A Short Course For Pilots Who Already Hold A Certificate

This is a short course for people who already hold a certificate, so we do not start at the beginning. You arrive knowing what Vmc means, and the hours go on the things that actually hurt pilots in light twins: asymmetric thrust, the drag of a windmilling propeller, and the discipline behind identify, verify, feather. The add-on is $5,100.

Pilots come down from Santa Clarita for this because the Seminole is on the ramp at Van Nuys and the course runs as a compressed block rather than dragging over months. Some are building toward a commercial job. Some have bought into a larger airplane and need the paperwork to catch up with the ambition. A few simply want a second engine turning before they take the family up to Mammoth or across to Catalina.

One local point worth making. Van Nuys sits at 802 feet, but the ground you are heading for does not. Santa Clarita is around 1,200 feet, the hills behind it go higher, and on a summer afternoon when Valencia is reading 105 the density altitude out there is comfortably past 4,500. That is precisely the condition in which a light twin's single-engine climb performance becomes a number on paper rather than something you have. Better to meet it with an instructor than on a hot departure with full tanks.

An instructor demonstrating single-engine control in the Seminole, hand on the throttle quadrant and the right propeller feathered.
How It Works

How The Course Runs — Start To Certificate

Ground plus four flying stages, typically five to eight flight hours across one to two weeks.

1

Systems And Ground

Seminole systems, performance charts, weight and balance, and the aerodynamics under Vmc: critical engine, P-factor, accelerated slipstream, the lot. The shortest part of the course, and the part that decides how well the flying goes.

2

Normal Twin Operations

Starts, taxiing on differential power, takeoff and landing profiles, cruise management, and the habit of running two of everything. Getting genuinely comfortable with the airplane before we start taking things away from you.

3

Engine-Out Work

The core of the rating. Vmc demonstrations, failures on takeoff and in the cruise, drift-down performance, and feathering, including a real shutdown and restart at altitude in the practice area up toward the Santa Susanas.

4

Single-Engine Approaches And Landings

If you hold an instrument rating, approaches flown on one engine, plus circling and the go-around. A single-engine go-around in a light twin deserves respect, and you will fly several of them before anyone signs anything.

5

Checkride Preparation

An oral run-through and a single polish flight measured against the ACS standards. The multi-engine add-on is $5,100. If you are not instrument rated the rating carries a VFR-only limitation, which is better planned around now than discovered later.

The multi-engine rating is the cheapest serious step in aviation — at $5,100 it is roughly half the cost of the private pilot certificate and it is the rating that unlocks the professional path. If you already hold a private or commercial certificate, this is the highest-return two weeks you can spend.

Getting Here From Santa Clarita

30 Minutes And 22 Miles From Santa Clarita

Twenty-two miles: the 5 south from Valencia or the 14 south from Canyon Country, through the Newhall Pass, then either the 118 east to Balboa Blvd and five miles south, or the 405 south and west on Roscoe Blvd. About thirty minutes when it is clear. Because this course runs as a block you will be driving it daily for a week or two, so take a mid-morning or early-afternoon slot and the pass will leave you alone.

The address is 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, and there is free parking on the property. If you already fly and would rather bring an airplane down than drive it, transient parking at Van Nuys is straightforward, and it is a short hop in from Agua Dulce, Whiteman, Camarillo or Santa Paula. Call (818) 290-8249 first and we will sort the details out before you launch.

The Aircraft You'll Fly

The Seminole, And What Else Is Here

You fly the rating in the Piper Seminole. Counter-rotating engines, so no critical engine in the traditional sense, and honest, predictable manners with one shut down. Outside the course it goes out at $649 an hour. It is the standard twin trainer for a good reason: it teaches the concepts properly without punishing you while you are learning them.

The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator takes a real share of the engine-out and instrument work, which holds the cost down and lets a failure be repeated until your hands move without being asked. If you want to stay current afterwards, the Seminole and the Cirrus SR22 Turbo are $649 an hour, the Piper Arrow II is $349, the Diamond DA20 is $329, and the Cessna 162 and Piper Warrior are $269.

What You'll See From The Air

The Airwork Area North Of The Field

The hills between Van Nuys and Santa Clarita give you altitude, space and a clean horizon to work against.

🗻

The Santa Susana Mountains

The ridge between the Valley and Santa Clarita, and where most of the engine-out work gets done. High ground, little traffic, and room to give up a thousand feet on one engine without inconveniencing anybody.

🛣️

The Newhall Pass Interchange

A useful fix when a simulated failure has just taken all of your attention. Find the stacked ramps of the 5 and the 14 and you know exactly where you are and which way home is.

💧

Castaic Lake

Blue water against dry hills north of the city. It reads clearly from altitude and makes an easy thing to re-orient on after a feathering drill has kept you heads-down.

🏜️

Vasquez Rocks

The tilted sandstone slabs east of Canyon Country off the 14. Worth knowing where the terrain rises out that way when you are thinking honestly about single-engine service ceiling on a hot day.

Questions From Santa Clarita

Multi-Engine Rating FAQ

A private or commercial pilot certificate. The FAA sets no minimum hour requirement for the add-on, just the training and a practical test. If you are not instrument rated, your multi-engine privileges carry a VFR-only limitation until you add the instrument rating, which is $11,700 on its own.

The multi-engine add-on is $5,100. Five to eight flight hours plus the ground work is typical, run across one to two weeks. Flying it as a compressed block usually works out cheaper than spreading it out, because far less time gets spent re-learning what you did last month.

Twenty-two miles and about thirty minutes: the 5 or the 14 south through the Newhall Pass, then the 118 east to Balboa Blvd or the 405 south to Roscoe. Peak times through the pass add twenty-five minutes or so. Parking is free and on the property, which adds up when you are driving in every day for two weeks straight.

Yes. It happens at a safe altitude out in the practice area, and you feather it and restart it yourself. The low-altitude work uses zero thrust instead, because an actual shutdown down there would be reckless. Both are in the syllabus, and the difference between them is covered on the ground first.

Yes, at $649 an hour. We will set out the checkout requirements and currency expectations before you take it away on your own. A fair number of pilots do this rating specifically so they can fly the family somewhere with two engines turning and an insurance policy that agrees with them.
