A Career Track That Starts Nine Miles From Home
The Airline Pilot Program takes someone with no flight time to the certificates and ratings an airline first officer job requires: private, instrument, commercial, multi-engine and instructor. It costs $89,000. That number is not a deposit or a starting point, it is the program, and we will sit down and walk you through exactly what it buys before you commit a dollar.
Woodland Hills sends us a particular kind of candidate. People in their late twenties and thirties working in Warner Center offices who have run the numbers on twenty more years of it and would rather not. Pierce College students weighing aviation against a four-year degree. The commute helps more than you would think: nine miles down the 101 means you can train full-time without moving house.
Be clear-eyed about the timeline. Training full-time, the flying portion takes roughly twelve to eighteen months, and then you instruct to build hours toward the 1,500 an airline requires. Private Pilot Certificate
The foundation, and roughly the first four to six months, ending with a checkride flown out of Van Nuys. Everything after this builds on it, and this is the stage where the raw stick-and-rudder skill gets built.

Instrument Rating
Flying in cloud and low visibility on instruments alone. A real share of this happens in the Redbird MCX simulator, which is cheaper and lets you repeat an approach into Burbank or Camarillo until it is clean. Standalone, this rating is $11,700.

Commercial Pilot Certificate
Higher standards, tighter tolerances, and the certificate that makes it legal to be paid to fly. Complex aircraft time in the Piper Arrow II, plus long cross-country flying up and down the state.

17 Minutes And 9 Miles From Woodland Hills
From Woodland Hills the drive is the 101 east to the Balboa Blvd exit, then north. Nine miles, about seventeen minutes. If you are training full-time you will be making this drive most days, which is worth thinking about honestly: the eastbound morning run is the easy direction, and getting home in the evening peak costs you an extra fifteen minutes or a detour along Victory Blvd.
We are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, in the hangar complex on the east side of the field. Parking is free and on site, which matters more than it sounds when you are here five days a week. We are open 9 AM to 9 PM seven days a week, and full-time students routinely fly a morning lesson and come back for ground work in the evening.

The Aircraft You'll Fly
Aircraft Across The Whole Program
You move up through the fleet as the ratings stack. Primary training in the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Diamond DA20 or the Piper Warrior. Complex and commercial work in the Piper Arrow II. Instrument and cross-country flying in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo with its glass cockpit, which is the kind of panel you will meet again in a jet.
Multi-engine training is in the Piper Seminole. Underpinning all of it is the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator, where approaches, engine failures and system malfunctions can be run over and over without burning fuel. Outside the program the Seminole and the Cirrus rent at $649 an hour, the Arrow at $349, the DA20 at $329, and the Cessna and Warrior at $269.

Training full-time, expect roughly twelve to eighteen months for the certificates and ratings. After that you build toward the 1,500 hours an airline requires, most commonly by instructing. Part-time is possible but stretches the timeline considerably, and it usually costs more overall because progress is slower.
Some people do, at least at the start. Evening and weekend slots exist, we are open 9 AM to 9 PM every day, and the nine-mile drive from Woodland Hills makes it workable. Most students switch to full-time around the instrument rating, because that rating rewards intensity.
Not for the certificates, and it is not a legal requirement for the airlines. Some carriers still prefer one. Plenty of candidates start at Pierce College or finish a degree while instructing. What actually gates the job is flight time, an FAA first-class medical and a clean record.
