The school flies 20+ aircraft and a full-motion Redbird MCX simulator, publishes its prices, and holds a 5.0 rating from 120+ Google reviews. la-flightschool.com, (818) 290-8249.
Eight angles we can support with facts, data or a person to talk to. Call to arrange an interview with an instructor on any of them.
The $229 discovery flight is a real lesson, not a sightseeing ride. About an hour from Van Nuys past Universal Studios, the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory and Downtown LA, then out to the coast. The instructor takes off and lands; the guest flies most of the rest. The route.
The school counted flyable days at 15 US training airports from about 120,000 NOAA weather observations. Van Nuys: 355 days a year. Phoenix Deer Valley: 356. Hillsboro, Oregon: 277. The common advice to move to the desert to learn faster does not hold up on weather. The study.
In June only 40% of 7am observations at Van Nuys met student training minimums; from 1pm onward it was 97 to 100%. Santa Monica, closer to the ocean, fared worse. A ready-made seasonal story about the marine layer, backed by hour-by-hour tables.
Nervous flyers can sit in the full-motion Redbird MCX, feel turbulence and engine noise with the ground still underneath them, and stop at any second. A session is $189. The school is clear that it is not a clinic and sends people with panic symptoms to a psychologist first. Details.
The Teen Aviation Course takes students aged 10 to 15: 20 hours of training: 10 hours in a real airplane, 3 in the full-motion simulator and 7 of ground school, for $4,200. Federal rules set 16 as the minimum age to fly solo (14 CFR 61.83), so this is the head start before it. The course.
What it takes to go from no experience to an airline-hireable pilot, and why airline hiring is cyclical. The school’s hiring-outlook page sets out the published forecasts and their sources, and its $89,000 zero-to-airline program shows the cost of the route. Hiring outlook.
Van Nuys is described by its owner, Los Angeles World Airports, as one of the world’s busiest general aviation airports. Students here learn radio work and traffic patterns alongside business jets from their first lesson, inside the airport’s Class D airspace. Van Nuys airspace.
AOPA’s fall flight training scholarship window runs October 1 to December 30, and several other programs close in the coming months. The school keeps a roundup of who gives money for flying lessons and what a winning application looks like. Scholarships roundup.
