SAFETY FIRST
Very safety and detail oriented. Pre-flight briefing explained everything there was. To my knowledge, this flight school is exceptional in their ability.

A short, concentrated add-on flown in the Piper Seminole for pilots who already hold a certificate, based at Van Nuys, fifteen miles over the hill from Beverly Hills.
You already know what this is, so the short version: $5,100, flown in a Piper Seminole out of Van Nuys, and nearly all of it is asymmetric thrust. Identify the failed engine, kill the yaw, understand properly why Vmc moves with weight, altitude, bank angle and configuration, and be honest with yourself about what a light twin will actually climb at on one engine on a warm afternoon.
Fifteen miles and one ridge from Beverly Hills is the practical argument for doing the rating here. It rewards consecutive days more than any other course we run, and sleeping in your own bed is what makes four days in a row sustainable. We fly 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, so a run of early mornings or a long weekend block both work. Book the aircraft and the examiner in the same conversation.
The local terrain makes the performance discussion concrete rather than notional. Single-engine work goes on over the open ground northwest of the field with the Santa Susanas on the horizon, and the Valley in August supplies a density altitude lesson that no textbook chapter matches. Seminole time is $649 an hour once you hold the rating, and it is the same airframe used for the Multi-Engine Discovery Flight from $499.

Five blocks of work, the last of which is the checkride.
Seminole systems, counter-rotating propellers and why they remove the classic critical engine, and the fuel and electrical architecture. Then performance: accelerate-stop and accelerate-go distances, single-engine service ceiling, and the working distinction between Vmc, Vsse and blue line rather than the definitions.
Taxi, run-up, takeoff briefing and callouts, climb, cruise, descent and landings. Unremarkable for an experienced pilot, and front-loaded on purpose so there is a settled baseline to disturb once the failures start arriving without warning.
The substance of the rating. Failures at altitude and in the pattern, identify, verify, feather, drag reduction, zero-thrust settings, Vmc demonstrations and single-engine go-arounds treated with the seriousness they warrant. Flown northwest of the field with open ground underneath rather than rooftops.
Single-engine approaches, holds and partial panel, much of it set up in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator first, where a drill can be run twenty times in an hour for a great deal less money. Without an instrument rating that time goes into additional asymmetric flying instead.
An oral and a flight test with an FAA examiner, preceded by a mock checkride so the standard is known rather than inferred. The add-on is $5,100 and the outcome is multi-engine land privileges added to the certificate you already hold.
Every figure below is the real, published price. No "call for a quote," no hidden block-time minimums.

The 405 north through the Sepulveda Pass, off at Roscoe Boulevard, west two miles to Balboa, and 7900 Balboa Boulevard is on your right just short of the corner. Fifteen miles from most of Beverly Hills and about thirty minutes, with the Getty on the ridge to your left on the way up as a preview of the ground you will be working over later.
If you are booking morning blocks, and you should, leaving by half past seven keeps the northbound pass clear. Coming home at five is the part that wants planning, and Coldwater Canyon or Beverly Glen back over Mulholland usually beats the freeway at that hour. Parking at 7900 Balboa is free and directly in front of the building, which counts for something when you are carrying a flight bag, a headset and a Seminole handbook. Check in at Suite 108A.
Pick your aircraft, pick a date and time, and you are on the schedule. You fly the airplane yourself with an FAA-certified instructor beside you — and every flight is 100% credited toward training if you enroll within 24 hours.
Full-motion simulator with an instructor. No weight limit, no medical needed.

Book Now →The rating is flown in the Piper Seminole, a PA-44 with counter-rotating propellers, which is why it is the standard multi-engine trainer and why the engine-out handling is symmetric rather than lopsided. It rents at $649 an hour once you hold the rating and are current with us, and it is on the field rather than shared in from somewhere else.
If you are stacking ratings or building time, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo is also $649 an hour and gives you high-performance glass cockpit experience, and the Piper Arrow II at $349 covers complex single-engine work. The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator takes the repetitive procedural load off the airframe, which is exactly where you want to be running the same failure drill over and over.

The ground below the practice area, and the features you reorient on when a drill has had your attention.
The spine of the Santa Monica Mountains directly above Beverly Hills, with Benedict Canyon climbing to it and stopping there. Seen from the north side it is the cleanest boundary between the Valley and everything you think of as home.
A long dark finger of water in the hills above Bel Air, immediately east of the 405. It sits in a bowl with no flat ground anywhere near it, which is worth having registered before you think hard about single-engine performance.
A single runway on the bluff above the bay, inside Class D airspace you will already know if you fly the Westside at all. Useful to keep in the picture when you are planning where a light twin could actually go.
On a summer morning the cloud stops in a near-straight line somewhere over the Westside while the Valley sits clear and hot. It is the most visible demonstration of density altitude you will ever get, and it bears directly on single-engine climb.
A private or commercial certificate. There is no written exam for the add-on; it is an oral and a flight test. If you hold an instrument rating, flying the checkride to instrument standards keeps a VFR-only limitation off your multi-engine privileges, which is worth the extra hour. If you do not hold one, that time goes into further asymmetric work instead.
It is $5,100 as an add-on. Most pilots finish inside two weeks and a fair number inside one, provided the days are consecutive. The commonest reason a rating stretches into two months is a week off in the middle: the drills decay quickly and you end up paying to relearn them. Seminole rental afterwards is $649 an hour.
It is the nearest field with a twin trainer, a full-motion simulator and traffic worth learning in. Santa Monica is closer but single-runway and constrained. Van Nuys has parallel runways, a tower, Burbank's Class C alongside and practice areas a few minutes from departure, so more of your billed time goes on drills and less on transit.
Northwest of the field over open ground toward the Santa Susanas, with density altitude watched carefully through the summer months. Nothing critical is done low over the built-up Valley floor. A Van Nuys departure puts you in position within a few minutes, which keeps the Hobbs meter honest and the drills where the value is.
Yes. The Multi-Engine Discovery Flight puts you at the controls of the same aircraft from $499 for an hour, $699 for 90 minutes and $899 for two. It is also a reasonable way to show a non-flying partner what a light twin genuinely feels like before you spend the $5,100 and a week of mornings on it.
