SAFETY FIRST
Very safety and detail oriented. Pre-flight briefing explained everything there was. To my knowledge, this flight school is exceptional in their ability.

An airline cadet program is a pathway an airline runs to recruit pilots before they reach airline hiring minimums, usually with mentoring, a conditional or qualified job offer and a set route into its cockpit. Eight are compared below — SkyWest, Envoy, PSA, Piedmont, the American Airlines Cadet Academy, United Aviate, Delta Propel and Alaska’s Ascend — with what each airline’s own site says about eligibility, money and outside flight schools.
An airline pilot checks a tablet beside a jet, the job every cadet program is built to fill.
A cadet program signs you up with an airline years before you can legally fly for it. You still pay for and finish your own training; the airline adds structure, mentors and a defined door.
Every US airline first officer must hold an airline transport pilot certificate under 14 CFR 121.436, which means 1,500 hours under 14 CFR 61.159 or a reduced total under 61.160. Nobody reaches that number in flight school. Cadet programs exist to sign pilots up during the gap — at zero hours, at the private pilot certificate, or while they instruct — so that when the hours arrive, the pilot already has a place in line.
What a program actually gives you varies a great deal. At one end, the American Airlines Cadet Academy issues a Conditional Offer of Employment from a regional airline at the start of training. At the other, a cadet level may offer mentoring and recruiting events and nothing contractual. Some pay bonuses or cover the ATP Certification Training Program. Almost none pay for your flight training outright; United says plainly that Aviate participants remain responsible for the cost of their training.
Cadet programs sit alongside the ordinary route, not in place of it. Most regional airlines still hire pilots who simply apply at ATP minimums, as our guide to regional airlines in the US shows. A cadet program changes when you commit to an airline and what you get for it, not the hours you must fly.

Each row was read from the airline’s own careers site, or its training partner’s where the airline’s page would not load, in October 2026. Where a site is silent, the cell says so rather than guessing.
| Program | Airline | Who It Is For | Entry Requirement | What It Provides | Outside Training |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| American Airlines Cadet Academy | American, via Envoy, Piedmont or PSA | People starting from zero | Work eligibility, high school diploma or GED, able to obtain a first-class medical, background check, interviews | Offer to join plus a Conditional Offer of Employment from an American regional; lending through American Airlines Credit Union | Partner schools only |

