A Short Rating, Flown Properly
You already hold a private or commercial certificate, so we can skip the sales pitch. The multi-engine add-on is $5,100, flown in a Piper Seminole, and most pilots finish it in ten to fifteen hours of aircraft time. There is no knowledge test for an added class rating, so the work is a practical test and the oral that goes with it. What you are really buying is competence with an engine out, not a stamp.
The pilots who come to us for this from Canoga Park have usually been flying out of Van Nuys for years already, or out of Whiteman and Camarillo before that. Owners with a share in something single-engine, commercial students filling the last gap in their paperwork, and a fair number of people who fly to Mammoth or Vegas often enough that a second engine over the Sierra has started to feel like a reasonable purchase.
It is a demanding rating flown honestly. Vmc demonstrations, drag from a windmilling prop, the difference between blue line and the numbers you were taught to respect, and the very small performance margin a light twin has on one engine on a hot Valley afternoon. We fly that margin rather than describe it, because knowing it in your hands is the entire point of the rating.

How The Syllabus Runs — Start To Certificate
Four stages, usually spread over a week of consecutive days or two long weekends.

Systems And Ground
Seminole specifics: fuel system and crossfeed, electrical, gear and hydraulics, counter-rotating props and why this airframe has no critical engine. Weight and balance, and the performance charts you will be asked to actually use rather than recite on the oral.

Normal Twin Handling
Takeoffs, climbs, steep turns, stalls, and landings with two engines running. Getting comfortable with the extra speed, the extra levers and the sight picture before anything is failed on you. Most pilots need less of this stage than they expect.

Engine-Out Work
Identify, verify, feather. Vmc demonstrations at a safe altitude, drag demos, single-engine approaches and go-arounds, and engine failures on takeoff roll and after rotation. This is the core of the rating and where most of the aircraft time goes.

Checkride Profile
We fly the practical test standards until the sequence is automatic, then run a mock oral covering systems, performance and aeromedical. Your instructor signs you off and you fly with an examiner out of Van Nuys, usually within a few days.

Getting Here From Canoga Park
15 Minutes And 8 Miles From Canoga Park
Sherman Way east from Canoga Park to Balboa Blvd, then north to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A. Eight miles, about fifteen minutes, and free parking on site. For a rating flown in consecutive days that short and predictable a drive is worth something, because it lets you fly twice in a day without losing an hour to the road in between.
Sherman Way slows a little between four and six with the Warner Center traffic. Roscoe Blvd along the north boundary of the airport is the faster alternate at that hour, and Vanowen St is fine from the blocks south of Sherman Way. If you would rather fly early, the air over the west Valley is smoothest before ten and Vmc work is a good deal more pleasant in it.

The Aircraft You Will Fly
The rating is flown in the Piper Seminole, and $5,100 covers the whole add-on. It is the standard light twin trainer for good reason: counter-rotating props, no critical engine, honest engine-out behavior, and enough performance to make the single-engine numbers meaningful without being forgiving enough to let you get sloppy.
The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator takes some of the repetition out of the aircraft, particularly failures on the takeoff roll and single-engine instrument approaches, which are cheaper and safer to drill on the ground. If you also want complex-single time, the Piper Arrow II is $179 an hour wet for enrolled students, and glass-cockpit time in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo is flown on the $22,500 Premium program. A Multi-Engine Discovery Flight in the Seminole is $499 for sixty minutes if you want to sit in it before you commit.
What You'll See From The Air

Most of the engine-out work happens north-west of the field, over the edge of Canoga Park and out toward the hills.

The big empty bowl at the north-west corner of the Valley, just past Canoga Park. Open ground under you and few people below is exactly what you want when you are shutting an engine down on purpose.

The original commercial strip around Sherman Way and Topanga Canyon Blvd, with the Madrid Theater in the middle of it. From altitude it reads as a denser, older block in a neighborhood that otherwise looks post-war.

Multi-Engine Rating FAQ
The add-on rating is $5,100 for pilots who already hold a private or commercial certificate. Most pilots complete the rating in ten to fifteen hours of aircraft time plus ground, and the examiner fee is separate. If it is part of a longer plan, the Airline Pilot Program at $89,000 includes it.
A current private or commercial certificate and a current medical. There is no FAA knowledge test for an added multi-engine class rating, so there is no written to sit. Recent single-engine currency helps more than total time does. If you have been off for a while, an hour in a single first is usually money well spent.
A week of consecutive days is the usual pattern, and two long weekends works nearly as well. Because we fly 9 AM to 9 PM every day, you can do two sessions in a day without waiting for a slot. Spreading it over months is possible but you end up paying for repetition.
Fifteen minutes and eight miles, straight east on Sherman Way then north on Balboa Blvd to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A. Parking is free in front of the building. If you are flying twice in a day, that short a drive means you can go home between sessions rather than sit at the airport.
North and west of the field, over the open ground toward the Chatsworth Reservoir basin and the Santa Susana foothills past Canoga Park, at an altitude that gives us room. Vmc demonstrations are flown high with clear ground below. We plan the practice area around traffic and terrain, not around convenience.
