DISCOVERY FLIGHT
An Amazing Experience with Essence Flight Academy and CFI Joseph!! Flying with them was such a memorable experience! From the moment I arrived, everything...

There is no such thing as a sport pilot permit. The FAA issues a sport pilot certificate — 20 hours of flight time, no FAA medical, $8,400 at Van Nuys. If you were thinking of it as an aviation learner permit, this page answers the question you actually had.
The FAA does not issue a sport pilot permit. It issues a sport pilot certificate, and the privileges attached to it live in 14 CFR Part 61 Subpart J. Nobody at this school is going to correct you for saying permit. It comes from the DMV, where a permit is the thing you get before the license, and that is a perfectly reasonable place for the word to come from.
But the analogy imports an assumption that is worth taking apart, because it changes what you should be shopping for. In driving, a permit is a lesser document on the way to a full license. In aviation, sport pilot is not a stage before something else. It is a complete certificate with its own written exam, its own checkride with an FAA-designated examiner, and its own set of privileges you can use for the rest of your life without ever upgrading.
If what you were picturing really was the learner-permit stage — the paperwork that lets you go up and start flying before you have passed anything — that exists too, and it is called a student pilot certificate. It is free, you apply for it through IACRA with your instructor, and unlike a driving permit it does not expire. What it does not do is let you carry a passenger. That is the part the sport certificate buys you.

Most of the confusion around the word permit disappears once you line the two systems up side by side. This is the table we end up drawing on a whiteboard at least once a week.
| What you would call it at the DMV | What it is called in aviation |
|---|---|
| Learner permit | Student pilot certificate. Applied for through IACRA, issued free, and it does not expire. It lets you fly solo once your instructor has signed the specific endorsements for it, but never with a passenger. |
| Driving license | Pilot certificate. Sport, private, commercial or airline transport. The FAA issues certificates, not licenses, throughout 14 CFR Part 61. The card has no expiry date printed on it. |
| The written test at the counter | FAA knowledge test. Computer-based, taken at an approved testing centre. Sport pilot has its own knowledge test, separate from and shorter than the private pilot one. |
| The road test | The practical test, or checkride. An oral examination and a flight with an FAA-designated pilot examiner. Pass it and you leave with a temporary certificate the same day. |
| Renewing at the DMV | Staying current. The certificate never expires, but you need a flight review every 24 calendar months under 14 CFR 61.56, and three takeoffs and landings in the previous 90 days under 61.57 to carry a passenger. |
| Your driver license itself | Your medical, if you fly sport. Under 14 CFR 61.23(c) a valid US driver license replaces the FAA medical certificate for sport pilot privileges. This is the one place where the driving analogy is not just close — it is literally the rule. |
Sport pilots fly on a valid United States driver license instead of an FAA medical certificate. That is 14 CFR 61.23(c), and for a lot of people it is the difference between flying and not flying. No Aviation Medical Examiner appointment, no MedXPress submission, no waiting on a file while a training slot sits empty.
Most of the people who call us about this are not twenty-two years old. They are in their fifties or sixties, on a medication they assume disqualifies them, or they read a forum thread about special issuance and decided the whole process sounded like a fight. The sport certificate exists precisely so that group can fly.
One hard condition, and read it carefully before you spend anything: if you have ever had an application for an FAA medical certificate denied, or a certificate suspended or revoked, the driver-license route is closed until that is resolved. Never applied at all, and it does not apply to you.
We will not tell you whether you personally qualify. Only an Aviation Medical Examiner or the FAA can make that determination, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing with your money. If anything in your history worries you, see an AME first, then pick a training track. The standard in 14 CFR 61.53 also applies regardless: you may not fly as pilot in command knowing of a condition that would make you unsafe.

Sport pilot privileges and limitations are in 14 CFR Part 61 Subpart J. If one of these is a dealbreaker, better to find out now than after you have paid a deposit.
You and one other person. A family of four does not fit, however many seats the aircraft appears to have.
No night flying. A flight that lands after sunset is outside the certificate, which rules out most of what makes Los Angeles beautiful from the air after 8pm.
No flight above 10,000 ft MSL or 2,000 ft AGL, whichever is higher. Class A airspace from 18,000 ft is closed.
Defined in 14 CFR 1.1: two seats, one reciprocating engine, and limits on weight and speed. The Piper Warrior, Arrow, Cirrus SR22 Turbo and Seminole on our ramp are all outside it.
An instructor endorsement under 14 CFR 61.325 is required to operate at an airport with an operating control tower and in Class B, C or D airspace.
No paid flying and nothing in furtherance of a business. If a career is the goal, start on the private pilot certificate at $10,900 instead.
The FAA minimum is 20 hours of flight time under 14 CFR 61.313, against 40 for a private certificate under 61.109. At least 15 hours are dual instruction and at least 5 are solo, with two hours of cross-country training and a solo cross-country of at least 75 nautical miles inside that. Halving the hour requirement is the honest reason our sport package is $8,400 while the standard private programme is $10,900.
Van Nuys is Class D airspace under the LAX Class B shelf, so the 61.325 endorsement is not an optional extra here — you cannot leave the ramp without talking to a tower, and you will be doing it within your first few lessons. Train somewhere uncontrolled and you can finish a sport certificate without that endorsement, then discover Burbank, Santa Monica and Long Beach are all closed to you.
None of these hours are wasted if you change your mind later. Sport pilot time goes into the same logbook and counts toward the 40-hour private minimum. Nobody who starts here pays twice for the same flying.

