SAFETY FIRST
Very safety and detail oriented. Pre-flight briefing explained everything there was. To my knowledge, this flight school is exceptional in their ability.

Five California institutions held FAA authority to certify graduates for a restricted airline transport pilot certificate on the list revised 15 September 2026. That authority, set out in 14 CFR 61.160, is what separates a flight college from a degree with flying on the side. Here are the 2-year and 4-year routes, what each costs, and how a degree combines with Part 61 training at Van Nuys.
Part of the LA Flight School training fleet on the ramp at the end of a training day.
Search for flight colleges and you get three kinds of institution under one label. They differ in what the degree does for your airline minimum and in who actually flies with you.
Four-year aviation universities award a bachelor’s degree with an aviation major and run, or partner with, a Part 141 pilot school. The ones on the FAA’s restricted ATP list can certify graduates for the 1,000-hour or 1,250-hour minimum.
Community colleges with aviation programs award an associate degree or a certificate. Some offer flight labs through contracted flight schools; some teach ground school only and send students to local schools to fly. On the September 2026 FAA list, no California community college appears, so these associate degrees do not by themselves lower the airline minimum.
Aviation degrees without flight training, such as aviation administration, prepare you for airline, airport and safety management. You can pair one with flight training anywhere, at the standard 1,500-hour airline minimum.
None of this is required to fly. The FAA sets no education requirement for any pilot certificate, a point covered in our guide to whether you need a college degree to be a pilot. For the wider market, including academies and independent schools, start with the guide to flight schools in California.

| Question | Part 141 College Program | Part 61 Flight School |
|---|---|---|
| Private pilot minimum | 35 hours in an approved course (Part 141 Appendix B) | 40 hours (14 CFR 61.109) |
| Syllabus | FAA-approved training course outline with stage checks | Instructor plans training to the regulation |
| Calendar | Semester terms and course sequence | Starts any week; lessons booked around you |
| Restricted ATP eligibility | Yes, if the institution holds FAA authority and you meet 61.160 | No; standard 1,500 hours under 61.159 |
| Credit for earlier training | Capped at 25 percent of course flight training from a non-141 source (141.77(c)) | All logged training counts |
| How you pay | Tuition plus flight lab fees, often paid separately | Program price or hourly; no tuition |
| Degree at the end | Yes | No |
The FAA certificate and the checkride standard are the same either way. The full comparison is in our guides to Part 141 flight schools, Part 61 flight schools and Part 61 vs Part 141.
A qualifying degree lowers the total flight time needed to apply for an airline transport pilot certificate with restricted privileges. The restricted certificate is used to fly as a first officer at an airline. The conditions are specific, and most of the confusion about colleges for pilot training comes from skipping them.
| Route | Requirement | Total Time |
|---|---|---|
| Standard ATP, 61.159 | No degree requirement | 1,500 |
| Bachelor’s degree, 61.160(b) | Aviation major, at least 60 semester credit hours of recognized aviation coursework | 1,000 |
| Bachelor’s degree, 61.160(d) | Aviation major, at least 30 but fewer than 60 recognized credit hours | 1,250 |
| Associate degree, 61.160(c) | Aviation major, at least 30 recognized credit hours | 1,250 |
| Military pilot, 61.160(a) | Graduate of US military undergraduate pilot training | 750 |
The degree must come from an institution holding a letter of authorization under 14 CFR 61.169. The FAA publishes the list; in California it named California Aeronautical University, California Baptist University, San Diego Christian College, San Jose State University and William Jessup University on 15 September 2026.
The commercial certificate and instrument rating must be earned through a Part 141 pilot school associated with the institution, under a training agreement in 14 CFR 141.26. Training at a Part 61 school does not meet this condition.
Under 61.160(e) you still meet the 61.159 experience rules, except that 200 hours of cross-country time is accepted. The remaining hours can be built anywhere, including as a flight instructor.

