Why June Mornings Scrub Flight Lessons In Los Angeles

In June at Van Nuys, only 40% of 7am weather observations met flight training minima. By 11am that figure was 93%. From 1pm onwards it was 97 to 100%. If your lesson keeps getting scrubbed at breakfast in early summer, that is not bad luck and it is not your instructor being cautious. It is the marine layer, it is predictable, and it is entirely avoidable.

Those numbers come from our own research, not from a general weather site. We pulled twelve months of NOAA ASOS observations at Van Nuys Airport — 1 August 2025 to 1 August 2026 — and scored every observation against a 3,000-foot ceiling and 5 statute miles of visibility, which is the standard most schools apply to early dual instruction and student solo work. The headline number first

Van Nuys recorded 355 flyable days in that twelve-month period against training minima. Against basic VFR minimums of 1,000 feet and 3 statute miles, it was 363 days.

That is one of the best figures in the country, and it is the reason people fly here rather than somewhere with a nicer skyline. For comparison, over the same period and using the same method: Burbank 356, Phoenix Deer Valley 356, Kissimmee in Florida 355, Santa Monica 343, Whiteman 334, Torrance 332, Hillsboro in Oregon 277 and Everett in Washington 278.

So Los Angeles flying weather is excellent. And yet student pilots here lose lessons in June. Both things are true at once, and the reason is that a day-count hides what happens inside a day.

What the marine layer actually is

The Pacific off Southern California is cold. Cold water chills the air immediately above it, and cool moist air is denser than the warm air sitting on top of it. That inversion traps a shallow deck of stratus cloud — often only 500 to 1,500 feet thick — right at the surface of the ocean.

At night, with no sun heating the land, the pressure gradient reverses and that deck pushes inland. It comes through the coastal gaps and up the basin, and by dawn it is sitting over Santa Monica, over the South Bay, and frequently over the San Fernando Valley too.

Then the sun comes up. Land heats far faster than water, the ground warms the air beneath the deck, the cloud base lifts, and the layer erodes from the inland edge back toward the coast. Pilots call it burn-off. It happens on an almost clockwork schedule between May and September, which is why the local names for it — May Grey, June Gloom — are calendar-based rather than weather-based.

The important consequence for a student pilot: this is a time-of-day phenomenon, not a day phenomenon. The 7am observation and the 1pm observation on the same date are frequently two completely different flying days.

The June numbers, hour by hour

Here is what our Van Nuys data showed for June, scored against the 3,000-foot and 5-statute-mile training standard:

  • 7am — 40% of observations met training minima
  • 11am — 93%
  • 1pm and later — 97% to 100%

Read that as a student and it says something blunt. A June lesson booked for seven in the morning is closer to a coin toss than a plan. The same lesson booked for two in the afternoon is, statistically, going to happen.

This is the gap between 355 flyable days and a student's lived experience. The day was flyable. You just booked the wrong end of it.

Why inland beats coastal, with a number

Because the layer erodes from the inland edge, distance from the water buys you time. Van Nuys sits about twenty miles inland with the Santa Monica Mountains between it and the ocean, and that geography shows up directly in the data.

In August, at 7am, Van Nuys met training minima 84% of the time. Santa Monica, on the coast, managed 48%.

Same city. Same morning. Same air mass. One field is flyable five mornings in six and the other is flyable roughly one morning in two. Across a full year that difference is 355 flyable days against 343, but the morning gap is where a student actually feels it — because early lessons are when most people can fit training around a job.

If you are choosing between airports for training and you intend to fly before work, this is the most important number in this article.

The thing that catches people out: it is not always low enough to cancel

A marine layer at 900 feet is an easy decision. Nobody is going flying.

The awkward one is a deck at 2,200 feet with four miles of visibility in haze. That is legal VFR. It is also a bad morning to be practising steep turns and stalls with fifteen hours in your logbook, because the manoeuvring altitudes you need are inside the cloud and the horizon you use for attitude reference has vanished into grey.

An instructor who cancels that lesson is not being precious. The 3,000-foot and 5-mile standard we used in the study exists precisely because there is a band of weather that is legal and still wrong for a student. If your school cancels on a day that looks flyable to you, that band is usually why.

What to actually do about it

Book afternoons from May to September

The simplest fix, and it costs nothing. From 1pm onwards in June, Van Nuys met training minima 97 to 100% of the time. Shift your standing lesson slot for the summer and shift it back in October.

The trade is turbulence. Afternoon heating that clears the cloud also generates thermals, and a hot Valley afternoon is bumpier than a still morning. Most students find this a fair swap, and the bumps are good practice.

Book the early slot anyway, but have a plan B

If 7am is the only time you have, take it, and agree with your instructor in advance what happens when it is socked in. A ground lesson, a chart-planning session, or a simulator hour is a much better outcome than a cancellation.

Use the simulator

Instrument students should be especially attentive here. If you are working on an instrument rating at $11,700, a low marine layer is not an obstacle at all. It is exactly the weather you are training for, and it is one of the genuine advantages of doing instrument work in Los Angeles in the summer.

Fly inland

Under the LAX Class B shelf and out over the Valley, you are already on the right side of the geography. If the coast is closed, the practice areas to the north and east are usually not.

The honest summary of Los Angeles flying weather

It is very good, and the marine layer is the price of admission. You get 355 flyable days a year, no snow, no thunderstorm season worth the name, and a summer where the sky is unreliable for four hours a day and dependable for the other eight.

Students who train here without understanding that lose lessons in June and conclude the weather is worse than it is. Students who move their lessons to the afternoon barely notice it happened.
