cannot point at.
Every option below has two doors. Book it now, or book a free consultation and ask the awkward questions first. Both go to the same people at the same desk.
A real lesson with your hands on the controls. The hour is loggable dual instruction, not a sightseeing ride.
40 logged hours in the Cessna, Piper or Diamond. The legal minimum route, and the cheapest way in.
60 logged hours, which is where the national average actually lands. The realistic option for most people.
The certificate flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, with glass avionics and the CAPS whole-airframe parachute.
The rating that makes a certificate useful on a marine-layer morning anywhere in this basin.
The shortest legal route to acting as pilot in command. Fewer privileges, fewer hours, less money.
Multi-engine add-on $5,100 · Solo Certificate $5,500 · Teens aged 10–15 $4,200 · zero to airline $89,000. Financing from $2,500 down. Every option above has two doors: book it now, or book a free consultation and ask the awkward questions first.
A discovery flight is a real lesson: you fly the aircraft from the left seat, the hour is loggable dual instruction, and the full $229 comes off any programme if you enrol within 24 hours. If you would rather sit down and go through the numbers before you fly anything, the consultation is free and there is no pitch attached to it.
Rather write it down first? Use the contact form, or read what a discovery flight actually involves before you decide anything.
Santa Monica Municipal Airport (KSMO) is a Class D field with its own control tower, sitting under the Los Angeles Class B shelf, and there is an established flight school on it. We train at Van Nuys Airport, about fifteen miles north over the Sepulveda Pass — twenty minutes on a clear Sunday and closer to forty-five in the Thursday evening peak. We are open 9am to 9pm, seven days.
Under the 2017 consent agreement between the City of Santa Monica and the FAA, the runway was shortened to 3,500 feet at the end of 2017 and the city may close the airport after 31 December 2028. Nothing about that stops you starting training there now, because a private pilot certificate takes most people five to eight months. It is worth asking about if you are planning several years of ratings.
About fifteen miles by road and twelve by air. It is one freeway, the 405 north over the Sepulveda Pass, and the drive runs twenty minutes off-peak to about forty-five in the evening peak. Booking a 10am or 1pm lesson puts you against the flow in both directions.
Our published programmes are $10,900 for the Standard private pilot course with 40 logged hours, $15,900 for the Comprehensive course with 60 logged hours, and $22,500 for the Premium course flown in a Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Aircraft time inside a programme is $179 an hour, wet, single-engine. Financing starts at $2,500 down.
We measured 343 at Santa Monica against 355 at Van Nuys, over the twelve months to 1 August 2026, using a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility. The gap is concentrated in summer mornings: in August, 48% of 7am observations at Santa Monica met training minima against 84% at Van Nuys.
Class D, with a control tower, underneath the Los Angeles Class B shelf and inside the 30-nautical-mile Mode C veil around LAX. That means the transponder and ADS-B requirements of 14 CFR 91.215 and 91.225 apply from your first lesson. Van Nuys is also Class D under the same shelf, with Burbank Class C about six miles to the east.
Yes, and most people should. A discovery flight for one is $229 for 60 minutes, you fly the aircraft from the left seat, and the hour is logged as dual instruction. If you enrol within 24 hours the full $229 comes off the programme price. Longer 90 and 120 minute options exist for the same flight.
The legal minimum is 40 hours under 14 CFR 61.109 and the national average sits between 60 and 75 hours. Flying two to three times a week, most students finish in five to eight months. Consistency matters more than anything else, which is the real argument for picking the field you will actually drive to.
No. Students drive to Van Nuys from Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, Pacific Palisades and the whole Westside, and everything inside 150 miles of the ramp is a normal commute for a lesson. What matters is that you still make the drive in month four, so be honest with yourself about the hour you book.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
