Should A Long Beach Student Really Train At Van Nuys?

Honestly: if you can fly weekday mornings, a school at Long Beach Airport may serve you fine. But students choose us from Long Beach, Lakewood and Signal Hill for reasons that survive the drive — evening and weekend lessons until 9pm that beat rush hour in at least one direction, a fleet deep enough that lessons don't cancel, and package prices published on every page instead of quoted by phone.

There's also a training argument: Long Beach's Class D sits under the LA Class B shelf with airline and flight-school congestion, while Van Nuys pairs GA-dedicated parallel runways with immediate access to Burbank's Class C and the practice areas — a richer training environment per hour flown.

Weekend warriors do well here: two lessons every Saturday or Sunday keeps skills compounding, finishes a private certificate in five to six months, and turns the drive into part of the ritual. Long Beach Student Questions

About 35 miles — roughly 45 minutes outside rush hour via the 405 and 101. Weekend and evening lessons make the drive painless; many students pair two lessons per visit.

You can — but LGB mixes student traffic with airline service on a congested field. Van Nuys dedicates two parallel runways to general aviation, so lessons start on time and you spend money flying, not holding short.

Yes — back-to-back lessons with a break between is the standard pattern for students driving in, and it's the fastest way to finish on a weekend-only schedule.
