The Route

What You See, In The Order You See It

View across the wing of a small airplane flying toward the Hollywood Hills

Off The Runway And Over The Valley

Van Nuys sits in the middle of the San Fernando Valley, so the first few minutes give you the whole grid of it — Sherman Oaks, Studio City, the 101 running east. Your instructor takes the airplane off, gets you clear of the pattern, and then hands it over. Most people are flying within four or five minutes of leaving the ground.

The Cahuenga Pass And The Studio Lots

Turning southeast you come up the pass with Universal Studios on your right — the backlot, the tram route, the whole thing laid out flat. Warner Bros and Disney sit off toward Burbank behind you, and the Hollywood Bowl appears as a white shell tucked into the hillside just before the Sign.

The Sign Itself

An airplane cannot hover, which turns out to be an advantage: instead of one static view you circle, so the Sign passes your wingtip from several angles and both sides of the aircraft get it. Mount Lee, the transmission towers, the letters themselves. It is one of the few times you see it as a piece of a landscape rather than a postcard.

Tell your instructor if you want another pass. On a 60-minute flight there is time for two or three.

Griffith, Downtown And Home

From the Sign it is a short run east to the Griffith Observatory sitting on its shoulder of the hill, with the downtown skyline stacked up behind it. On a clear day you can see the San Gabriels to the north and the ocean to the west in the same glance. Then back over the hills to Van Nuys — your instructor lands.

How It Works

Booked To Landed In About Two Hours

1

Brief And Preflight — 20 Minutes

Meet at 7900 Balboa Blvd. Walk out to the aircraft, inspect it with your instructor, learn what the controls do and exactly what happens next. This is a real lesson briefing, not a safety video.

2

Fly — 60, 90 Or 120 Minutes

Instructor takes off. You fly the route. The Sign, the studios, the Bowl, the Observatory — and on a longer booking, the coast as well. Your guest listens in on a headset and takes the photographs.

3

Debrief And Logbook

Instructor lands, then signs your first entry in a real pilot logbook. That hour counts toward a private pilot certificate if you ever want one. If not, keep the logbook as the souvenir.

Fly It Yourself, Or Give The Flight To Someone Else

Safety

Flying The Hollywood Hills Safely

The airspace around the Hollywood Hills is busy and it sits underneath the Los Angeles Class B shelf. That is exactly why doing it with a flight school and an instructor is the right way to do it.

🗼

Controlled Airspace Throughout

Van Nuys is a towered Class D field and the Hollywood corridor sits under the LA Class B. Air traffic control is separating you from other aircraft the whole way.

👨‍✈️

A Professional In Command

Your instructor holds an FAA commercial or airline transport pilot certificate, a flight instructor certificate and a current medical, and is pilot in command for the entire flight.

✈

100-Hour Inspections

FAR 91.409(b) requires aircraft used for flight instruction for hire to be inspected every 100 flight hours — on top of the annual inspection every aircraft gets.

🎛

Dual Controls

There is a complete second set of controls in front of your instructor. They can take the airplane back instantly, and they fly the takeoff and landing.

🗻

Terrain-Aware Routing

We fly the hills at altitudes that keep comfortable clearance above the terrain and the Griffith Park area, not at the minimums.

🌤

No-Go Means No-Go

Marginal weather, no flight. Free reschedule, or switch to the Redbird simulator. The call is always the instructor's.

FAQ

Hollywood Sign Flight Questions

Yes. The Hollywood Sign is not inside restricted airspace. It sits beneath the Los Angeles Class B shelf in airspace used by general aviation every day, and we fly it at altitudes that keep safe clearance above the terrain of Mount Lee and Griffith Park.

Close enough that the individual letters fill a phone camera frame comfortably, while staying at a safe and legal height above the terrain. Because an airplane circles rather than hovers, you get several passes from different angles instead of one fixed viewpoint.

The Sign itself is about ten minutes from takeoff, and a 60-minute flight covers the Sign, the Bowl, the studio lots and the Griffith Observatory with time for repeat passes. A 90- or 120-minute booking adds the Santa Monica and Malibu coastline.

Yes. Your instructor handles the takeoff and landing; you fly the route, including the passes over the Hollywood Hills, with the instructor coaching you and able to take over at any moment.

Mid-morning gives you clear air and light on the front of the Sign. Late afternoon gives warmer light and longer shadows across the hills but slightly bumpier air. Book the earliest slot of the day if smooth air matters more to you than golden light.

Yes — the $299 two-person flight is exactly that. You fly from the left seat; your guest sits alongside or behind with a headset and shoots the whole thing.