In plain terms: a degree saves 250 to 500 hours of flight time only when the commercial and instrument training happen inside the college’s Part 141 structure. The background on the 1,500-hour rule is in our guide to the ATP certificate and the 1,500 hour rule.
Each program below was checked on the institution’s own website in October 2026. Details change, so confirm admission, flight partner and fees with the institution before you apply.
Offers a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics and an Associate of Science in Aviation Studies, and describes itself as an FAA-approved Part 141 flight school. Campuses listed in Bakersfield, San Diego and Ventura County, with Ventura County flight training at Oxnard.
Bachelor of Science majors in Aviation Flight and Aviation Management in Riverside. Part 141 flight training at Riverside Municipal Airport, a towered Class D field about two miles from campus. The department says students earn about 250 flight hours before graduating.
Bachelor of Science in Aviation with a Professional Flight option. Students choose an affiliated FAA-approved flight school in the San José area and pay it directly; flight costs are not part of SJSU tuition. Coursework includes Part 141 flight courses.
Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Associate of Science degrees in Aviation at the Rocklin campus near Sacramento. Flight training runs through partner flight schools, with Part 141 and Part 61 pathways offered, and the university states graduates may use the restricted ATP.
California State University, Los Angeles offers a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Administration through its College of Engineering, Computer Science and Technology. Its program page describes airline administration, aviation safety and air traffic control, and does not describe flight training.
An aviation administration degree and Part 61 flight training can run side by side, since the degree is not tied to a flight school. The airline minimum on that route is the standard 1,500 hours under 61.159.
San Diego Christian College in Santee also appears on the FAA list for a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Technology, with a letter of authorization last revised in 2017. We could not confirm current program details on the college’s own website, so ask the college directly. If you are weighing a university against an academy, our guide to airline cadet programs covers the airline-run routes, and how to become a commercial pilot lays out the certificates in order.
California community colleges charge a $46 per unit enrollment fee, so the classroom part of an aviation associate degree is inexpensive. Flight time is billed separately, and none of these colleges was on the FAA restricted ATP list in September 2026.
Mt. SAC Aeronautics runs a Commercial Flight program with optional flight training for college credit, alongside air traffic control, aircraft dispatch and unmanned aircraft programs. Its catalog calls it the largest two-year aviation program in California. College aircraft are based at Brackett Field in La Verne.
Aviation Science, Associate in Science, at least 60 units, with a professional piloting track and a non-flying flight operations specialization. Flight lab is competitive, needs concurrent ground school and is delivered by third-party flight training partners flying Cessna aircraft.
Pilot Training, offered as an Associate of Science degree and a certificate. The major is 25 units of aviation courses, including Private Pilot Laboratory I and II and ground courses toward the private, instrument and commercial knowledge tests. Ask the college how flight labs are delivered.
Associate of Science in Professional Aeronautics and a Certificate of Achievement in Professional Piloting. Miramar describes itself as an FAA-approved pilot ground school and does not fly its own aircraft; students fly with local schools and may request credit for FAA certificates earned.
The Miramar model is the clearest picture of how most community college pilot programs work: the college teaches the knowledge areas and grants the degree, and a flight school flies with you. That arrangement suits a student who wants an associate degree and a certificate at the same time without paying university tuition.
What it does not provide, on the current FAA list, is the 1,250-hour restricted ATP. If that reduction matters to you, compare the community college route against the five authorized institutions above, and ask any college whether it intends to apply for authority under 61.169.
For students living in the San Fernando Valley, Glendale Community College sits about 15 miles from Van Nuys Airport in a straight line, depending on traffic for the drive. For the cost side of either route, our flight school cost in Los Angeles guide lists every fee outside a program price.

Tuition and flight fees are listed separately because almost every institution bills them separately. Each figure is from the institution’s own published schedule, with its date.
| Item | Source And Date | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Community college enrollment fee | California statewide fee, published by college districts, 2025–26 | $46 per unit |
| Classroom cost of a 60-unit associate degree | Calculated: 60 units at $46, before books and fees | $2,760 |
| CSU systemwide undergraduate tuition | CSU schedule, 2026–27 academic year, over 6 units | $6,838 per year |
| CSU tuition, four years at the 2026–27 rate | Calculated; campus fees and future increases extra | $27,352 |
| SJSU Professional Flight estimated flight training | SJSU cost sheet, updated July 2025: private, instrument, commercial and medical | $62,000 |
| California Baptist University traditional tuition | CBU rates, 2026–27, 13 to 18 units | $21,132 per semester |
| California Baptist University flight lab fees | CBU rates, 2026–27: total of the eleven flight lab fees listed, private through multi-engine instructor | $121,698 |
| LA Flight School private pilot | Part 61, 40 hours, fixed price, October 2026 | $10,600 |
| LA Flight School zero to airline | Part 61: commercial, instrument, multi-engine and CFI, October 2026 | $82,000 |
Read the rows as building blocks rather than a ranking. A public university plus an affiliated flight school is two bills; a private university is tuition plus lab fees; a Part 61 school is one program price with no tuition and no degree. Flight costs depend on how often you fly and how many hours you need, and SJSU’s own sheet notes that flying less often can add 15 to 25 percent more hours. Outside every row: FAA medical, knowledge test fees, examiner fees, a headset and books. Financing options for flight training are covered in our flight training loans guide.
A degree and Part 61 training are not competing choices. The question is which hours you fly where, and whether you want the restricted ATP.
If you want 1,000 or 1,250 hours instead of 1,500, your commercial and instrument training must run through an authorized institution’s Part 141 school. If not, any degree pairs with Part 61 training.
A $229 lesson at Van Nuys tells you whether flying suits you before you commit to tuition. The hour logs as dual instruction and is credited if you enroll with us.
Career students usually take a first-class medical under 14 CFR Part 67 before paying tuition, since a medical problem found late is the most expensive surprise in training.
A private certificate earned at Van Nuys over a summer is yours under Part 61. Ask any college in writing how it treats a certificate earned before enrollment, since 141.77 limits credit for training inside its courses.
On the restricted ATP route, finish commercial and instrument inside the college structure. On the standard route, the instrument rating ($11,700) and commercial can be completed at Van Nuys alongside classes.
Most new commercial pilots build toward the airline minimum by instructing. The CFI certificate, the multi-engine rating ($5,100) and instruction hours can all be earned under Part 61 at Van Nuys.
Our flight instructor training in Los Angeles is where most degree holders return after graduation, because the hours between commercial and the airline minimum are flown under Part 61 regardless of which college you attended. For a route without a degree at all, see how to become a pilot in California.
Veterans should check GI Bill flight training rules before choosing, because benefit rules differ between degree programs and standalone flight schools. Non-US citizens need TSA approval under 49 CFR Part 1552 before flight training at a college or a school; our international student pilot guide covers the order of steps.