We own and maintain them. Sport training is flown in a two-seat light sport trainer; everything else here is what comes after, if you decide you want it.

Detail on every airframe is on the training aircraft at Van Nuys page.
FAA-approved, fully enclosed, full-motion. Radio phraseology and emergency drills cost real money to rehearse in an aircraft. Here the instructor can freeze the scenario, talk, and run it again.
Simulator time is inside the $8,400 package, and it is never cancelled for weather. A standalone Redbird session is $189.
Every instructor holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight you fly with them. There are eleven, which is why a Tuesday lesson stays a Tuesday lesson.
You are matched with someone and you can change if it is not working. That is a normal request here, not a complaint, and it is worth making early rather than grinding through six awkward lessons out of politeness.

The same three things come up in almost every review, and the price is not one of them.
What people write about most is the twenty minutes after the flight, where somebody explains what happened and what to fix next time.
Eleven instructors and a fleet we own. Scheduling is the single most mentioned thing in our reviews, which says a lot about the industry.
What you enrol at is what you finish at. On an $8,400 package that promise is the entire product.
Two routes on every option: book it now if you are ready, or book a free consultation and talk to someone first. Financing from $2,500 down through Stratus Financial and in-house plans.
The FAA sport pilot certificate, which is what people mean when they search for a sport pilot permit. No FAA medical required. Aircraft, instruction, ground school and simulator time in one price.
Night flying, three passengers, no light-sport restriction. Needs a third-class medical certificate before your first solo, and it is the foundation for every rating after it.
Our most chosen private pilot programme: 55 hours single-engine, 5 hours in the Redbird and 10 hours of ground school, with the national average built into the price rather than added later.
If the ambition is simply to fly an aircraft alone once, this is it. Not a certificate to carry passengers, and every hour counts toward sport or private afterwards.
A real lesson. You fly the aircraft from the left seat, the time is loggable dual instruction, and the full $229 is credited against any programme if you enrol within 24 hours.
An hour in the full-motion Redbird MCX with an instructor. Useful if you want to test your nerve on the radio before you spend anything on an aircraft.
An hour in the left seat will settle the question faster than any amount of reading. If you would rather ask questions on the ground first, the consultation is free and takes about half an hour.
No. The FAA issues a sport pilot certificate, and its privileges are set out in 14 CFR Part 61 Subpart J. The word permit comes from the DMV, where it means a lesser document before a full license. Sport pilot is not a stage before anything — it is a complete certificate with its own knowledge test and checkride.
A student pilot certificate. You apply for it through IACRA with your instructor, it is issued free, and unlike a driving permit it does not expire. It allows solo flight once your instructor has signed the required endorsements, but it never allows you to carry a passenger.
No. Under 14 CFR 61.23(c) a valid United States driver license is accepted in place of an FAA medical certificate. The exception is anyone who has had an FAA medical application denied, or a certificate suspended or revoked. Only an Aviation Medical Examiner or the FAA can tell you where you personally stand.
20 hours of flight time under 14 CFR 61.313 — at least 15 hours of dual instruction, 5 hours solo, two hours of cross-country training and a solo cross-country of at least 75 nautical miles. A private pilot certificate requires 40 hours under 14 CFR 61.109.
$8,400 at LA Flight School, Van Nuys Airport, as one package price covering aircraft, instruction, ground school and simulator time. Financing starts at $2,500 down. A $229 discovery flight is credited in full against the package if you enrol within 24 hours.
Carry more than one passenger, fly at night, fly above 10,000 ft MSL or 2,000 ft AGL whichever is higher, enter Class A airspace, fly anything other than a light-sport aircraft as defined in 14 CFR 1.1, or fly for compensation or hire. Towered airports and Class B, C and D airspace require the endorsement in 14 CFR 61.325.
No. The certificate has no expiry date. What lapses is currency: a flight review every 24 calendar months under 14 CFR 61.56, and three takeoffs and landings within the previous 90 days under 61.57 before you can carry your one passenger.
Yes. All the time goes into one logbook and counts toward the 40-hour minimum in 14 CFR 61.109. You then add night flying, instrument reference training and a longer cross-country, obtain a third-class medical certificate, and take the private written exam and checkride.
At LA Flight School, 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, Van Nuys, CA 91406, on Van Nuys Airport. Because Van Nuys is a Class D field under the LAX Class B shelf, the 14 CFR 61.325 towered-airport endorsement is part of ordinary training here. Open 9am to 9pm daily, call (818) 290-8249.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
