SAFETY FIRST
Very safety and detail oriented. Pre-flight briefing explained everything there was. To my knowledge, this flight school is exceptional in their ability.

Not vague advice about shopping around. Ten specific decisions, most of them made in your first fortnight, that decide whether you finish on the Standard package at $10,900 or need the Comprehensive at $15,900. Several of them reduce what we get paid. They are still the right advice.

That is the whole answer, and everything below is either how to make it happen or how to spend even less than that. The Standard Private Pilot Program is $10,900 and contains 38 hours of single-engine aircraft, 2 hours in the Redbird simulator, 30 hours of dual instruction, 3 hours of ground school and your books and materials, for 40 hours logged.
The reason people spend more than that is almost never the school they picked. It is the calendar. The FAA minimum for a private certificate is 40 hours under FAR 61.109; the national average is well above it, and the gap is behavioral rather than structural. A student who flies Tuesday and Saturday every week keeps what they learned. A student who flies when the mood takes them spends the first part of every lesson recovering ground they already covered, and eventually needs the Comprehensive package at $15,900 instead.
So the tactics below are ordered by what they are worth, not by how clever they sound. The first three are worth thousands. All ten are things we say to students in person, including the ones that mean a smaller sale for us.

In order of what they are worth. Numbers three, six and nine reduce our revenue, which is how you can tell we mean them.
Worth more than the other nine combined. Skills compound when lessons are close together and evaporate when they are not, and a fortnightly student spends the first twenty minutes of every lesson recovering ground they already covered. This single habit is the difference between finishing on the $10,900 Standard package and needing the $15,900 Comprehensive. Block the same two slots every week and treat them like a mortgage payment.
The Standard program at $10,900 is flown in our Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft. The Premium program at $22,500 is flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Both produce an identical FAA private pilot certificate with identical privileges, and the simpler aircraft is a better one to learn to land in. Get the certificate first, then do a short checkout in whatever you actually want to fly.
Not the one you wish you had. If you can genuinely fly twice a week, take the Standard at $10,900 and we will make less money than if you had bought the Comprehensive. If your honest answer is once a week, the Comprehensive at $15,900 with its 60 logged hours is the cheaper outcome, because running out of hours part way is how a certificate gets expensive. Be honest at the consultation and we will tell you which one you are.
An afternoon with an aviation medical examiner. It is the one item that can genuinely stop your training, and discovering a problem at hour four costs you almost nothing while discovering it at hour forty-five is a disaster. Sport pilots do not need one to fly by day, which is its own argument for the $8,400 Sport Pilot Program; night under 14 CFR 61.329 does need a part 67 medical or BasicMed.
Ground school is already inside your package — 3 hours on Standard and Premium, 10 on Comprehensive — so the preparation costs you nothing extra. Do the study early, in evenings, and sit the FAA knowledge test when your practice scores are consistently above 85 percent. Students who leave the written until the end stall at the finish line and lose currency waiting for it.
Every private pilot package includes Redbird full-motion time: 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 on Comprehensive. In the simulator you can fly the same procedure six times in forty minutes and pause it in the middle, which makes it better training than the airplane for instrument scan, radio work and emergencies. We make less on a simulator hour than a flying hour and we still push students toward it.
Your instructor should be teaching you to fly the maneuver, not explaining what the maneuver is. Read the lesson brief before you arrive, know the numbers for the aircraft, and have the checklist flows in your head. The students who do this finish nearer the FAA minimum, and it is free.
Sit at home with the checklist and run the whole flight in your head, out loud, including the radio calls. It costs nothing, it feels ridiculous, and it is the single most reliable predictor of which students finish near the minimum and which do not. Instructors can tell within two minutes who did it.
$8,400 against $10,900, a 20-hour minimum under FAR 61.313 instead of 40, and no FAA medical required by day. The limits are real — one passenger under 14 CFR 61.315(c)(4), an aircraft that meets the performance limits of 14 CFR 61.316, and night only under 14 CFR 61.329 with night training, an endorsement and either a part 67 medical or BasicMed — but if what you want is to fly yourself and a friend around Southern California on Saturday mornings, it is a legitimate answer that saves $2,500 and several months. Most schools will not raise this with you, because the private certificate is worth more to them.
At Van Nuys the air is smoothest before ten, the pattern is quieter, and you are not fourth in line for the runway burning hours out of your package on the taxiway. Early slots also cancel less often, because the marine layer usually clears rather than builds.
These are our published program prices at Van Nuys. Every one is a set price for a defined package, not an estimate.