Whichever college you choose, one lesson at Van Nuys tells you whether this is the career for you. An instructor sits beside you, you fly the airplane, and the hour logs toward your certificate. Or book a free consultation and plan how Part 61 training fits around a degree.

On the FAA list revised 15 September 2026, five California institutions held authority under 14 CFR 61.169: California Aeronautical University, California Baptist University, San Diego Christian College, San Jose State University and William Jessup University. Qualifying bachelor's graduates may apply at 1,000 or 1,250 hours, depending on aviation credit hours, and qualifying associate graduates of California Aeronautical University or Jessup at 1,250. The FAA updates the list, so check the current version before you enroll.
Not on the current list. A 61.160(c) associate degree reduction to 1,250 hours requires the college itself to hold FAA authority, and no California community college appeared on the list revised 15 September 2026. A community college associate degree still has value: it is inexpensive at $46 per unit, it can include ground school toward the FAA knowledge tests, and its credits may transfer toward a bachelor's degree. The airline minimum on that route remains 1,500 hours under 14 CFR 61.159.
Partly. 14 CFR 61.160 requires the commercial certificate and instrument rating to be earned through a Part 141 pilot school associated with your authorized institution. Hours flown elsewhere still count toward the 1,000 or 1,250 total, so a private pilot certificate, multi-engine rating and flight instructor hours earned at a Part 61 school such as ours fit the plan. Ask your college in writing how it treats a private certificate earned before you enroll.
No. Some run their own Part 141 school, some contract with partner flight schools, and some teach ground school only. San Diego Miramar College, for example, states that it is an FAA-approved pilot ground school and does not provide training in actual aircraft. William Jessup University offers both Part 141 and Part 61 pathways through partner schools. If the restricted ATP matters to you, confirm which partner school is Part 141 and covered by the institution's training agreement.
Usually not. San Jose State states that flight training is paid directly to the affiliated flight school and is separate from tuition, and estimated $62,000 for private, instrument and commercial in July 2025. California Baptist University bills flight lab fees on top of tuition, totaling $121,698 across its eleven listed labs for 2026-27. Ask every college for a written estimate of tuition and flight costs together, at a realistic number of hours, before you compare it with a flight school.
Cal State LA offers a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Administration, and its program page describes airline administration, aviation safety and air traffic control rather than flight training. It does not appear on the FAA restricted ATP list. Students who want both can pair the degree with flight training at a school such as LA Flight School at Van Nuys, about 21 miles away in a straight line, at the standard 1,500-hour airline minimum.
Yes, but two approvals are separate. Any student who is not a US citizen or national must be cleared through the TSA Flight Training Security Program under 49 CFR Part 1552 before flight training begins, at a college or a flight school. A student visa for a degree program is handled by the college that admits you, so ask its international office directly. The FAA certificate itself requires English proficiency under 14 CFR 61.103(c), not citizenship.
A bachelor's degree runs on an academic calendar; California Baptist University describes its aviation majors as four-year programs of 124 units. An associate degree is at least 60 units. A Part 61 school sets no calendar, so the pace depends on how often you fly; the private pilot minimum is 40 hours under 14 CFR 61.109. Many students combine the two, flying at a Part 61 school during breaks and building instructor hours after graduation.
Regulations are from Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Program and fee details are from each institution’s own website, checked in October 2026.
The FAA list does not assign hours to each institution; the hours follow the degree type and credit hours under 61.160(b) to (d). Straight-line distances are measured from Van Nuys Airport. CBU flight lab total is the sum of the eleven flight lab fees in its 2026–27 schedule. LA Flight School prices current at 31 October 2026.
