This is a short course for pilots who already hold a certificate. No ground school from scratch and no revisiting the basics: you arrive knowing what Vmc is, and we spend the time on the things that actually hurt people in twins. Asymmetric thrust, the drag of a windmilling propeller, and the discipline of identify, verify, feather. The add-on is $5,100.
Pilots come to us from Woodland Hills for this because it is nine miles away and the Seminole is on the ramp here every day. Some are building toward a professional job. Some own a share in something bigger and want the insurance to make sense. A few just want to fly the family up to Mammoth or down to Cabo with a second engine turning.
One local note. Van Nuys sits at 802 feet, and on a summer afternoon when Woodland Hills is reading 105 the density altitude here goes well past 4,000. That is exactly the condition in which a light twin's single-engine climb rate turns theoretical. We would rather you meet that on a training flight with an instructor than on a hot departure with four people and full tanks.
Four flying stages plus ground, typically five to eight flight hours run over one to two weeks.
Seminole systems, performance charts, weight and balance, and the aerodynamics behind Vmc: critical engine, P-factor, accelerated slipstream, the whole picture. This is the shortest part of the course but it decides how the flying goes.
Starts, taxi on differential power, takeoff and landing profiles, cruise management, and the habit of running two of everything. Getting genuinely comfortable with the airplane before anything gets taken away from you.
The core of the rating. Vmc demonstrations, failures on takeoff and in cruise, drift-down performance, and feathering, including the real thing shut down and restarted at altitude in the practice area north of the Valley.
Instrument approaches on one engine if you are instrument rated, plus circling and go-arounds. A single-engine go-around in a light twin is a maneuver worth respecting, and you will fly several of them.
Oral review and a polish flight against the ACS standards. The multi-engine add-on is $5,100. If you are not instrument rated the rating comes with a VFR limitation, which is worth planning around rather than discovering later.

Because this course runs as a compressed block you will likely be driving it every day for a week or two, so pick your slot with the freeway in mind. Mornings eastbound are the easy direction; the evening peak is not.

Book Now →The rating is flown in the Piper Seminole: counter-rotating engines, so no critical engine in the traditional sense, and honest, predictable behavior with one shut down. It rents at $649 an hour outside the course. It is the standard twin trainer for a good reason, in that it teaches the concepts without punishing you for learning them.
The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator carries a real share of the engine-out and instrument work, which keeps the cost down and lets you repeat a failure until the response is automatic. If you want to stay current afterwards, the Seminole and the Cirrus SR22 Turbo are both $649 an hour, the Piper Arrow II is $349 and the Diamond DA20 is $329.
The practice areas around Woodland Hills give you room, altitude and a clean horizon to fly against.
North and west of the field, this is where the airwork gets done. High ground, low traffic, and enough space to lose 1,000 feet on one engine without anyone minding.
The dry basin in the northwest corner of the Valley reads clearly from altitude. A useful anchor when you have been heads-down on a feathering drill.
The tower cluster gives you an instant fix on where Woodland Hills is, even when you are busy. Handy when a simulated failure has your attention somewhere else.
The green ridge between the Valley and the sea. Worth knowing where that terrain rises when you are working out single-engine service ceiling on a hot day.
A private or commercial pilot certificate. There is no minimum hour requirement written into the FAA rules for the add-on, just the training and a practical test. If you are not instrument rated, your multi-engine privileges carry a VFR-only limitation until you add the instrument rating.

Yes, at a safe altitude in the practice area, and you will feather it and restart it. Zero-thrust settings are used instead for the low-altitude work, where an actual shutdown would be reckless. Both are part of the syllabus, and the difference between them gets explained on the ground first.
