A First Flight From The Far End Of Victory Boulevard

A discovery flight is not a sightseeing tour with a pilot narrating. You take the left seat, an FAA-certified instructor takes the right, and once the wheels are up the aircraft is yours to fly: turns, climbs, straight and level, the lot. The instructor works the radio and is on the controls the moment it matters. We have flown more than 2,000 of these safely, and our rating on Google is a 5.0.

From North Hollywood it is a fifteen-minute drive and roughly two and a half hours door to door for a sixty-minute flight. An hour is enough to get west over the Sepulveda Basin, turn back and look down at your own street from a few thousand feet. Ninety minutes reaches the coast at Malibu. Two hours puts the Channel Islands within range on a clear day, which is a very different afternoon.

Prices start at $229 for sixty minutes for one person, $299 for ninety and $399 for two hours. For two people it is $299, $399 and $499, so the second seat costs far less than a second flight. An hour in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is $189 if the weather closes in or you would rather start on the ground. Every minute flown in the aircraft is loggable toward a license.

How The Day Actually Goes — Start To Certificate

Allow about two and a half hours from parking the car to walking back to it.

Park And Check In

Pull into the free lot in front of 7900 Balboa Boulevard and find Suite 108A. Bring a photo ID and sunglasses and nothing else. Arrive fifteen minutes early if you can, because Van Nuys is worth watching for a few minutes before you fly out of it.

The Briefing

Twenty minutes at a table with your instructor: what the controls do, what the flight looks like drawn on a chart, where you are going and who is talking on the radio. You will fly better for having had it, and it is the point at which most first-timers stop being nervous.

The Walk-Around

You do the preflight inspection with the instructor. Fuel, oil, control surfaces, tires, the whole check. It takes about ten minutes and it is the part that makes clear this is a hands-on business rather than a ride you are being sold a ticket for.

You Fly It

You are on the controls from shortly after takeoff. The instructor handles the departure out of the Class D and then hands over. Most people are surprised by how stable the aircraft feels and how quickly the horizon starts to make sense once they stop fighting it.

Logbook And What Happens Next

You leave with a logbook and the flight entered in it, and that time counts toward a license if you carry on. If you enroll in a training program within 24 hours, 100% of what you paid for the flight is credited toward it. No decision is needed on the day.

Getting Here From North Hollywood

15 Minutes And 8 Miles From North Hollywood

From the Arts District, take Victory Boulevard west and stay on it through Valley Glen, Van Nuys and Lake Balboa to Balboa Boulevard, then north for a mile and a half. 7900 Balboa is on the right between Saticoy and Roscoe. Eight miles, about fifteen minutes. If you are nearer Sherman Way or Vanowen, take either of those west instead and you will save yourself a run of lights.

Parking is free and on site, which matters when you are bringing a carload of people who want to watch the takeoff. Give yourself a buffer at each end. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon on Victory are easy; between five and six the stretch through Panorama City slows badly. Weekend mornings are both the quietest drive of the week and the smoothest air over the Valley.

Which Aircraft You Will Fly

Most discovery flights go out in the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Piper Warrior or the Diamond DA20. Ask for the DA20 if the view is the whole point, because the canopy is bubble glass and you can see straight down past your shoulder. Whichever you fly, it is the same aircraft a student pilot uses on lesson one, which is rather the idea.

Two upgrades exist if you want them. The Luxury Cirrus For Two is the SR22 Turbo with a glass cockpit and a whole-airframe parachute, at $499 for sixty minutes, $699 for ninety and $949 for two hours. The Multi-Engine Discovery Flight in the Piper Seminole is $499, $699 and $899, and two engines make it a genuinely different aircraft to handle.

What North Hollywood Looks Like From Up There

The neighborhood rearranges itself completely once you are above it.

The NoHo Arts District

Lankershim and Magnolia crossing in the middle of it, with the theater blocks and the Television Academy plaza just off the corner. It is compact from the air, roughly a square mile, which is not how it feels when you are parking for a show.

Universal Studios

The backlot, the tram route and the park sit just over the 101 from you. From a few thousand feet the false streets look precisely like what they are, and seeing that for the first time is worth the flight on its own.

Valley Plaza Park

A wide green rectangle off Vanowen with ball fields and the recreation center. It is one of the few large open spaces in this part of the Valley, so it shows up from a long way out.

Two crossing runways just northeast of North Hollywood, usually with an airliner somewhere on the approach. Van Nuys and Burbank sit surprisingly close together, and watching the two fields work is part of the fun of the flight.

Discovery Flight FAQ

You fly it. Hands on the controls from shortly after takeoff, with an FAA-certified instructor next to you on a dual set of controls. They handle the radio and the departure and can take over instantly, but the flying is yours. The time is loggable and counts toward a license if you go on.

Sixty minutes is $229 for one person or $299 for two, ninety minutes is $299 and $399, and two hours is $399 and $499. An hour on the Redbird simulator is $189. If you enroll in a training program within 24 hours of the flight, 100% of the flight cost is credited toward your training.

It is the most common reason people book one. Buy it and let them choose the date, since we are open 9 AM to 9 PM seven days a week and it fits around a show schedule or a shift. If the person is nervous about the whole idea, the $189 Redbird simulator hour is a gentler way in.

About three hours in total: fifteen minutes each way on Victory Boulevard, and roughly two and a half hours at the airport for a sixty-minute flight. Parking at 7900 Balboa is free and on site, so none of that time goes on circling for a space the way it would around Lankershim.

We do not fly discovery flights in weather that would ruin them. If the morning marine layer has not burned off, we move you to another slot at no cost, or put the hour on the Redbird MCX simulator at $189 instead. Late spring mornings are the most likely to slip, and afternoons almost always clear.
