A First Flight, Eight Miles From Home

A discovery flight is not a tour with a pilot narrating. You sit in the left seat, an FAA-certified instructor sits in the right, and after the takeoff roll the airplane is yours - turns, climbs, straight and level, the whole thing. The instructor is on the controls when it matters and otherwise leaves you to it. From Studio City it is a fifteen-minute drive and roughly two and a half hours door to door for a sixty-minute flight.

The obvious route out of Van Nuys is southeast over the Sepulveda Basin and down the line of the 101 until Ventura Boulevard is under the nose. Radford's sound stages, the river channel, Fryman Canyon, Mulholland along the ridge, and then the coast if the visibility is good. Most people who live in Studio City spend the first ten minutes trying to find their own roof, and usually do.

One person is $229 for sixty minutes, $299 for ninety and $399 for two hours; two people fly the same three lengths for $299, $399 and $499. The Cirrus SR22 Turbo with its glass cockpit is $499 for two for an hour. There is also a $189 hour in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator. The flight time is loggable toward a license, and if you enroll within 24 hours the whole cost is credited to your training.

What Happens On The Day — Start To Certificate

About two and a half hours from pulling into the lot to walking back out to the car.

Arrive And Park

Come to Suite 108A at 7900 Balboa Boulevard about fifteen minutes before your slot. Parking is free in the lot out front. Bring photo ID, wear sunglasses, and leave the heavy jacket at home - the ramp at Van Nuys is warmer than the shady side of Ventura Boulevard.

Briefing

Twenty minutes with your instructor: how the wing works, what each control does, what you will do in the air and what the instructor will do. You choose the route here, so if you want to fly over your own street, or over Radford, or out to the coast, say so at this point.

Preflight Walk-Around

You walk the airplane with the instructor - fuel, oil, control surfaces, tires, lights. It is not ceremony. You are checking the aircraft you are about to fly, and it is the first thing every student pilot learns to do properly.

You Fly

You taxi out, and once the takeoff roll is done you have the controls. Climbing turns out of the Van Nuys pattern, level off, then the route you picked, usually southeast toward Studio City and the hills. The instructor works the radios so you can concentrate on flying the airplane.

Logbook And What Next

Back on the ground your time goes in a logbook and counts toward a license, and you get a straight answer about what training would actually look like for you. Enroll within 24 hours and 100 percent of what you paid comes off the program. If you would rather go away and think, that is fine too.

Getting Here From Studio City

15 Minutes And 8 Miles From Studio City

Take the 101 west out of Studio City and come off at Balboa Boulevard, then head north. It is about four and a half miles up Balboa, past Victory, Sherman Way and Saticoy, and 7900 Balboa Boulevard is on the right shortly before Roscoe with Van Nuys Airport behind it. Door to door it is around fifteen minutes from Ventura and Laurel Canyon.

For a weekend morning flight the drive is genuinely easy, since the 101 west only clogs on weekday afternoons. If you are coming from the Tujunga Village end, Whitsett north to Burbank Boulevard and then west to Balboa avoids the freeway altogether. Park free in the lot in front of the building and check in at Suite 108A.

Which Airplane You Will Fly

Most discovery flights go out in the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Diamond DA20 or the Piper Warrior. Ask for the DA20 if the view is the point - the canopy is bubble glass and you can see straight down over the hills. Whichever you fly, it is the same airplane a student pilot uses on lesson one, which is rather the idea.

If you want the flight to feel like an occasion, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo is the one to book: full glass cockpit, leather, air conditioning and a whole-airframe parachute, at $499 for two people for an hour. There is also a Multi-Engine Discovery Flight in the Piper Seminole from $499 for an hour, which is a rarer thing to be handed the controls of. The Redbird MCX simulator sits in the building at $189 an hour.

Discovery Flight FAQ

Yes. After the takeoff roll the instructor hands you the controls and you fly the airplane - climbs, turns, level flight, following a road you already know from the ground. The instructor keeps a hand nearby, works the radios and takes the landing. No experience is needed, and we have flown more than 2,000 of these safely.

From $229 for one person for sixty minutes, or $299 for two people. The time is loggable and counts toward a license, and if you enroll in training within 24 hours we credit 100 percent of the flight cost against the program. The worst case is a very good hour and the best case is a free head start.

It is one of the better ones, particularly around here where most people already own everything. We fly seven days a week from 9 AM to 9 PM, so whoever you give it to can pick a time that fits their schedule. Two-person flights start at $299 for an hour if you want to go along.

Budget about two and a half hours in total for a sixty-minute flight: fifteen minutes each way on the 101, twenty minutes of briefing, the walk-around, the flight itself, then logbook time afterwards. Arrive fifteen minutes before your slot. Parking is free in the lot in front of 7900 Balboa Boulevard.

Van Nuys gets a marine layer on some mornings, mostly in May and June, and it usually burns off by late morning. If your slot is not flyable we rebook it at no cost, or you can move into the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator for $189 an hour. Nobody flies in conditions the instructor is not happy with.
