Aviation School, Or A Degree, Or Neither

Aviation school describes three very different things: a four-year university aviation degree, a full-time academy, and a Part 61 flight school. They end in the same FAA certificates by different routes, at different costs, on different timelines. One of them gives you 500 hours of credit the others cannot. This page lays all three out, including the parts that do not suit us.

Aviation School Is Three Different Things

Type the phrase into a search box and you get three unrelated products. A university aviation program is a bachelor degree with flight training attached, four years, tuition plus flight fees. An academy is a full-time, structured, usually residential course that runs from zero to a commercial certificate in twelve to twenty months. A Part 61 flight school, which is what we are, teaches the same certificates around your own calendar with no cohort and no fixed end date.

All three produce identical FAA certificates. Nothing printed on a commercial pilot certificate records which of them you attended, and no airline application asks you to attach a course outline. What differs is the money, the elapsed time, the flexibility, and one genuine regulatory advantage that only the degree route carries.

The other thing people mean by aviation school has nothing to do with flying: maintenance, dispatch, air traffic control and avionics are all aviation careers with their own schools and their own certificates. Those are further down this page, because if that is what you actually want, we are not the right place and you should know that in the first minute rather than the tenth.

The Comparison

The Three Routes, Side By Side

Same certificates at the end of each. The differences are in time, money and how much of your life the route wants.

RouteElapsed timeWhat you are buyingThe catch
University aviation degreeFour yearsA bachelor degree, flight training, and eligibility for a restricted ATP at 1,000 hours under 14 CFR 61.160Tuition sits on top of flight costs, and the schedule is the university calendar rather than yours
Full-time academyTwelve to twenty monthsA structured, sequenced course from zero to commercial, usually with a cohortLarge sums due early, often financed, and a fixed timetable that assumes you are not working
Part 61 flight schoolTwo years part-time, faster if you fly dailyThe same certificates, taken in the order that suits you, paid for stage by stageNobody chases you. Progress depends entirely on how often you book
Maintenance, dispatch or ATC schoolTwelve to twenty-four monthsAn aviation career that is not flying, with its own FAA certificateA completely different school and a completely different application. Not us

Our zero-to-airline program is $89,000 and covers the private certificate, instrument rating, commercial certificate and instructor certificates. That figure is the training. It is not tuition, there is no degree attached, and it does not include the cost of living while you build hours.

The Honest Part

The Degree Route Has One Advantage We Cannot Match

14 CFR 61.160 allows a graduate of an FAA-authorised bachelor degree aviation program to qualify for a restricted airline transport pilot certificate at 1,000 hours of total time, instead of the 1,500 that 14 CFR 61.159 requires of everybody else. An associate degree from an authorised program sets the number at 1,250. Military pilots qualify at 750.

That is not a marketing difference. Five hundred hours is roughly a year of full-time instructing, and it is a year of instructor pay rather than airline pay. Anybody comparing routes on cost alone and ignoring 61.160 is doing the arithmetic wrong, and plenty of pages written by flight schools quietly leave it out.

We are a Part 61 school. We cannot offer a degree, and our students reach the airline hiring minimum at 1,500 hours. If the R-ATP hour reduction matters more to you than flexibility or cash flow, a university aviation program is the correct choice and you should take it.

Where our route wins is everywhere else: you can start next week, you pay stage by stage rather than by semester, you keep your current income while you train, and if life interrupts you the training waits rather than restarting. For a thirty-four-year-old changing careers, those usually outweigh 500 hours. For an eighteen-year-old with funding and four years, often they do not.

The Other Careers

Aviation Jobs That Are Not Flying The Aircraft

Each of these has its own FAA certificate, its own school and its own entry rules. We do not teach any of them, and the fastest way to waste a year is to enrol in flight training when what you actually wanted was one of these.

A&P

Aircraft Maintenance Technician

The airframe and powerplant certificate. You either attend a 14 CFR Part 147 aviation maintenance technician school or document 30 months of practical experience under 14 CFR 65.77, then pass written, oral and practical tests. It is the aviation career with the most consistent demand and the least glamour.

