Flight school costs $10,900 for a private pilot certificate on our Standard programme. If you want more room in the schedule, the Comprehensive programme is $15,900 and carries 60 logged hours instead of 40. If you only want to fly in daylight with one passenger, sport pilot is $8,400 and you can stop there.

That is the answer, and giving it in the first two sentences is unusual enough to be worth explaining. Search this question and most results hand you a spread and an invitation to call. A spread is not information. It is a way of not answering while appearing to.

What a flight school costs comes down to two things: how many hours you actually fly, and what an hour costs where you train. We handle the first by fixing the hours inside a package, and the second by training in Los Angeles, where the weather cancels far fewer lessons than almost anywhere else in the country.

How Many Hours You End Up Flying

14 CFR 61.109 sets the private pilot minimum at 40 hours. The national average is nearer 60 or 70. A school quoting a total built on 40 is quoting a number most of its own students will not achieve, and the difference gets billed later.

How Often The Weather Lets You Fly

A cancelled lesson costs nothing and costs you money anyway, because skill decays while you wait. We counted a year of observations at Van Nuys and got 355 flyable days. That is why training here finishes faster than training somewhere with a real winter. The study is published in full.

Thirty-eight hours of single-engine aircraft in the Cessna, Piper or Diamond. Thirty hours of dual flight instruction. Two hours in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator. Three hours of ground school. Books and training materials. Forty hours logged when you are done.

What Is Not, And Why

Your FAA medical certificate comes from an aviation medical examiner. The FAA knowledge test is taken and paid for at an approved testing centre. Your checkride is conducted by a Designated Pilot Examiner who is an independent contractor and is paid directly. None of the three is a flight school service and no school includes them.

What We Will Not Do

Publish a padded list of third-party costs to make our own number look thorough. We do not set those prices, we do not take a cut, and a shopping list dressed up as a budget is a sales device rather than an answer.

Cadence

Flying Weekly Is Cheaper Than Flying Fortnightly

This is the single most useful thing anyone will tell you about the cost of flight school, and it has nothing to do with price lists.

Skills decay. A student who flies twice a week starts each lesson roughly where the last one ended. A student who flies once a fortnight spends the first half of every lesson recovering ground they already paid to cover, and a student who flies once a month is buying the same lesson over and over.

Two people can enrol on the same day, on the same programme, at the same price, and finish four months apart. The one who finished first did not have more talent. They had a diary.

So before you compare schools on price, look honestly at how often you can get to an airport. If the answer is once a fortnight, take the Comprehensive programme at $15,900 with its 60 logged hours rather than the Standard at $10,900, and be glad you did. How long it takes to become a pilot works the timeline through properly.

The other half of cadence is weather, and that is not something willpower fixes. A student in the Pacific Northwest can want to fly twice a week and be rained off half of those slots between November and March. In the San Fernando Valley the constraint is almost never the sky. It is whether you can get to Balboa Boulevard on a Tuesday evening.

The Redbird MCX is FAA-approved, fully enclosed and it moves. Procedures, instrument scan, radio work and emergencies transfer straight to the aircraft, and the weather never cancels it.

Two simulator hours are inside the $10,900 Standard programme and five inside the $15,900 Comprehensive. Booked on its own a session is $189.

Your Instructor

You Are Mostly Paying For A Person, Not An Aeroplane

The largest single component of any flight school price is instruction, and it is the part people compare least. Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight you make together.

There are 11 of them, which matters more for your budget than it sounds: when one instructor is unavailable, your training does not pause, and a paused student is an expensive student.

You are matched to an instructor when you enrol and you can change if the fit is wrong, at no cost. The debrief after the flight is the part students remember, and it is the thing our reviews mention most.
