Discovery Flights Over Thousand Oaks And The Conejo Valley

You fly the airplane yourself, from the takeoff roll onward, and the Conejo Valley appears under the nose about eighteen minutes after leaving the Van Nuys runway.

An Hour At The Controls, Not A Sightseeing Ride

A discovery flight puts you in the left seat and leaves you there. You run the takeoff, hold the heading, make the turns; the certified instructor next to you handles the radio and the paperwork and nothing else unless it is needed. The hour is logged as dual instruction and counts toward a license, which is the detail most people do not expect. We have flown more than 2,000 of these safely and hold a 5.0 star rating on Google across 100+ reviews.

The run west is the better half of the deal. You cross the Valley in a few minutes, pass the ridge above Calabasas, and then the Conejo Valley opens out as a green bowl with open space wrapped around every side of it. Wildwood, Lake Sherwood, the Amgen campus and your own street all arrive within about a minute of each other, and the ocean sits behind Boney Mountain beyond them.

Two things Thousand Oaks guests usually ask. It makes a strong gift, and a good share of local bookings are birthdays, retirements and graduating seniors from Thousand Oaks High, Westlake and Newbury Park; you buy the flight and the recipient picks their own date. And the Luxury Cirrus For Two at $499 for 60 minutes puts two of you in an SR22 Turbo with a full glass cockpit. Discovery Flight For One starts at $229.

How It Works

How The Day Runs — Start To Certificate

A 60-minute flight fills roughly two hours on the field once the briefing, the walkaround and the logbook are counted.

1

Getting There And Checking In

The lot at 7900 Balboa Blvd is free and you walk straight into Suite 108A from it. Bring photo ID and nothing else. Give the 101 more room than you think you need if you are booked before ten, because the eastbound morning run out of Thousand Oaks is a real commute rather than a formality.

2

Choosing Where You Fly

You sit down with your instructor and pick the route. Most Conejo Valley guests want their own valley: over the ridge, along the 101 corridor, a circuit of Wildwood and Lake Sherwood, then home. On a clear day the coast at Point Mugu can be added without much trouble.

3

The Walkaround

You do the pre-flight inspection with the instructor: fuel drained and checked, oil, control surfaces, tires, lights, pitot. It takes about ten minutes and it is the point at which most people stop thinking of this as a ride and start thinking of it as an airplane.

4

Flying It

You taxi, line up and do the takeoff. Van Nuys sends you out to the west and the valley is under you inside twenty minutes. You will fly the climbs, the turns and the cruise yourself, with the instructor's hands nowhere near the controls unless they need to be.

5

Logbook, Photographs And What Happens Next

Your instructor either takes the landing or talks you down through most of it. Back in Suite 108A the hour is written into a logbook you keep. Enroll in a program in the next 24 hours and 100% of what you paid comes straight off the training.

Getting Here From Thousand Oaks

35 Minutes And 25 Miles From Thousand Oaks

The drive is the 101 east from Thousand Oaks to the Balboa Blvd exit: twenty-five miles through Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Calabasas and the west Valley, about thirty-five minutes on a clear run. Balboa northbound takes you over Victory and Vanowen and 7900 is on the left, with the airport fence directly behind it. Parking is free in the lot outside Suite 108A, with no structure, no meters and nothing to validate.

Weekend mornings are the easiest time to make this drive and also the smoothest air, so an early Saturday or Sunday slot is what we would suggest for a first flight. Weekday afternoons are fine as long as you are not trying to be here at half past eight. We are open 9 AM to 9 PM seven days a week, which makes a late-afternoon flight followed by dinner back at The Lakes in Westlake Village an easy evening to assemble.

The Aircraft You'll Fly

Picking The Airplane For Your Hour

One person, in the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Diamond DA20 or the Piper Warrior: $229 for 60 minutes, $299 for 90, $399 for 120. Two people: $299, $399 and $499, with the second seat alongside or behind you depending on which airplane you take. Ninety minutes is the version we would pick from Thousand Oaks: it gives you the valley and the coast without hurrying either.

The Luxury Cirrus For Two is $499 for 60 minutes, $699 for 90 and $949 for 120, in an SR22 Turbo with a glass cockpit and leather seats. If a twin is what interests you, the Seminole version is $499, $699 and $899. If the weather is against you, an hour in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is $189 and you can fly the same route in it without leaving the building.

What You'll See From The Air

What Comes Past The Window

The run west takes about eighteen minutes and the last five of them are all Conejo Valley.

🏢

The Amgen Campus

A dense block of low white research buildings and parking structures on the north side of the 101. From the air it looks less like an office park than a small self-contained town, which is more or less what it is.

🎓

California Lutheran University

Playing fields, the chapel and the tile roofs sitting tight against the base of Mountclef Ridge on the north edge of town. An easy one to point out to whoever is sitting behind you.

🥾

Wildwood Regional Park

Open grassland and the canyon that drops to Paradise Falls, immediately west of the houses. It is the view that surprises people most, because you can finally see how completely the open space wraps around the city.

🌊

Point Mugu And The Boney Mountain Ridge

Beyond the valley to the southwest: the highest ground in the Santa Monica Mountains with the ocean directly behind it. On a clear afternoon the Channel Islands are sitting out there as well.

Questions From Thousand Oaks

Discovery Flight FAQ

You fly it. You do the takeoff roll, the climb, the turns and the cruise, with a certified instructor in the other seat working the radio and holding a second set of controls. Most people fly considerably more of the hour than they expected to when they walked in the door.

Set aside roughly two hours on the field for a 60-minute flight. The drive is twenty-five miles east on the 101 to the Balboa Blvd exit, roughly thirty-five minutes clear and longer in the morning peak. Parking at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A is free and directly outside. Our hours are 9 AM to 9 PM, every day of the week.

Yes. Every minute of it goes into your logbook as dual instruction, against the hours a private pilot certificate requires. Enroll in a program within 24 hours and 100% of what you paid comes off the price of the training, so the hour behaves like a deposit rather than a cost.

Discovery Flight For Two is $299 for 60 minutes, $399 for 90 and $499 for 120, and you can swap seats partway through if you both want a turn. In the SR22 Turbo the Luxury Cirrus For Two is $499, $699 and $949. If a teenager is the one who catches the bug, the Teen Flight Training Package at $4,200 is the next step.

It is one of the better ones. You buy the flight and the duration, and the person flying picks a date that suits them, which is simpler than coordinating a surprise around a weather forecast. The Luxury Cirrus For Two at $499 for 60 minutes is the usual choice for a milestone. All they need to bring on the day is photo ID.
