The Answer

Flight Training Costs $10,900 For The Certificate Most People Want

Flight training costs $10,900 for a private pilot certificate on the Standard programme at Van Nuys. An instrument rating afterwards is $11,700. A multi-engine add-on is $5,100. Sport pilot, if that is all you need, is $8,400.

Every one of those is a fixed package rather than a starting point. The hours, the dual instruction, the simulator time, the ground school and the books are counted and included, and the figure does not change while you train.

The reason to say this loudly is that most pages answering this question will not give you a number at all. They will explain that it depends. It does depend, and you can still be told what it costs, which is what the rest of this page does.

If you want the complete fee schedule rather than the headline, pilot training cost lists every price we publish on one table. If you are comparing schools generally, how much flight school costs is the shorter version of this page.

The Piper Seminole and the Cirrus SR22 Turbo do not carry an hourly figure. If you want twin time, the route is the $5,100 multi-engine add-on; if you want the Cirrus, it is the $22,500 Premium programme. Financing starts from $2,500 down.

Where It Goes

What You Are Actually Paying For In An Hour Of Flight Training

Three things, and only one of them is the aeroplane.

01

The Aircraft And Its Fuel

Enrolled students fly single-engine aircraft at $179 an hour wet. Wet means the fuel is in the number. Behind that figure sit insurance, hangarage, avionics databases and the 100-hour inspections FAR 91.409(b) requires on any aircraft used for instruction for hire — which is why a training aeroplane costs more to operate than the same airframe in a private owner's hangar.

02

The Instruction And The Briefing

Instructional hours sit inside the programme price, never bolted onto the $179. The brief before the flight and the debrief after it are where most of the learning happens, and both are instruction whether or not the propeller is turning. A school that bills only for engine time is quietly telling you how much briefing it intends to do.

03

The Ground And The Simulator

Ground school is 3 hours on the Standard and Premium programmes and 10 on the Comprehensive. Redbird MCX simulator time is 2 hours on Standard and Premium and 5 on Comprehensive. A procedure learned in the simulator is a procedure you are not paying an aeroplane to teach you.

The Real Lever

The Cheapest Hour Is The One You Do Not Have To Fly Twice

Every serious saving in flight training comes from the same place: not repeating yourself. Not from an hourly figure, not from haggling, and not from finding a cheaper aeroplane.

14 CFR 61.109 sets the private pilot minimum at 40 hours. Most people fly nearer 60 or 70. The gap is almost entirely made up of hours spent recovering skill that decayed between lessons, and it is the single largest variable cost in the whole exercise.

Two things close it. Flying often enough that each lesson builds on the last, and arriving at the aircraft already knowing what you are about to do. The first is a diary problem. The second is free, and almost nobody does enough of it.

The third thing is weather, and Los Angeles hands it to you. Our own count of a year of observations at Van Nuys gives 355 flyable days against 277 at Hillsboro, Oregon. Fewer cancellations means less decay, and less decay means fewer hours. The flyable days study shows the method and every airport we measured.

This is also the argument for the Comprehensive programme at $15,900 over the Standard at $10,900. It is not a better aeroplane or a better instructor. It is 20 more logged hours bought in advance, at a price fixed on the day you enrol.

Which of the two you should buy is a question about your calendar rather than your ambition. Somebody who can fly Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings without fail should take the Standard programme and will very likely finish inside it. Somebody whose work travels should take the Comprehensive, and will spend less than they would have spent finishing the Standard the hard way.

Not Included

Three Costs No Flight School Can Put In Its Price

They are real, they are required, and none of them is ours to charge for.

1

The FAA Medical

Issued by an FAA-designated aviation medical examiner, and needed before you fly solo. We will point you at one and tell you how to prepare for the appointment. Sport pilot is the exception under FAR 61.23, where a valid US driver licence can stand in.

2

The Knowledge Test

The FAA written is taken and paid for at an approved testing centre. The ground school inside your programme is what prepares you for it, and our written exam guide covers what it asks.

