A Professional Track You Can Run From Chatsworth
The Airline Pilot Program is $89,000 and it covers the whole path: private, instrument, commercial, multi-engine and the instructor certificates most people use to build hours toward an airline. One number, quoted up front, which is not how this industry usually talks about money. Financing is available through Stratus Financial, and we also set up payment plans in house.
Chatsworth is a practical place to do this from. Nine miles to the field on the 118, housing that costs less than anything east of the 405, and a neighborhood full of people already working in aerospace and precision manufacturing along Nordhoff and Mason. Career changers out of those shops tend to do well on this track. They are used to procedure, to tolerances, and to having their work checked by someone else.
There is a Metrolink station on Devonshire too, which matters more than it sounds. The Ventura County Line runs from Chatsworth to Burbank Airport, so students commuting in from Simi Valley or Moorpark have a way in that is not the 118, and Chatsworth pilots who later end up based at Burbank have one that is not the 405. Long careers get decided by small logistics like that.

Private Pilot Certificate
The foundation, and the stage where most of the actual flying skill is built. You solo somewhere between fifteen and twenty-five hours and finish the certificate over the months after that. Everything later is layered on top of this one.

Instrument Rating
Flying the airplane on instruments alone, in cloud and after dark. This is the rating that turns a hobby into a job. Bought separately it is $11,700, and a solid share of it happens in the Redbird MCX simulator, where an approach can be flown again and again until it stops taking any thought.

Commercial Certificate
Tighter tolerances, complex aircraft in the Piper Arrow II, and the point at which you may legally be paid to fly. Much of the hour building toward commercial minimums happens during this stage, and a field as busy as Van Nuys gives you more ways to do it than most.

Multi-Engine And Instructor Certificates
The multi-engine rating in the Piper Seminole, $5,100 as an add-on, then the CFI work. Nearly everyone gets from around 250 hours to the 1,500 an airline wants by teaching, and that work exists on this field rather than in a town you would have to move to.

Getting Here From Chatsworth
17 Minutes And 9 Miles From Chatsworth
From Chatsworth it is the 118 east and off at Balboa Blvd, then south past Devonshire, Nordhoff, Plummer and Roscoe. Nine miles, seventeen minutes off-peak. On a full-time schedule you will be making that drive early and often, so the surface alternatives are worth knowing: Nordhoff St east or Roscoe Blvd east, both straight runs into Balboa.
Morning eastbound on the 118 tightens between Tampa and the 405, which is an argument for the first slot of the day rather than the second. We are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, on the west side of the field just south of Roscoe. Parking is free on site, which over a program measured in years is not nothing. We are open 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week.

The Airplanes A Career Track Needs
Early hours go on the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Piper Warrior or the Diamond DA20, at the enrolled-student rate of $179 an hour wet. Complex time is flown in the Piper Arrow II. Then the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, flown on the $22,500 Premium program, which is where you meet a real glass panel and modern avionics, the working environment for the rest of your career.
Multi-engine training happens in the Piper Seminole. Taken on its own that rating is the $5,100 add-on. The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is the quiet workhorse of a professional program: holds, approaches, failures and abnormal procedures, flown over and over for a fraction of aircraft cost, and logged. Our instructors are FAA certified with more than fifteen years of experience each.

Flying full time, most people are through the ratings in twelve to eighteen months, then build toward the 1,500 hours an unrestricted ATP requires, usually by instructing. Part time roughly doubles the first half. Living nine miles from the field is one of the few variables in this genuinely inside your control.
No. Everything from your first lesson to your instructor certificates happens at Van Nuys, seventeen minutes down the 118. That matters financially as much as practically: staying in a home you already have while you train is worth a significant slice of the tuition, and the hour-building work is on this field too.
Not toward the FAA requirements, but it helps more than you would think. People who already work to checklists, procedures and tolerances tend to move through ground school and checkride preparation quickly. Several of our students drive straight from the industrial blocks off Nordhoff to an evening lesson.
You must be at least 17 for the private certificate, able to read and speak English, and able to hold an FAA medical certificate. Getting the first class medical checked before you spend anything is the sensible order of operations. No degree is required.
