An Hour In The Left Seat Over Your Own City

What Happens On The Day — Start To Certificate

Plan on about two hours door to door, of which roughly an hour is in the air.

Arrive And Park

Come to Suite 108A at 7900 Balboa Blvd about fifteen minutes early. Parking is free in the lot out front and there is always space, so you do not need the buffer you would build in for the parking structure at Hollywood Burbank. Bring photo ID and sunglasses. The ramp runs warmer than the shaded side of Magnolia Boulevard.

Briefing And Picking The Route

Twenty minutes with your instructor covering how the wing works, what each control does, and who is flying at which point. You choose where you go here. Over your own street in Burbank, out along the Verdugo ridge, or west to the coast and back down over Malibu, and your instructor will tell you honestly what the airspace allows that day.

The Walk-Around

You preflight the airplane with the instructor. Fuel, oil, control surfaces, tires, lights, the lot. It is not ceremony, and it is not for show. You are inspecting the specific aircraft you are about to fly, and it is the first skill every student pilot is taught to do properly and never skip.

You Fly It

You taxi out, and once the takeoff roll is finished the airplane is yours. Climbing turns out of the Van Nuys pattern, level off, then the route you picked. Your instructor works the radios so your attention stays on flying, and takes the controls only for the landing unless you want to try that too.

Logbook And Debrief

Back on the ramp we shut down, debrief what you did, and log the time, because it counts toward a license whether or not you ever come back. If you decide within twenty-four hours that you want to keep going, 100% of what you paid today comes off the cost of your training.

Getting Here From Burbank

20 Minutes And 12 Miles From Burbank

There is a Burbank Boulevard, and it runs from your city straight across the Valley to within two miles of the airport, which makes it easy to remember. Take it west past North Hollywood and Valley Village, cross Coldwater Canyon, Van Nuys Boulevard and Sepulveda, and at Balboa turn right. Two miles up, past Victory and Vanowen and Sherman Way, and 7900 Balboa Blvd is on the right. About twenty minutes on a normal day.

Weekend mornings, which is when most discovery flights are booked, the run is quiet and closer to fifteen minutes. The one to avoid is a weekday between four and six, when Victory and Burbank Boulevard both back up at Van Nuys Boulevard. Parking at 7900 Balboa is free and directly outside Suite 108A, so once you are here there is nothing else to sort out.

Which Airplane You Go Up In

Most first flights happen in the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Piper Warrior or the Diamond DA20. The Diamond is the one to ask for if the view is the point, because the bubble canopy gives you almost nothing between you and Burbank below. The Warrior is the roomiest of the three and the easiest choice if there are two of you and one is tall.

If you want the flight to feel like an occasion, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo has leather seats, a full glass cockpit and a whole-airframe parachute, and is $499 for sixty minutes for two. There is also a Piper Seminole twin, and a multi-engine discovery flight in it is $499 for sixty minutes, $699 for ninety and $899 for two hours. That one is usually booked by people who already fly.

Discovery Flight FAQ

Because there is nothing to fly there. Hollywood Burbank handles scheduled airline traffic and business jets, and it has no trainer fleet on the field. Discovery flights need a small aircraft, a dual-control cockpit and an airport where a beginner can fly the pattern, and that is Van Nuys. It is twelve miles west of you and the drive is about twenty minutes.

For one person it is $229 for sixty minutes, $299 for ninety and $399 for two hours. For two people it is $299, $399 and $499. The Cirrus SR22 Turbo for two is $499, $699 and $949, and an hour in the Redbird MCX simulator is $189. There are no extra fees on top of those numbers.

Over your street in Burbank, almost always. The studio lots sit right underneath Burbank's Class C airspace, so how low and how directly we can go over them depends on what Burbank approach can give us that day. Tell your instructor what you want to see during the briefing and they will get you as close as the airspace honestly allows.

You fly it. You will have the controls for most of the flight, including the climb, the turns and the cruise, with an instructor beside you on a second set of controls the whole time. They handle the radios and normally the landing. If you want to try the landing as well, say so before you go.
