
The Private Pilot Oral Exam: What Gets Asked, and How to Answer It
Ninety minutes to two and a half hours at a table with an examiner, starting from the cross-country you were told to plan and wandering wherever your answers lead. There is no question bank and no score. There is a published list of everything that can be asked, and most students have never read it properly.
The oral is not a quiz. It is a conversation with consequences.
It pairs with the written exam and it tests something the written cannot: whether you can apply what you memorised to a specific aeroplane on a specific day.
The oral is the ground portion of the practical test required by FAR 61.43. There is no fixed number of questions, no time limit and no percentage to hit. The examiner works through the Areas of Operation in the Airman Certification Standards and stops when they are satisfied you meet the standard, which for a well-prepared applicant is usually around ninety minutes and for an unprepared one can be considerably longer.
It nearly always begins with the cross-country you were asked to plan a day or two beforehand. That flight plan is a launch pad: from your route into airspace, from your fuel calculation into reserves and regulations, from your weather briefing into what the forecast actually means, from your weight and balance into what happens if the CG is aft. A good examiner never asks a question in isolation.
One thing to know before you sit down: the examiner is required to cover the subject areas you missed on the knowledge test. Those are printed on your test report as ACS codes. If you passed the written with 72%, you handed over a map of your own weak spots. This is the strongest argument there is for aiming well above the 70% pass mark.

What gets asked, area by area, with real questions
These are the questions we hear coming back from Van Nuys checkrides. None of them is a trick. Every one of them has an answer in the FARs, the AIM or your aircraft's POH.

Four weeks of the right work beats four months of the wrong kind
Almost everyone over-prepares manoeuvres and under-prepares the table. Flip that in the final month.
Print the ACS and go through it with a highlighter
Download the Private Pilot Airplane Airman Certification Standards from faa.gov. Read every knowledge and risk management element out loud. Anything you cannot explain in two sentences without looking is a gap, and there will be twenty of them the first time. That list is your study plan.
Fix your missed written questions first
Your knowledge test report lists the ACS code for every question you got wrong, and the examiner is required to cover those areas. Work through them before anything else. This is free, targeted and the highest-value hour of study available to you.
Build a document you can actually use in the room
Tab your FAR/AIM. Bookmark the POH sections you will need. Saying I do not have that memorised but here is where I would find it, and then finding it in fifteen seconds, is a genuinely acceptable answer. Saying it and then fumbling for four minutes is not.
Do a mock oral with someone who will be unpleasant to you
Ask your instructor to refuse every vague answer and follow every one you give with why. It is uncomfortable and it is the single most effective preparation there is. Use the 3 hours of pre-checkride instruction required by FAR 61.109(a)(4) for this rather than for another comfortable lap of the practice area.
Plan the cross-country like it is real
Do a full weather briefing, a proper navigation log, weight and balance for the actual load, performance numbers from the POH, and a genuine go or no-go decision you can defend. Most of the oral hangs off this one document.
How to answer when you do not know
You will not know something. Every applicant hits a question they cannot answer, and how you handle that moment matters more than the answer would have. The three words that fail applicants are I think so.
Say what you do know, say clearly where the boundary is, then go find it. I know the transponder inspection is on a 24-calendar-month cycle under 91.413, I am not certain whether the pitot-static check is the same interval, let me look — that is a competent pilot behaving correctly. Guessing confidently is the opposite, and examiners are extremely good at spotting it.
Do not volunteer material you are shaky on. A long answer that wanders into a topic you half-know invites four follow-up questions you did not need. Answer the question you were asked, stop talking, and let the silence sit. And when you get something wrong, say so and correct it — an applicant who catches their own error has just demonstrated the exact quality the ACS calls risk management.

Oral exam questions
Self-contained answers, each with a number or a regulation in it.
Ninety minutes to two and a half hours for most applicants, and it happens before the flight on the same day. There is no fixed length, no set number of questions and no percentage score. The examiner works through the Areas of Operation in the Airman Certification Standards and stops when satisfied, so a well-prepared applicant genuinely does finish faster.
Everything in the eleven Areas of Operation of the Private Pilot Airplane ACS. In practice the ground portion concentrates on pilot qualifications and currency, aircraft airworthiness and required inspections, weather interpretation, cross-country planning, airspace, performance and weight and balance, aircraft systems, human factors and emergency procedures. The examiner must also revisit any subject area you missed on the written exam.
Yes. If an applicant is unsatisfactory during the oral portion the examiner issues a Notice of Disapproval on FAA Form 8060-5 and the flight does not happen. You then complete additional training and get a fresh endorsement under FAR 61.49 before retesting. Anything you completed satisfactorily is recorded and normally carries over to the retest.
Yes, for most reference questions. Examiners expect you to know the frequently used items cold but they do not expect you to have memorised the whole of Part 91. Being able to say where you would find something and then find it in fifteen seconds is an acceptable answer. Guessing confidently is not, and it is the fastest way to invite four more questions.
Airworthiness. Being handed the aircraft maintenance records and being unable to demonstrate the aeroplane is legal to fly today catches more private pilot applicants than any manoeuvre does. Weather interpretation is second — specifically turning a forecast into a defensible go or no-go decision rather than reciting definitions.
Print the Private Pilot Airplane ACS, work through every knowledge and risk management element out loud, and fix the subject areas listed on your knowledge test report first. Then do at least one full mock oral with an instructor who refuses vague answers. Use the 3 hours of pre-test instruction required by FAR 61.109(a)(4) for that rather than for more flying.
Before, on the same day. The usual sequence is paperwork and eligibility for 15 to 30 minutes, the oral for 90 to 150 minutes, a short break, then the preflight and a flight of an hour and a half to two hours. If the oral goes badly the flight does not happen, which is why the ground preparation deserves the last month of your attention.
Photo ID, student pilot certificate, medical certificate, knowledge test report, logbook with every required endorsement, the IACRA application, your completed cross-country plan and navigation log, a current sectional, the POH, a tabbed FAR/AIM, a calculator and the examiner's fee.