DX

Aircraft Dispatcher

The person who plans the flight and shares legal responsibility for it with the captain. Under 14 CFR 65.53 you must be at least 23 to hold the certificate, and courses typically run five to six weeks full-time. It is an office job with aviation knowledge, and it pays reasonably from the start.

ATC

Air Traffic Controller

Hired and trained by the FAA rather than by a school, through the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. Entry-level applicants generally must be under 31 when they apply, which makes it the one aviation career with a hard age gate at the front rather than a medical one.

AVI

Avionics Technician

Electronics rather than engines: radios, navigation systems, autopilots and glass panels. Increasingly the better-paid half of maintenance, because the systems are getting more complicated faster than the airframes are.

107

Remote Pilot, Part 107

The commercial drone certificate. You must be 16 or older and pass a knowledge test, with no flight hours required. It is the cheapest FAA certificate in existence and it is genuinely useful in survey, film and inspection work in Los Angeles.

OPS

Airline And Airport Operations

Scheduling, crew planning, ramp management and station operations. Mostly hired on general business skills rather than an aviation certificate, and the most common way people get into the industry without training for it.

Los Angeles

What Do The Aviation Schools Near Me In Los Angeles Teach?

In Los Angeles the flying half is taught mostly at Part 61 schools on the field at Van Nuys, Whiteman, Santa Monica, Torrance and Long Beach, while the degree route sits at universities and the maintenance and dispatch routes sit at dedicated technical schools. If you want to fly for a living and you live in this city, a Part 61 school at a towered field is the normal answer.

We teach the flying side only, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A at Van Nuys Airport, from 9AM to 9PM seven days a week. Private certificate, instrument rating, commercial certificate, multi-engine, instructor certificates, and the $89,000 program that runs the whole sequence. We do not teach maintenance, dispatch or air traffic control, and we do not award degrees.

Van Nuys is worth choosing on its own terms. It is a Class D field under the LAX Class B shelf, so radio work, clearances and sequencing among faster traffic are part of lesson one instead of something you drive somewhere to learn later. And it flies: 355 days a year cleared our training weather threshold in a study we ran on twelve months of NOAA observations at fifteen airports, published in full at our flyable days study.

If you are comparing several schools rather than several routes, the framework for that is on flight schools near me. If you are earlier than that and still deciding whether any of this is for you, start with the flight school near me guide on our home page.

The Verdict

Is An Aviation Degree Worth Four Years?

It depends on two things, and neither of them is how much you love aeroplanes.

01

Take The Degree If The 500 Hours Matter More Than The Money

Reaching an airline at 1,000 hours instead of 1,500 under 14 CFR 61.160 is worth roughly a year of your career, earned at the start of a career when a year of airline pay against instructor pay is the widest gap you will ever see. If you are 18, funded, and certain about the career, that is a strong argument.

02

Take The Degree If You Want A Fallback

Medical certification can end a flying career at any point, and a degree is a qualification that survives that. It does not have to be an aviation degree to do that job, and a cheaper degree in something else, taken alongside Part 61 training, is a route very few people consider and it is often the better one.

03

Skip It If You Are Changing Careers

Four years and tuition on top of flight costs is a very heavy price for a 500-hour credit when you already hold a degree in something. Train part-time, keep your income, and you will be flying commercially sooner than the degree route in almost every case.

04

Nobody Requires It

The FAA requires no college degree for any pilot certificate and no US airline requires one to be hired. It helps at the margin with some carriers. Anyone telling you a degree is mandatory is selling one.

05

Read Any Promise Of Employment Twice

No school can promise you a job at an airline, because no school does the hiring. Read any promise of employment, any conditional tuition refund and any partner airline arrangement extremely carefully, and get what it actually commits to in writing before you sign a loan.

06

Budget For The Middle, Not The Training

From your commercial certificate to 1,500 hours you will most likely be a flight instructor, on instructor pay, for 18 months to two years. That stretch is where career changers run out of money, and it is not covered by any training package, ours included.

The Fleet

The Aircraft You Would Actually Train In

Owned outright and maintained on our own schedule, which is the practical difference between a school and a broker. A career sequence needs a complex single and a twin on the same ramp, and both are here.

Single-engine training on the Standard and Comprehensive programs is flown in the Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft. The Premium program is flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo with its full glass cockpit.

