SAFETY FIRST
Very safety and detail oriented. Pre-flight briefing explained everything there was. To my knowledge, this flight school is exceptional in their ability.
Fourteen miles from Old Town Calabasas there is an airplane you are allowed to fly, with an instructor beside you and the Santa Monica Mountains out of the window.

Hands-On From The Left Seat
Your instructor takes off and lands. Almost everything in between is yours: turns, climbs, descents, holding a heading over Los Angeles. How much depends on you and the conditions on the day.
Your instructor flies the takeoff from Van Nuys and talks you through it while you listen to the tower in your headset.
You fly the airplane. Turns, climbs, descents and holding a heading over Los Angeles, for roughly 50–80% of the flight depending on you and the conditions. Your instructor has an identical set of controls and handles the radio.
Your instructor lands and narrates the approach. Have your own logbook? Your instructor will be happy to sign it. Want to fly less and look more? Say so at the briefing.
Tap Takeoff, You Fly or Landing to see who is flying.
The Route You Fly
About an hour from Van Nuys Airport: Universal Studios, the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory and a full circle around Downtown LA, then west just north of SoFi Stadium and LAX to the coast, from Venice Beach up to Malibu. Your instructor takes off and lands. You fly 50–80% of it.

01Instructor Takeoff
Wheels Up From Van Nuys
Your instructor takes off from one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world and talks you through every step. Once you are clear of the field, the controls are yours.

02You’re Flying
The Backlot From Above
The studio lots turn out to be far bigger than they look on TV, with the soundstages lined up like a small town.

03You’re Flying
Nine Letters On Mount Lee
The most famous sign in the world, seen from where almost nobody gets to see it: level with the hilltop.

04You’re Flying
The Domes On The Ridge
The white domes of Griffith Observatory on the slope of Mount Hollywood, with the whole Los Angeles basin laid out beyond them.

05You’re Flying
A Full Circle Around Downtown
In on the south side, then a full counterclockwise circle around the towers: up the east side, over the top and back around. The San Gabriel Mountains stand behind the skyline.

06You’re Flying
The Roof You Know From TV
We pass just north of the stadium and never fly over it. Its huge translucent roof, home of the Rams and the Chargers, sits right off your left wing.

07You’re Flying
Airliners On Final, Off Your Left Wing
Jets lining up for one of the busiest airports on Earth, off your left wing. We stay north of LAX and never fly over it.

08You’re Flying
Right Turn Up The Coast
The boardwalk, the skate park and the sand, then a right turn up the coast with all of Santa Monica Bay opening up ahead of you.

09You’re Flying
The Pier And The Ferris Wheel
The pier, the Ferris wheel and the beach, straight out of a thousand films.

10You’re Flying
The Mountains Meet The Pacific
Up the coast past the Palisades to Malibu, where the Santa Monica Mountains drop straight into the ocean.

11You’re Flying
Over The Hills To Warner Center
North over the Santa Monica Mountains to Warner Center in Woodland Hills, then east across the San Fernando Valley with Van Nuys straight ahead.
12Instructor Landing
Your Instructor Lands, Then A Quick Debrief
Have your own pilot logbook? Bring it and your instructor will be happy to sign it. Enroll within 24 hours of landing and 100% of what you paid is credited toward your training.
Book Your Flight · From $229Typical route. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.
Calabasas is tucked into the gap where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the western end of the Valley, which is why the town feels enclosed at ground level and looks completely different from a thousand feet. Drive down Las Virgenes and you see hillsides. Fly the same ground and you see how narrow the corridor really is, how the canyons all drain south toward Malibu, and how close the ocean sits behind a single ridge. That change of perspective is most of what a first flight sells.
This is a hands-on flight, not a scenic ride with someone else steering. You start at the table with a briefing on what the controls do, walk out to the aircraft and take part in the inspection, then sit in the left seat with dual controls in front of you. Once the airport is behind us the instructor gives you the airplane, and you fly it: turns, climbs, descents, holding a heading while the ground moves underneath. Takeoffs and landings stay with the instructor.
Length matters more here than in most places, because of where Calabasas is. Sixty minutes at $229 gives you the western Valley, the ridgeline and a good look at your own neighborhood. Ninety minutes at $299 gets you over Malibu Canyon and out to the coast with time to linger. Two hours at $399 buys the coastline properly, from Point Dume back up toward Zuma with the mountains on one side and open water on the other.
The hour is written into a logbook with your name on it and signed by your instructor, so it counts toward the forty hours the FAA requires for a private certificate whenever you decide to start, whether that is next month or in six years. Enroll in training within twenty-four hours of landing and everything you paid for the flight comes off the program price. Nobody will lean on you while you are still taking your headset off.
Prices are per flight, not per person, and you choose the aircraft.

