Why Sunset

You Get Two Completely Different Flights In One Booking

Book the last daylight slot and you take off into one version of Los Angeles and land in another. On the way out, the low sun rakes across the Santa Monica Mountains and throws every canyon into relief — terrain you fly over at midday and barely notice suddenly has depth. Over the water the light goes flat and metallic and the surf lines turn white against it.

Then, in the space of about fifteen minutes, it all changes. The sun drops behind Point Dume, the sky above the ocean goes orange and then that deep blue that photographers call the blue hour, and the entire basin begins to light up beneath you. By the time you turn back toward Van Nuys, the Valley is a grid of amber and the freeways are two rivers of red and white.

Most people book an air tour expecting one good view. This one gives you the coastline in gold and the city in lights, on the same flight, for the same price.

Getting The Timing Right

Book The Slot, Not The Hour

Sunset in Los Angeles moves by nearly three hours across the year — roughly 4:45pm in December and just after 8:00pm in late June. When you book, tell us you want the sunset slot and we will set the departure against the actual sunset time for your date rather than a fixed clock time.

  • Winter (Nov–Feb): departures around 3:45–4:15pm
  • Spring and autumn: departures around 5:45–6:45pm
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): departures around 6:45–7:15pm
  • We aim to have you airborne 45 to 60 minutes before sunset

Sixty Minutes Or Ninety?

Sixty minutes is enough. You will be at the coast for the sun going down and back over the Valley as the lights come up. Ninety minutes buys you the ability to hold over the water through the whole color change and then take the long way home over downtown — which, if photographs are the point of the exercise, is the one we would book.

What The Air Is Like

Late-day air over Los Angeles is usually more active than the morning — the ground has been heating all day and the thermals are still working. Expect some light bumps on the climb out, which almost always smooth out as the sun goes down and the ground cools. If turbulence genuinely worries you, book a morning flight instead and let us give you the coast in glass-smooth air; the light is less dramatic but the ride is better.

The Night Rating Detail Nobody Mentions

Flying at night requires additional currency and training beyond a basic private pilot certificate, and our instructors hold it. If your flight extends past official sunset — which on a sunset booking it usually does — you are flying with an instructor who is night-current and in an aircraft equipped and inspected for night operations. It is one more reason a flight school is the right operator for this particular flight.

Flying Into Dusk, Safely

A flight that straddles sunset has requirements a midday flight does not. All of them are covered before you get in the aircraft.

Flight after official sunset requires additional currency under the FARs. The instructor flying with you holds it, and flies the takeoff and landing regardless of the light.

FAQ

Sunset Flight Questions

We set the departure against the actual sunset time for your date, aiming to get you airborne 45 to 60 minutes before. That means roughly 3:45pm in December and around 7:00pm in late June. Tell us you want the sunset slot and we will do the arithmetic.

No. A sunset flight costs exactly the same as a midday one — $229 for one person for 60 minutes, $299 for two. The only practical difference is that sunset slots book out further ahead, so give yourself a week or two of notice, more for a weekend.

On a 60-minute sunset booking, usually the last ten or fifteen minutes are after sunset, so you land in twilight with the city lit. On a 90-minute booking you will be properly in the dark for the run home over downtown, which is the best part.

Night flight requires additional pilot currency and specific aircraft equipment under the FARs, and both are in place on every one of our flights. Your instructor is night-current, the aircraft is night-equipped and inspected every 100 hours, and Van Nuys is a lit, towered airport. Your instructor flies the landing.

Sometimes on the climb out, because the ground has been heating all day. It typically smooths as the sun goes down. If a smooth ride matters more to you than the light, book the first slot of the morning instead — that is the calmest air of the day over Los Angeles.