Before optimising the private certificate, check whether you need the private certificate. These are our published program prices.

Takes you to the point of flying the aircraft alone, which is the milestone most people are genuinely chasing. It is not a pilot certificate and it does not let you carry passengers. It is the cheapest way to find out whether you want the rest.
| Set price | $5,500 |
| You fly alone | yes |
| Carry passengers | no |
| Counts toward private | yes |

A real FAA pilot certificate at a 20-hour minimum instead of 40, with no medical certificate required by day. One passenger under 14 CFR 61.315(c)(4), an aircraft that meets the performance limits of 14 CFR 61.316, and night flying only under 14 CFR 61.329. For a lot of weekend flyers this is the whole answer and nobody tells them.
| Set price | $8,400 |
| FAA minimum, FAR 61.313 | 20 hrs |
| Medical certificate | not required by day |
| Passengers | 1 |

The full certificate. Night, cross-country, passengers, any aircraft you are checked out in. If you want to travel in an airplane rather than fly circuits on Sunday, this is the one, and $2,500 more than sport is cheap for the difference.
| Standard program | $10,900 |
| FAA minimum, FAR 61.109 | 40 hrs |
| Medical certificate | required before solo |
| Logged on completion | 40 hrs |
For ages 10 to 15, the teen aviation course is $4,200 and is the least expensive structured flying we offer. It does not lead directly to a certificate, because the FAA will not issue one before 16 for sport or 17 for private, but the hours logged are real and they count later.
Tactic two only works because the simple aircraft are ours and are properly maintained. Every aircraft here is on our own inspection schedule and flown by our instructors every day.

Single-engine training on the Standard and Comprehensive programs is flown in the Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft. The Premium program is flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo with its full glass cockpit.
Tactic six in the flesh. Redbird hours are already inside your package, so using them well is the closest thing to free training there is. FAA-approved, fully enclosed, and it moves — and it is never canceled for weather.
Simulator hours are built into every private pilot program — 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. A standalone Redbird session is $189.
Half the tactics on this page come down to instruction quality, because a good instructor gets you to the standard in fewer attempts. Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight.
There are eleven of them, which is the practical reason tactic one is achievable. A school with two instructors cannot give you two slots a week in February, and that is where the cheap route quietly falls apart.
They fly here as a career rather than treating the school as a waiting room for an airline class date. You are matched to one at enrollment and you can change if the fit is wrong, at no cost and without restarting anything.