Read the last column first if you train at a Part 61 school like ours. Two programs — Piedmont and PSA — say outright that any school is acceptable. United Aviate admits pilots who later work for one of its partners. The rest recruit from named universities and flight schools. That column is the reason this page exists, and it is covered in detail further down.
Programs change often. Bonuses, partner lists and hour thresholds on these sites moved several times during 2025 and 2026, and SkyWest became a United Aviate carrier on 11 December 2025. Treat every figure here as a starting point and confirm it on the program’s own page before you plan around it.
What each airline publishes about who it takes, what it pays for and where the program leads, summarized from its own pages in October 2026.
American’s zero-to-airline program. ATP Flight School’s Cadet Academy page lists the requirements as US work eligibility, a high school diploma or GED, the ability to obtain an FAA first-class medical, a background check, a passport and an admissions flight. After an application, an online assessment and interviews, successful candidates receive an offer to join and a Conditional Offer of Employment from Envoy, Piedmont or PSA. Cadets earn commercial and instructor certificates, instruct to the hiring minimums, then fly for the regional before a contractual flow to American. Financing is a lending product and Financial Wellness Program through American Airlines Credit Union. American’s July 2024 announcement named five partner schools, and ATP began training its first Cadet Academy class in September 2025.
Envoy, wholly owned by American, describes a direct career path to American. Its cadet page sets two levels. A Cadet needs a private pilot certificate, enrollment in an Envoy partner school and a successful HR interview, and receives mentoring. A Cadet Instructor needs a flight instructor certificate with instrument airplane ratings, a pass at Envoy’s Internal Review Board and a signed Letter of Commitment, and receives bonuses of up to $7,500 and employee travel privileges. To be hired as a first officer, Envoy’s minimum qualifications list a commercial certificate with multi-engine and instrument ratings, ATP-level hours, age 21 and a passed ATP written.
PSA’s December 2025 explainer says its program “is open to all colleges, universities and flight schools in the nation.” Applicants need a private pilot certificate before applying, must be able to hold a first-class medical and must be authorized to work in the US. Cadets get mentoring, access to events, the option to complete the first officer technical interview early, and possible tuition assistance or reimbursement that PSA says is not guaranteed to cover all costs. PSA describes eligibility for flow to American after PSA training and two years as a captain.
Piedmont’s program is built for pilots already building time. It asks for 500 total hours, no more than 200 hours short of ATP or restricted ATP minimums, a commercial multi-engine certificate with an instrument rating, a first-class medical and a clean record. It pays a $4,500 bonus and covers the ATP-CTP course and test, with hotel and ground transportation. After the course, cadets go into the next available new-hire class with no additional interview. Piedmont says cadets may build hours however and wherever they choose and do not need to be flight instructors.
SkyWest flies for United, Delta, American and Alaska. Its careers page lists the pathway benefits as enhanced seniority, a guaranteed final interview and access to pilot mentors, and says the program lets students remain at their own campus to finish training. The page names no eligibility criteria and no partner list on the version we read, so ask SkyWest’s recruiters directly. Since 11 December 2025 SkyWest has been a United Aviate carrier, and United says pilots may hold a SkyWest pathway place and an Aviate place at the same time.
Aviate is free to join, and United says participants pay for their own training. It requires age 18, a high school diploma or GED, an FAA medical originally issued as first or second class, the right to work in the US without sponsorship, and training at or employment with an Aviate university, flight school, Part 135 operator or United Express partner. Accepted pilots receive a Conditional Job Offer as a United first officer, build time at CommuteAir, GoJet, Mesa or SkyWest, and transition to United after logging the required pilot-in-command time; United lists 1,200 PIC hours with a participating carrier or Part 135 operator, and 1,200 or 1,600 captain hours by entry point for SkyWest pilots. The United Aviate Academy is United’s own ab initio school inside the same program.
Delta’s Collegiate and CFI path is for students at AABI-accredited US universities and graduates of select affiliate flight schools who are actively instructing, within 12 months of ATP or restricted ATP minimums, and hold a first-class medical. Successful candidates receive a Qualified Job Offer contingent on completing every part of Propel, onboard at Endeavor Air when they reach minimums, and serve at least 24 months as an Endeavor captain before moving to Delta. Separate paths exist for current Delta employees and for scholarship candidates nominated by Delta affiliate organizations.
Alaska and Horizon Air launched Ascend in March 2022 with Hillsboro Aero Academy in Oregon, offering a stipend, low-interest financial aid, mentoring and a confirmed job at Horizon once qualified. Hillsboro’s own career-paths page, updated 28 October 2026, says the program is no longer accepting new student applications and lists cadet stipends of up to $27,000 for those already enrolled. Alaska’s careers page did not load when we checked it, so confirm the current status there before you count on it. Horizon’s Pilot Development Program remains the other published route into Alaska.
You can train at an independent Part 61 school and apply to the programs that accept outside training. Here is exactly what each site says, and nothing more.
LA Flight School is a Part 61 school at Van Nuys Airport. We are not a partner school of any airline and no airline has an agreement with us. That matters for some programs and not at all for others, and the difference is written on the airlines’ own pages.
Piedmont says cadets are not tied to a partner school, may build hours however and wherever they choose, and need not be instructors. Entry is at 500 hours with a commercial multi-engine certificate and instrument rating.
PSA’s program is open to all colleges, universities and flight schools in the nation. A private pilot certificate is the entry ticket, so a Part 61 student can apply early.
Aviate requires training at or employment with a partner. A pilot trained elsewhere qualifies by working for an Aviate partner, for example as an instructor at a partner school or at a partner Part 135 operator.
The Cadet Academy, Envoy’s Cadet level and Delta Propel’s Collegiate and CFI path recruit from named schools. Their pages do not list independent Part 61 schools as eligible, so we do not suggest otherwise.
Envoy is the edge case worth knowing. Its Cadet level requires partner-school enrollment, but its Cadet Instructor level is described by certificates — a flight instructor certificate with instrument airplane ratings, an Internal Review Board and a Letter of Commitment — and the page we read did not say whether instructors from non-partner schools qualify. Ask Envoy’s pilot recruiters before you assume either way.
Every route still ends at the same regulatory gate. Whichever program you join, the first officer seat requires an ATP, and our page on the ATP certificate and the 1,500-hour rule explains the 1,500, 1,250, 1,000 and 750-hour routes. The 1,000 and 1,250-hour totals depend on an FAA-authorized degree program, so a Part 61 student reaches the airlines on the standard 1,500; whether a degree is worth it for you is covered in do you need a college degree to be a pilot.
The structural choice between schools is a separate question from the cadet one. Part 61 versus Part 141 sets out what changes in training, and the full professional route is on the how to become a commercial pilot guide.