3

The Examiner

A Designated Pilot Examiner conducts your checkride under FAA authority as an independent contractor, and is paid directly on the day. No school anywhere includes this in tuition.

Redbird MCX

The Hour That Costs $189 And Saves More Than That

The Redbird MCX is FAA-approved, fully enclosed and it moves. Emergencies, instrument scan, radio work and procedures all transfer to the aircraft, and it is never cancelled for weather.

Simulator hours are already inside every private pilot programme. Booked separately a session is $189, and it is the least expensive way to arrive at a lesson already knowing the sequence.

Your Instructor

The Largest Line In Your Training Cost Is A Person

Instruction, not aircraft, is the biggest component of what flight training costs, and it is the part almost nobody compares. Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight you make together.

There are 11 of them. That is a scheduling fact with a financial consequence: when one instructor is away, your training continues, and training that stalls is training that gets repeated.

You are matched to an instructor at enrolment and can change without cost if the fit is wrong. Nobody here takes that personally, and a student who is quietly not learning is more expensive than an awkward conversation.

It is worth knowing what that person is doing while you fly. They are watching the aircraft, the airspace and you, in that order, and deciding which of your errors to let run because the lesson is in the recovery. That judgement is the thing you cannot buy cheaply, and it is the reason two schools quoting the same hours can produce very different bills.

FAQ

Flight Training Cost Questions, Answered

Flight training costs $10,900 for a private pilot certificate on the Standard programme at LA Flight School, Van Nuys Airport. An instrument rating is $11,700, a multi-engine add-on is $5,100 and a sport pilot certificate is $8,400. Each is a fixed package with the aircraft hours, dual instruction, simulator time, ground school and books included.

Enrolled students fly single-engine aircraft at $179 an hour wet, which covers the aircraft and its fuel. Instructional hours sit inside the programme price rather than being added to that figure, so a package total is not an hourly rate multiplied by an optimistic number of hours.

Because an aircraft used for instruction for hire needs 100-hour inspections under FAR 91.409(b), insurance, hangarage and current avionics databases, and because a certificated instructor is in the aircraft with you for every hour. The $10,900 Standard programme covers 38 hours of aircraft, 30 hours of dual instruction, 2 simulator hours and 3 hours of ground school.

On our programmes: aircraft hours, dual flight instruction, Redbird MCX full-motion simulator time, ground school and all books and training materials. The Standard private pilot programme at $10,900 builds to 40 logged hours; the $15,900 Comprehensive builds to 60.

Yes. 14 CFR 61.109 sets the private pilot minimum at 40 hours but the national average is closer to 60 or 70, and most of that gap is skill lost between lessons and re-bought. Flying twice a week rather than twice a month is the single largest saving available to a student pilot.

It reduces the hours you need in the aircraft, which is where the money is. A Redbird MCX session is $189, it is FAA-approved and full-motion, and procedures learned in it transfer straight to the aeroplane. Two simulator hours are already inside the $10,900 Standard programme and five inside the $15,900 Comprehensive.

Your FAA medical certificate from an aviation medical examiner, the FAA knowledge test taken at an approved testing centre, and the Designated Pilot Examiner who conducts your checkride and is paid directly on the day. None of the three is a flight school service. Books and training materials are included in every programme we sell.

Usually, because of weather rather than labour. Our count of twelve months of observations puts Van Nuys at 355 flyable days a year against 277 at Hillsboro, Oregon and 278 at Everett, Washington. Fewer weather cancellations means fewer repeated lessons, and repeated lessons are what inflate a training bill.

Yes. Programmes start from $2,500 down with monthly payment plans available, through aviation lenders and through in-house plans. Because the programme price is fixed at enrolment, the monthly figure is calculated against a number that will not move while you train.

Book the free consultation and bring your diary. You will leave with a written plan, one price and a realistic finish date based on how often you can actually fly. A $229 discovery flight is the other useful first step, and the whole amount comes off any programme if you enrol within 24 hours.
