A short, concentrated add-on in the Piper Seminole for pilots who already hold at least a private certificate, flown out of Van Nuys and priced at $5,100.
If you already fly, you know what this is: a rating, not a course. $5,100 for the multi-engine add-on in a Piper Seminole, flown out of Van Nuys. The Seminole has counter-rotating propellers, so there is no critical engine to memorize, which removes one distraction and leaves you free to concentrate on the things that actually matter. Drag management, blue line discipline, and doing the correct thing before you have finished diagnosing anything.
Burbank pilots come to us with mixed backgrounds. Some did their private at Van Nuys years ago and drifted. Some fly out of Whiteman and want a twin without driving to Camarillo. Some work around the corporate operations at Hollywood Burbank, have watched turbine crews all week, and want the rating that gets them into that conversation. Whichever it is, the rating is the same and the honest prerequisite is currency, not enthusiasm.
One thing worth knowing before you book: the Valley in summer is an excellent classroom for exactly this. Van Nuys sits at roughly 800 feet and a July afternoon will show you what a light twin's single-engine climb rate really looks like when density altitude has finished with it. If your mental model of engine-out performance came from a book at sea level in March, this will recalibrate it usefully.

Five stages, run consecutively where possible, because this rating rewards concentration and punishes gaps.
Fuel and electrical systems, the constant-speed props, feathering and unfeathering, accumulators, and the performance charts you will be asked to defend on the oral. Vmc, Vyse, Vsse and Vxse, where each of them comes from, and why Vmc is a number that moves with configuration, weight, altitude and bank angle rather than sitting still on a placard.
Taxi, run-up, takeoff, cruise, descent and landing on two engines until the airplane stops feeling foreign. Weight and balance on a Seminole is less forgiving than what you are used to, the sight picture on the flare is different, and the airplane wants speed control on final in a way most singles will happily let you get away with ignoring.
The core of the rating. Failures on the ground, after rotation, in the climb and in cruise. Identify, verify, feather. Drag reduction in the right order. The Vmc demonstration flown properly, at altitude, recognizing the onset rather than chasing the number. Then the same failures repeated until the first three actions happen without you consciously assembling them.
Approaches and go-arounds on one engine, including the point in the process where a single-engine go-around stops being a viable option and you commit to landing. If you hold an instrument rating and want to use it in the twin, this is also where the instrument approaches on one engine get flown to standard.
Oral, then the flight. The oral leans hard on systems and performance, which is where unprepared applicants come apart. We run a mock oral before we sign you off, and we do not send anyone to the examiner to find out whether they are ready. Checkrides usually happen at Van Nuys, so the environment is the one you trained in.

From Burbank, the quick version is Victory Boulevard west to Balboa, then right and north past Vanowen, Sherman Way and Saticoy. Twelve miles, about twenty minutes, no freeway needed. From north Burbank and the Empire area, the 5 to the 170 north and then west on Roscoe Boulevard is usually faster, and drops you at the top of the field with a right turn onto Balboa.
Because this rating works best flown on consecutive days, the drive is worth thinking about properly: you may be doing it every morning for a week or two. Early slots are the best of both worlds, quiet roads and smooth air before the Valley heats up and the density altitude starts eating your single-engine climb. Parking is free outside Suite 108A at 7900 Balboa Blvd, right by the ramp.
Pick your aircraft, pick a date and time, and you are on the schedule. You fly the airplane yourself with an FAA-certified instructor beside you — and every flight is 100% credited toward training if you enroll within 24 hours.
Full-motion simulator with an instructor. No weight limit, no medical needed.

Book Now →The rating is flown in the Piper Seminole, which rents at $649 an hour if you want it afterwards for currency or for taking the family somewhere with a real load. It is the standard light twin trainer for a reason: counter-rotating props, honest handling, and engine-out behavior that teaches you the right habits rather than terrifying you out of them.
If you are around the school anyway, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo is also $649 an hour and worth a checkout if you have never managed a glass panel and a parachute-equipped airframe. The Piper Arrow II is $349 for complex time, the Diamond DA20 is $329, and the Cessna 162 and Piper Warrior are $269. The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is available for procedure work and instrument currency.

Engine-out training happens where there is room, which shapes where you spend your time.
The large deliberately empty floodplain immediately southeast of the field. It is the only substantial open ground close to Van Nuys, which is precisely why every instructor here has an opinion about it.
The ridge behind Burbank, and a useful reference for what single-engine service ceiling means in practice. On a hot afternoon the arithmetic of clearing terrain on one engine stops being theoretical fairly quickly.
The small field at Pacoima, northeast of Van Nuys, tucked under the hills. Familiar to a lot of Valley pilots as a home base, and a handy alternate to have in your head when you are working the airplane hard.
Not a thing you can see, but a thing you will feel. The lateral limits sit close enough east of Van Nuys that knowing where the shelf steps down changes how you plan a working area on a busy day.
$5,100 for the add-on, flown in the Piper Seminole. If you want the airplane afterwards for currency or travel, it rents at $649 an hour. Financing is available through Stratus Financial or an in-house payment plan if you would rather not put the whole rating on a card in one go.
Most current, prepared pilots get through it in a handful of consecutive days, and a week is a realistic block to set aside once you allow for weather and examiner availability. Turnout matters more than talent here. If you have not flown in six months, spend an hour getting current in a single first rather than paying twin rates to knock the rust off.
No. The prerequisite is at least a private pilot certificate. But if you do hold an instrument rating and want to exercise it in a twin, you have to demonstrate instrument proficiency in the multi during the checkride. Skip that and the rating comes back limited to VFR, which is a limitation people regret more often than they expect.
Suite 108A at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys, on the west side of the field. From Burbank it is Victory Boulevard west then north on Balboa, roughly twenty minutes. Parking is free and directly outside the door. If you are flying yourself in, tell us in advance and we will sort out where to put your aircraft.
Yes. A multi-engine discovery flight is $499 for sixty minutes, $699 for ninety and $899 for two hours, and it is a fair way to see whether the airplane and the instructor suit you. The time is loggable, and if you enroll in the rating within twenty-four hours the full amount comes off the $5,100.