The order a Part 61 student follows to stay eligible for the programs that accept outside training. The regulations set the hours; the programs set the timing.
Most programs on this page require a first-class medical or the ability to hold one. Get it before you spend serious money; our first-class medical guide covers the exam.
The private certificate is the entry requirement for PSA’s program and Envoy’s Cadet level. It takes at least 40 hours under 14 CFR 61.109.
A commercial certificate needs 250 hours under 14 CFR 61.129. Piedmont’s cadet entry asks for commercial multi-engine with an instrument rating.
Delta Propel requires active instructing, and Envoy’s higher level requires a CFI with instrument airplane ratings. See CFI jobs in Los Angeles for how the work is found.
PSA at the private certificate, Piedmont at 500 hours, Propel within 12 months of minimums. Track the threshold for each program you want.
Complete the ATP-CTP under 14 CFR 61.156, pass the ATP tests and join a regional new-hire class, through a program or by direct application.
At Van Nuys, our zero-to-airline program covers the commercial certificate, instrument rating, multi-engine rating and flight instructor certificate for $82,000, and the airline pilot school in Los Angeles page lays out what is included. Financing is available through Stratus Financial loans and interest-free in-house payment plans from $2,500 down; the flight school financing options page explains both. The multi-engine step is covered on multi-engine rating requirements.
A cadet program is a contract. These are the questions to put to a recruiter, with the answer in writing.
Is the offer conditional, and on what? United calls its offer a Conditional Job Offer and Delta calls its a Qualified Job Offer contingent on completing every part of Propel. Ask what ends it: a failed checkride, a lapsed medical, a missed hour threshold.
What do you owe the airline? PSA says accepting means fulfilling employment obligations at qualification milestones, and Envoy’s higher level involves a Letter of Commitment. Read what a commitment requires before you sign it.
Who pays for what? Most programs pay for none of the flight training. Bonuses, ATP-CTP coverage and tuition help are real but specific, and some are paid only at milestones.
Where will you be based? Regional bases sit mostly outside California. Base and seniority decide your life for years; the regional airlines list shows each airline’s bases, and the airline pilot salary guide shows what the seats pay.

No cadet program will take you without a medical and a private pilot certificate. A discovery flight is the first hour of that, logged toward the 40 hours in 14 CFR 61.109, and the free consultation is where we map your route against the programs above.