On Google, the same three things come up again and again.
Eleven instructors and a fleet we own means lessons happen when we say they will — which is tactic one made possible.
The most repeated compliment in our reviews is not the aircraft or the price — it is the debrief.
The number you enroll at is the number you finish at. Reviewers mention this constantly.
An eye-catching hourly number that is dry, billed on Hobbs, with ground instruction charged on top is more expensive than a package with everything already inside it. Compare the total price of the certificate, not the number on the poster.
The slowest students pay the most, every time. If you cannot commit to weekly flying for the next eight months, it is genuinely cheaper to wait until you can than to start now and drift.
Ownership starts making financial sense somewhere north of 150 to 200 hours a year. A student pilot flies about 40 to 60 hours in total. The annual inspection, hangar and insurance will cost more than the training you were trying to economise on.
Sitting a checkride twice is the most avoidable setback in flight training. A practice oral and a practice checkride with a second instructor catch the gaps, and both are already included in all three of our private pilot packages.
All three produce the same FAA private pilot certificate. Tactic three is choosing the one that matches your real calendar.
The cheapest route to a private certificate if you can fly twice a week or more. Forty hours logged, one fixed price.
Sixty logged hours and ten hours of ground school. Cheaper in the end than the Standard if you can only fly weekly.
The same 40-hour structure in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Tactic two says get the certificate first and transition later.
Every program is one fixed price with the aircraft, the instructor, ground school, simulator time and your books and materials inside it. Enrolled students fly at the $179 an hour package rate, wet, single-engine. Financing is available from $2,500 down with monthly plans, through Stratus Financial or an in-house plan.
A discovery flight is a real lesson. You fly the aircraft, the time is loggable dual instruction, and the whole amount comes off your package if you enroll within 24 hours.
Sit down with an instructor, look at your calendar, and leave with a written plan and a package recommendation. No obligation and no sales pitch.
You fly the aircraft, the time is loggable dual instruction, and the full price is credited against any program if you enroll within 24 hours. 90 min $299, 120 min $399.
One fixed price, 40 hours logged, ground school, Redbird simulator time and materials included. Financing from $2,500 down with monthly plans.
Sixty minutes over Los Angeles with your hands on the controls, logged as real dual instruction. Enroll within 24 hours and the whole $229 comes off your program. If money is the binding constraint, say so at the consultation — we will point you at the sport certificate and an early morning slot, which is a smaller sale for us and the right recommendation for you. Call (818) 290-8249, 9am to 9pm, seven days.
Take the Standard Private Pilot Program at $10,900 and fly it consistently, twice a week, in our Cessna, Piper or Diamond aircraft. If flying with one passenger under 14 CFR 61.315(c)(4) is enough for you, the Sport Pilot Program at $8,400 is cheaper again and needs only a 20-hour minimum under FAR 61.313. Night flying is allowed under 14 CFR 61.329 with night training, a logbook endorsement and either a part 67 medical or BasicMed.
Fly twice a week without exception, take the Standard package at $10,900 rather than the Premium at $22,500, use the 2 Redbird simulator hours already inside your package, and sit the FAA written exam early using the ground school you have already paid for. The single biggest lever is frequency, not the school you choose.
The sport pilot certificate, at $8,400 with a 20-hour FAA minimum under FAR 61.313. It also requires no FAA medical certificate for daytime flying, which removes the one thing that can stop your training entirely. The limits are one passenger under 14 CFR 61.315(c)(4), an aircraft that meets the performance limits of 14 CFR 61.316, and night only under 14 CFR 61.329 with a part 67 medical or BasicMed.
Yes. The Sport Pilot Program is $8,400 and produces a real FAA certificate, and the Solo Certificate program is $5,500 if flying the aircraft alone is the milestone you actually want. A full private pilot certificate starts at $10,900 with the Standard package.
Yes, by $2,500 and by half the required hours. Sport is $8,400 against $10,900 for the Standard private package, needs 20 hours instead of 40, and requires no FAA medical to fly by day. Whether the saving is worth it depends on whether a single passenger under 14 CFR 61.315(c)(4), and night flying only under 14 CFR 61.329, fit how you actually intend to fly.
More than anything else on this page. The FAA minimum for a private certificate is 40 hours and infrequent flyers routinely need far more. Flying twice a week is what makes the 40-hour Standard package at $10,900 enough; flying fortnightly is what pushes people onto the 60-hour Comprehensive at $15,900.
No. Ownership only starts to make sense above roughly 150 to 200 hours a year, and a student pilot flies about 40 to 60 hours in total to a private certificate. The annual inspection, hangar, insurance and unscheduled maintenance will exceed what the training package costs, and you will spend your training year managing an airplane instead of learning to fly one.
Ask for the total price of the certificate rather than an hourly number, because that is where schools really differ. Our Standard Private Pilot Program is $10,900 at Van Nuys with the aircraft, instructor, ground school, simulator time and materials all inside it, and the price is fixed for the duration of the program.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
