You Fly It. That Is The Whole Proposition.

A discovery flight is not a sightseeing charter with a pilot narrating over the intercom. You sit in the left seat, an FAA-certified instructor sits in the right, and once the takeoff roll is done the aircraft is yours: turns, climbs, straight and level, on a heading you picked. The instructor handles the radios and takes the landing. More than 2,000 of these have been flown from this field safely.

The natural route from Van Nuys runs south over the Sepulveda Pass with the Getty Center on the ridge below the right wing, then east along the crest above Benedict and Coldwater until the flats open out under the nose. Franklin Canyon, Greystone, the Century City towers, and on a clear afternoon the coast from Santa Monica round to Palos Verdes. You choose the route at the briefing rather than being handed one.

Discovery Flight For One is $229 for 60 minutes, $299 for 90 and $399 for 120. For two people it is $299, $399 and $499. The Luxury Cirrus For Two, flown in the SR22 Turbo with its glass cockpit and air conditioning, is $499 for an hour, $699 for 90 minutes and $949 for two hours. Whichever you take, the time is loggable and counts toward a license.

What The Day Looks Like — Start To Certificate

Allow about three hours door to door from Beverly Hills for a sixty-minute flight.

Arrive

Come to Suite 108A at 7900 Balboa Boulevard fifteen minutes before your slot. Parking is free in the lot at the front of the building, so there is nothing to arrange and nothing to validate. Bring photo ID and sunglasses. The ramp at Van Nuys runs a good deal warmer than the shaded side of Beverly Drive.

Briefing

Twenty minutes at a table with your instructor. How the wing works, what each control does, who has the aircraft and when. This is also where you say where you want to go, so if the point of the day is your own street, or Malibu, or the ridge above Franklin Canyon, say so at this stage.

Walk-Around

You preflight the aircraft alongside the instructor: fuel, oil, control surfaces, tires, lights. It is not theater. It is the first thing every student pilot is taught to do properly, and doing it with your own hands changes the character of the next hour.

The Flight

You taxi out, and from the end of the takeoff roll you have the controls. Climbing turns out of the Van Nuys pattern, south over the pass, then whatever you asked for. Most people spend the first few minutes finding something they recognize and the rest of the hour genuinely flying the aircraft.

Afterwards

Your time goes into a logbook and counts toward a license. If you enroll in training within 24 hours, 100 percent of what you paid is credited against the program. If you would rather go home and think about it for a month, that is an entirely normal outcome and nobody will telephone you about it.

Getting Here From Beverly Hills

30 Minutes And 15 Miles From Beverly Hills

Take the 405 north through the Sepulveda Pass, exit at Roscoe Boulevard and head west two miles to Balboa. 7900 Balboa Boulevard is on the right just short of the corner with the airfield behind it. From the middle of Beverly Hills that is about fifteen miles and thirty minutes, and noticeably less on a Sunday morning.

If your slot is late in the afternoon the northbound pass will be at its worst, and Coldwater Canyon over Mulholland into Studio City, then Ventura or Burbank Boulevard west to Balboa, is the local answer. Beverly Glen works the same way, narrower and slower but usually emptier. Park free in the lot in front of the building and check in at Suite 108A. Nothing starts until you are ready.

Which Aircraft You Will Fly

Most discovery flights go out in the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Piper Warrior or the Diamond DA20. Ask for the DA20 if the view is the point, because the canopy is a single bubble and you can look straight down into the canyons. Whichever you take, it is the same aircraft a student flies on lesson one, which is rather the idea.

If the flight is a gift or an occasion, the Luxury Cirrus For Two is the one to book: an SR22 Turbo with a full glass cockpit, leather, air conditioning and a whole-airframe parachute, at $499 for an hour, $699 for 90 minutes or $949 for two. There is also a Multi-Engine Discovery Flight in the Piper Seminole from $499, and an hour in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator at $189 if you would rather test the idea before the aircraft.

Discovery Flight FAQ

Yes, and that is the entire point of the exercise. After the takeoff roll the instructor hands over and you fly it: climbs, turns, level flight, heading changes toward whatever you asked to see. The instructor keeps a hand close by, works the radio and takes the landing. No experience is required, and more than 2,000 of these have gone out safely.

It is one of the few gifts that is genuinely hard to duplicate. The Luxury Cirrus For Two is $499 for an hour in the SR22 Turbo and two people share the flight, which is the usual choice for a birthday or an anniversary. We fly 9 AM to 9 PM seven days a week, so whoever receives it can pick a time without a negotiation.

About three hours door to door for a sixty-minute flight: thirty minutes each way over the hill, twenty minutes of briefing, the walk-around, the flight itself and logbook time at the end. Arrive fifteen minutes before your slot. Parking at 7900 Balboa Boulevard is free and directly in front of the building.

Van Nuys sits north of the marine layer, so a gray morning in Beverly Hills is very often a clear one over the Valley, which is worth knowing before you cancel anything. If the day genuinely is not flyable we move the booking at no cost, or you can take the Redbird MCX simulator hour at $189 instead. No instructor here flies a flight they are not happy with.

The time is loggable and counts toward a license. If you enroll within 24 hours of the flight, 100 percent of what you paid is credited against the training program, whether that is the $10,900 Standard Private Pilot or the $22,500 Premium. Nothing obliges you to decide on the day, and the credit window is there to be used, not pressed.