Learn MoreJoin the 101 at Las Virgenes Road or Parkway Calabasas and head east. You climb past Lost Hills, drop through the gap at Valley Circle where the mountains finally let go, then run along the south edge of Woodland Hills past Topanga Canyon, De Soto and Reseda. Come off at Balboa Boulevard, turn north, and hold that road for five miles through Victory, Vanowen and Sherman Way. The airport perimeter appears on your right at Saticoy.
Fourteen miles, and about twenty minutes if you are not traveling at eight in the morning or six in the evening, when the eastbound 101 through the Calabasas grade slows to a crawl. The alternative worth knowing is Calabasas Road into Ventura Boulevard, which shadows the freeway the whole way and never fully stops. If you have time and want the drive to be part of the day, Mulholland Drive along the ridge is slower and much better looking.
The address is 7900 Balboa Boulevard, Suite 108A, on the western boundary of Van Nuys Airport. There is a free car park immediately outside our door with nothing to pay and nobody to pay it to. Several unrelated aviation companies work out of the same complex, so look for the suite number rather than the street number when you pull in. We are here nine to nine, every day, on (818) 290-8249. Ring first if you want a specific aircraft held for you.
There are two sets of controls and yours works. From shortly after departure until we turn back toward the field you are the person flying the airplane, with an instructor beside you who can take over instantly and mostly does not need to. Watching Los Angeles from a passenger seat is a nice afternoon; flying it answers a different question.
This is the part Calabasas people underestimate. Cross the ridge above Malibu Canyon and the Pacific fills the windscreen within fifteen minutes of leaving the ground. The ninety and 120-minute flights exist because that trip is worth doing properly rather than turning round the moment the water appears.
The flight is logged in your name and counts toward the forty hours a private certificate requires. Enroll within twenty-four hours and the entire cost is credited against your program, so the introduction effectively costs nothing if you continue. That offer is explained before you fly rather than produced afterwards as a sales close.
Light trainer, four-seat Piper, turbocharged Cirrus with a parachute, twin-engine Seminole, or the full-motion simulator if the weather has other ideas. Everything lives on one ramp, so changing your mind before the day is a phone call and not a problem. Most schools simply put you in whatever is free.
First flights usually happen in the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Diamond DA20 or the Piper Warrior. They are light and slow enough that nothing gets ahead of you, which is what makes sixty minutes on the controls feel achievable rather than overwhelming. The DA20's canopy wraps around you and gives the clearest view of the ground of anything we operate, so if the point of your flight is to look at the canyons around Calabasas rather than to concentrate on the instruments, ask for that one when you book.
At the other end, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo is a fast, air-conditioned, glass-panel single with a whole-airframe parachute, and it changes the character of the trip completely; the same ninety minutes covers far more coastline. The Piper Seminole gives you a twin, which sounds and behaves differently from the first push of the throttles. And the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator sits indoors for young children, cautious beginners and mornings when the marine layer refuses to lift off the coast. All three are booked through the same desk, and swapping before the day is easy.
Heading southwest from the field, these arrive in roughly this order.
The neighborhood next door has no pavements and a bridle path along every street, so from above it reads as a grid drawn in white rail fencing and dirt rather than concrete. It is the most obviously different ground in the west Valley.
The spine above town carries a dirt fire road that snakes along the crest between the Valley and the ocean side. Once you have seen how thin that ridge actually is, the fact that Malibu sits directly behind your house stops being an abstraction.
Las Virgenes Road disappears into the mountains and comes out at the sea, and from altitude you follow the whole cut in one glance, with Pepperdine's lawns and the surf at the far end. It is the most satisfying thing to look at on a flight from here.
Old Town keeps a line of very large valley oaks that show up from the air as a dark green seam beside the road, with the old adobe and its paddock at one end. Everything around it is newer and lighter, so the seam stands out clearly.
Fourteen miles and about twenty minutes on the 101 east to the Balboa exit, then north to Saticoy. Outside the morning and evening peaks it is an easy run. Calabasas Road into Ventura Boulevard is the reliable surface alternative when the freeway is stacked through the grade.
Yes, for the majority of the time in the air. The instructor handles the takeoff and landing and narrates both, and everything between is yours: turns, climbs, descents, holding altitude and heading. There are dual controls, so nothing you do is unrecoverable.
From Calabasas the longer flights genuinely buy you something. Sixty minutes covers the Valley and the ridgeline. Ninety minutes at $299 gets you across Malibu Canyon to the coast with time to look at it. Two hours at $399 lets you run the shoreline toward Point Dume and back at a civilised pace.
A large share of what we fly is bought by somebody else. Discovery Flight For One is $229, For Two is $299, the Cirrus For Two is $499 and the twin is $499. We can arrange it so the recipient picks their own date rather than being handed one.
Nine years old for the aircraft, and there is no upper limit. Younger children can fly the Redbird MCX simulator at $189 for a sixty-minute session, which moves properly and can be stopped at any moment. A teenager who takes to it can fly solo at sixteen and hold a private certificate at seventeen.
We reschedule rather than fly you in conditions that spoil the point of the exercise, and there is no charge for moving a weather booking. Around here the usual cause is the marine layer sitting on the coast in late spring, which often means an afternoon slot the same day works.
Photo identification, sunglasses and closed shoes. Headsets are provided. Wear something you can add a layer to, because the cockpit is warm on the ground and cooler at altitude. Arrive fifteen minutes early so the paperwork does not eat into the flying.
No. There is no airfield in Calabasas, Agoura or the Conejo Valley, and Camarillo is over the grade with a coastal marine layer of its own. We fly from Van Nuys Airport, fourteen miles away, and Calabasas is simply where our students drive in from. Van Nuys has two runways, a full-time tower and a fleet that runs from a two-seat trainer to a twin.
Pick a length, pick an airplane, and we will put you in the left seat with the Santa Monica Mountains ahead of you. Call (818) 290-8249 or come and look around first; neither commits you to anything.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