Airline cadet programs are pathways airlines run to recruit pilots before they reach airline hiring minimums. Depending on the program, cadets get mentoring, a conditional or qualified job offer, bonuses, help with the ATP Certification Training Program or a set route to a regional and then a major. You still earn every certificate and hour yourself; 14 CFR 121.436 requires an ATP for airline first officers. Programs compared on this page include the American Airlines Cadet Academy, United Aviate, Delta Propel and the SkyWest, Envoy, PSA and Piedmont programs.
Mostly no. United says Aviate participants remain responsible for the cost of their training, and the American Airlines Cadet Academy offers a lending product through American Airlines Credit Union rather than free training. Some programs help at specific points: Piedmont pays for the ATP-CTP course and test and a $4,500 bonus, Envoy advertises up to $7,500 in Cadet Instructor bonuses, and PSA mentions tuition assistance that it says is not guaranteed. Scholarships, such as American’s Elise Eberwein scholarship, are separate and competitive.
Yes, for some programs. Piedmont says cadets need no flight school affiliation, and PSA says its program is open to all colleges, universities and flight schools in the nation. United Aviate accepts pilots employed by an Aviate partner, so a pilot trained elsewhere can qualify through a partner job. The American Airlines Cadet Academy, Envoy’s Cadet level and Delta Propel’s Collegiate and CFI path recruit from named partner or affiliate schools. LA Flight School is not a partner of any airline.
SkyWest calls it the Pilot Pathway Program. Its careers page lists enhanced seniority, a guaranteed final interview and access to pilot mentors, and says students can remain at their own campus to finish training. The page we read in October 2026 did not list eligibility criteria or partner schools, so contact SkyWest recruiting for current terms. SkyWest became a United Aviate carrier on 11 December 2025, and United says pilots can be in a SkyWest pathway program and in Aviate at the same time.
For the Cadet level, Envoy asks for a private pilot certificate, enrollment in an Envoy partner school and a successful HR interview, and offers mentoring and promotional materials. The Cadet Instructor level needs a flight instructor certificate with instrument airplane ratings, a pass at Envoy’s Internal Review Board and a signed Letter of Commitment, and adds bonuses of up to $7,500 and employee travel privileges. To be hired as a first officer you still need ATP-level hours, age 21 and a passed ATP written.
500 total hours, and you must be no more than 200 hours away from ATP or restricted ATP minimums. Piedmont also asks for a commercial multi-engine certificate with an instrument rating, a first-class medical and no criminal record or FAA violations. Cadets receive a $4,500 bonus, and Piedmont pays for the ATP-CTP course and test with hotel and ground transportation. After the course, cadets enter the next new-hire class without another interview, and they may build hours anywhere.
It depends on how you build hours. Aviate is free to join and gives accepted pilots a Conditional Job Offer as a United first officer, then a route through CommuteAir, GoJet, Mesa or SkyWest, with a transition once you log the required captain time. The catch for independent students is eligibility: United requires training at or employment with an Aviate partner. If you plan to instruct or fly Part 135 for an Aviate partner anyway, joining when you become eligible fixes your place in its pipeline.
Timing and source. The American Airlines Cadet Academy recruits people at the start of training, through partner schools, and gives a Conditional Offer of Employment from Envoy, Piedmont or PSA. Delta Propel’s Collegiate and CFI path recruits later, from AABI-accredited universities and affiliate schools, when a candidate is instructing and within 12 months of ATP or restricted ATP minimums. Propel pilots onboard at Endeavor Air and serve at least 24 months as captain before moving to Delta.
Not to new students, according to Hillsboro Aero Academy, the Oregon school that runs it with Alaska and Horizon Air. Its career-paths page, updated 28 October 2026, says the program is no longer accepting new student applications, while enrolled cadets can receive stipends of up to $27,000. Alaska’s own careers page did not load when we checked, so confirm there. Horizon’s Pilot Development Program and direct applications to Horizon at ATP minimums remain published routes to Alaska.

Program details were read on the airlines’ and training partners’ sites between 28 and 31 October 2026 and change often; confirm on the program’s own page. LA Flight School is not a partner school of any airline and does not guarantee airline employment. Prices current at 31 October 2026.
