~$500–800helicopter, two people, 20–35 minutes
3×more airtime per dollar in the airplane
Youfly the airplane. Not the helicopter.
The Short Answer

Which Should You Book?

Book The Helicopter If…

There are real reasons to choose a helicopter, and we would rather tell you than pretend otherwise.

  • You want to hover. A helicopter can stop and hang over the Hollywood Sign; an airplane has to keep moving and circle it.
  • You want to fly very low over downtown. Helicopters routinely operate lower over the urban core than fixed-wing aircraft.
  • You want doors-off photography. That is a helicopter speciality and we cannot match it.
  • You want to be flown, full stop — no briefing, no participation, just a ride.
  • You want a landing on a rooftop or a short hop between two points in the city.

Book The Airplane If…

For most people booking 'an air tour of LA' as an experience or a gift, the airplane is the better buy — and it is not close on price.

  • You want the most time in the air for your money. Sixty minutes for $299 for two, versus roughly 20 to 35 minutes for a comparable helicopter spend.
  • You want to actually fly. This is the entire difference. You hold the controls; the helicopter is a ride.
  • You want range. An airplane will take you to Catalina, up the Malibu coast to Point Dume, or south to Palos Verdes inside a normal booking. Most helicopter tours stay in the basin.
  • You want a quieter, smoother cabin. Fixed-wing cruise is noticeably less noisy and less vibratory than a piston helicopter.
  • You want something that might actually change what you do with your life. Some people walk off a discovery flight and start training.

Safety

Is One Safer Than The Other?

This gets asked constantly and deserves a careful answer rather than a marketing one. Both commercial helicopter air tours and instructional fixed-wing flying are conducted under FAA oversight by professional pilots in maintained aircraft, and both have strong safety records. Neither is dangerous in any everyday sense.

There is one structural difference worth understanding. A single-engine airplane that loses power becomes a glider — it keeps flying forward and the pilot has time and distance to pick a landing site. Instructors practice exactly this maneuver with every student, repeatedly, and it is a required item on the private pilot checkride. A helicopter handles engine failure through autorotation, which is also a trained and practiced procedure but demands a much faster, more precise response with far less margin.

Alongside that: aircraft used for flight instruction for hire must be inspected every 100 flight hours under FAR 91.409(b), not merely once a year. And our Cirrus SR22T carries CAPS, a rocket-deployed parachute for the entire airframe — nothing in the helicopter world has an equivalent.

None of this makes helicopter tours unsafe. It does mean that if safety margin is the deciding factor for you, the fixed-wing answer is the more conservative one.

FAQ

Helicopter Vs Airplane Questions

Published Los Angeles helicopter tour rates in 2026 generally run about $200 to $400 per person for a 20 to 35 minute tour, with longer or private charters costing considerably more. Prices vary by operator, route and time of day, so confirm directly with the company. For comparison, our airplane discovery flight is $299 for two people for a full 60 minutes.

For two people, substantially. Two helicopter seats on a typical LA tour will usually cost $400 to $800 for 20 to 35 minutes. Our two-person airplane flight is $299 for 60 minutes — roughly a third of the cost per minute in the air, and you fly the aircraft yourself.

Yes. The Sign is about eight miles from the end of the Van Nuys runway and it is on almost every route we fly. An airplane circles it rather than hovering over it, which gives you several passes from different angles instead of one static position.

In cruise, the airplane, comfortably. Piston helicopters vibrate and are significantly louder. An airplane in smooth morning air over Los Angeles is a very calm place to be. In gusty afternoon conditions both get bumpy, which is why we recommend morning slots to anyone concerned about it.

Not with us — that is genuinely a helicopter speciality and we would point you to a helicopter operator for it. What an airplane gives you instead is a high wing or a low wing with excellent forward and side visibility, an hour or two of it, and the ability to ask your instructor for another pass at any subject you want.

None. Every guest on a discovery flight is flying an aircraft for the first time. Your instructor handles takeoff and landing, briefs you fully beforehand, and can take the controls back instantly.
