What A Discovery Flight Is

A discovery flight is a single flight lesson for someone who has never flown a light aircraft. It costs $229 for sixty minutes at Van Nuys Airport, and you fly the aircraft yourself from the left seat with an FAA-certificated instructor beside you. No experience, no license and no medical certificate is needed to book one.

It is not a sightseeing seat with a pilot. Every aircraft on this page has two complete sets of controls, and the set in front of you works exactly as well as the set in front of your instructor. Your instructor flies the takeoff and the landing, because those are the two phases with the least margin at a towered field with jets in the pattern, and hands you the aircraft for everything in between.

The Hour Goes Into A Logbook, And It Counts Toward A License

A discovery flight is dual instruction received, not a ride. Your instructor writes it into a logbook in your name and signs it with their certificate number, and that time counts toward the 40 hours of flight time 14 CFR 61.109(a) sets as the minimum for a private pilot certificate. Of those 40 hours, at least 20 must be flight training received from an authorized instructor and at least 10 must be solo flight time.

What actually goes on the page: the date, the aircraft make and model, its tail number, the route flown as KVNY to KVNY, the flight time in tenths of an hour read off the Hobbs meter, a figure in the dual-received column, and your instructor's signature and certificate number. That entry does not expire. Start training next month or in nine years and it still counts, and it counts at any school in the country, not only at ours.

Forty hours is a legal floor rather than a realistic target. Most people in the United States finish a private pilot certificate somewhere between 60 and 75 hours, and the single biggest driver of that number is how often you fly. Two lessons a week is a very different bill from one lesson a fortnight, because skills decay between flights and you pay to relearn them.

Which Flight To Book

Sixty minutes is the right answer for most people and it is what most people book. The longer flights exist because Los Angeles is bigger than an hour, not because an hour is too short to learn anything.

The twin-engine Piper Seminole flight starts at $499 for sixty minutes. Longer twin flights and the add-a-guest options on the Cirrus are priced on their own product pages above. A session in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is $189, it sits indoors on the field, and it is never canceled for weather.

Ninety minutes is the length to pick if you want to get somewhere rather than stay over the San Fernando Valley. It buys the Santa Monica Mountains and time on the Malibu coastline instead of a turn back the moment the water appears. Two hours buys a genuine cross-country with airspace transitions and more than one controller to talk to.

What Happens In The Hour

Allow about two hours at the airport for a sixty-minute flight. Almost none of that is waiting.

• The first fifteen minutes. You meet your instructor and sit down at a table. They go through what each control does and what the aircraft will feel like when you move it. This is the part that stops the aircraft being mysterious, and it is where most nervousness goes.
• The walk-around. You inspect the aircraft together: fuel, oil, control surfaces, tires. You are learning the routine every pilot runs before every flight, not watching a performance.
• Start, taxi and takeoff. You sit in the left seat with a headset on and hear the tower for the first time. Your instructor flies the takeoff and talks you through it.
• Roughly thirty to forty minutes with you flying. Straight and level, turns, climbs, descents, holding a heading while the ground moves underneath you. You will lose an altitude and get it back. You will be surprised how physical it is.
• Landing and debrief. Your instructor flies the landing. Back inside you get an honest debrief on what you did well and what you would work on next, and the flight is logged and signed.

Weather, And Why It Rarely Stops Anything

The pattern that matters is time of day, not season. In June only 40% of 7am observations at Van Nuys met training minima, rising to 93% by 11am and 97% or better from 1pm. Book a morning slot if turbulence worries you and an afternoon slot if low cloud does. Those two pieces of advice pull in opposite directions, and which one applies to you is worth thirty seconds on the phone.

Van Nuys Is A Class D Field Under The LAX Class B Shelf

That matters more than it sounds. Class D means a control tower, so you hear real radio work from the moment the engine starts and you are part of a real traffic pattern on your first flight, rather than announcing yourself into the void at an uncontrolled strip. Van Nuys has two parallel runways and is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world.

It sits over the basin like an upside-down wedding cake, and staying underneath it is a piece of altitude discipline you will practice on your discovery flight and every training flight after it. Learning here means the airspace you eventually solo in is the airspace you learned in.

Who Should Not Book One

If you have a diagnosed fear of flying, a discovery flight is not the first step and we will say so. Aerophobia is a real clinical condition and a qualified therapist is the right first call; the aircraft comes later, and often the Redbird simulator comes before the aircraft. If what you actually want is the view rather than the controls, say so and book the flight anyway with that expectation set at the briefing. There is no shame in it, and a good instructor will fly more of the hour and let you look out of the window. And if you get motion sick in a car on Mulholland, eat beforehand, take the earliest slot of the day, and tell your instructor before you walk out to the aircraft rather than after.

The two-person flight at $299 puts one of you in the left seat flying and one in the back with a headset hearing everything. You cannot swap seats in the air, because weight and balance is computed on the ground before you go, so decide who flies before you book. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to sign.