Redbird MCX

Where The Instrument Rating Gets Cheaper

A full-motion, fully enclosed, FAA-approved simulator on site. Approaches, holds, partial panel and engine failures can be flown, frozen, discussed and reflown, which is the single most efficient thing available to anyone building toward a commercial certificate.

Simulator hours are inside every private pilot program — 2 on Standard and Premium, 5 on Comprehensive. A standalone session is $189 and it never cancels for weather.

Your Instructor

The People Teaching A Career Route Should Have One

Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate, a flight instructor certificate and a current FAA medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight. Eleven of them, which is what makes a full-time training schedule possible rather than aspirational.

Career students feel instructor turnover more than anybody. A commercial course has a defined sequence, and losing your instructor at hour 180 means somebody new has to work out what you can already do before they can teach you anything. We hire people who want to teach here rather than people counting down to 1,500 hours, which is why that happens less often.

Ask any school you are considering how long its instructors have been on staff. It is a more revealing question than anything about the fleet, and it takes ten seconds to ask.

FAQ

Aviation School Questions People Actually Ask

The phrase covers three different products: a four-year university aviation degree, a full-time academy running zero to commercial in twelve to twenty months, and a Part 61 flight school teaching the same certificates around your own calendar. All three end in identical FAA certificates. The certificate itself records nothing about which route you took.

No. The FAA requires no college degree for any pilot certificate and no US airline requires one to be hired. What every airline requires is a commercial certificate with an instrument rating, a first-class medical, and the flight hours for an ATP certificate, which is 1,500 hours under 14 CFR 61.159.

A restricted airline transport pilot certificate lets you fly for a regional airline below the standard 1,500 hours. Under 14 CFR 61.160 a graduate of an FAA-authorised bachelor degree aviation program qualifies at 1,000 hours, an associate degree from an authorised program at 1,250, and military pilots at 750. It is the one genuine advantage a university aviation program holds over a Part 61 flight school.

It is worth it if reaching an airline 500 hours earlier matters more to you than four years of tuition, or if you want a qualification that survives losing your medical certificate. It is usually not worth it for a career changer who already holds a degree, because training part-time while keeping your income gets you flying commercially sooner and for less.

Our published Part 61 sequence from zero to airline-ready is $89,000 and covers the private certificate, instrument rating, commercial certificate and instructor certificates. A university aviation degree adds four years of tuition on top of comparable flight costs. Neither figure includes living expenses during the instructing years that follow.

About two years of training to a commercial certificate with an instrument rating if you fly three or four times a week, then 18 months to two years working as a flight instructor to reach the 1,500 hours an ATP requires. Anybody quoting a much shorter total is counting only the paid training and leaving out the hour building.

Aircraft maintenance technician, aircraft dispatcher, air traffic controller, avionics technician and airline operations. Each has its own certificate and its own school: maintenance through a 14 CFR Part 147 school or 30 months of documented experience under 14 CFR 65.77, dispatch with a minimum age of 23 under 14 CFR 65.53, and air traffic control hired directly by the FAA with an entry age limit under 31.

No school can, because no school does the hiring. Airline hiring runs in cycles that have wrong-footed far better forecasters than any flight school, and anyone starting training today should plan for at least one bad hiring year in their first decade. Read any employment promise or conditional refund extremely carefully before signing a loan against it.

Part 141 has lower legal minimums, 190 hours for a commercial certificate against 250 under Part 61, but almost nobody finishes at either number, and the gap is hours you build rather than instruction you buy. Part 61 suits anyone with a job, because the syllabus bends around your calendar and no lesson repeats for administrative reasons. Choose a Part 141 course if you need an M-1 student visa, which a Part 61 school cannot support.

The money between the commercial certificate and 1,500 hours. Almost everyone instructs through that stretch, it lasts 18 months to two years, and it pays modestly with none of the benefits of the job you probably left. That is where most career changers stop, and it is not covered by any training package, including ours.

We teach the flying side at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A at Van Nuys Airport, 9AM to 9PM seven days, from private pilot through to instructor certificates. Van Nuys is a Class D field under the LAX Class B shelf, so controlled airspace and radio work start on lesson one, and 355 days a year clear our training weather threshold based on twelve months of NOAA observations.
