Los Angeles Flight School: Your Path To A Career With Certified Flight Instructors

Jun 07, 2025My Store Admin

Flight instructing is how most professional pilots get paid while they build time. That is the real shape of an airline career in the United States. You finish a commercial certificate at somewhere around 250 hours, and an unrestricted ATP takes 1,500 hours under 14 CFR 61.159. Somebody has to pay you in between. Our career track at Van Nuys Airport takes you from no experience to a commercial certificate holding CFI, CFII and MEI. It does not come with a job attached, and you should be wary of any school that says its program does.

A Clear Path To Professional Success

The route is not a secret and no school controls it. Private certificate, instrument rating, commercial certificate, then the instructor ratings. You finish holding CFI, CFII and MEI, which means you can teach primary students, instrument students and multi-engine students. Three ratings, three kinds of work. What we deliver is training, aircraft we own and instructors who are here as a career. What we cannot deliver is an employer.

Instructor Jobs: How Hiring Actually Works

We take on instructors when we need them, and people who trained here are welcome to apply. That is not the same as an offer waiting at the end of the syllabus, and we will not dress it up as one. It depends on how many students are enrolled that quarter, how many instructors have already moved on to airline flying, and how you interview. Some people who finish here are offered a position. Some are not, and go to another operator on the field or somewhere else in the country. Van Nuys is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, so there is more instructing work here than in most places. That is a real advantage. It is not a promise.

Why Choose Los Angeles Flight School

We are at Van Nuys Airport, in Class D airspace under the Class B shelf, in one of the busiest training environments in the country. You learn radio work in real traffic instead of at a quiet field. We own the aircraft you train in and maintain them on our own schedule. Eleven instructors work here, so your lessons are not hostage to one person's calendar. We hold no hiring agreement with any airline and we do not place anyone into a job.

Cutting-Edge Training Facilities

The Redbird MCX Full Motion Simulator is FAA-approved, fully enclosed, and it moves. Procedures, instrument scan, radio work and emergency handling transfer straight to the aircraft. A session is $189 and it is never canceled for weather. It is not a substitute for flying. Anyone who tells you it is has not flown an approach in real turbulence. Use it for the parts of training that are about process rather than feel, and you will spend less money in the airplane.

Expert Instructors

Every instructor here holds a commercial certificate or an ATP, a CFI, and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on your flights. Most are logging time toward the same 1,500 hours you will be. That is worth saying out loud rather than hiding. The difference is that ours treat teaching as the job rather than a waiting room, and you can ask for a different instructor if the fit is wrong.

Comprehensive Career Program

The career track runs from zero flight experience to certified flight instructor. It covers:

  • Private Pilot License (PPL)

  • Instrument Rating (IR)

  • Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

  • Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) Certification

Most people finish in 12 to 18 months flying three or four times a week. Fly once a week and it takes longer and costs more, because you spend the first twenty minutes of every lesson recovering what you already knew.

The instructor ratings are where the career actually starts. You teach, you are paid, and the hours accumulate. None of that is automatic.

Regional carriers hire at ATP minimums. Once you hold the certificate and the hours, you apply like every other pilot, and the airline decides.

Program Cost And Financing

The zero-to-airline program is $89,000, fixed. That covers training and every certificate from private pilot through CFI, CFII and MEI, plus time building toward 1,500 hours and the ATP. Financing starts at $2,500 down with monthly plans. There is no airline tuition reimbursement attached, because we have no airline agreement to attach it to. If another school offers you one, ask to read the contract and ask who is obliged to whom.

Admission Prerequisites

You need a high school diploma or equivalent, and you must be 18 to hold a commercial certificate. You must read, speak, write and understand English, which is an FAA requirement rather than ours. A valid driver's license and a background check are part of enrollment. Before any of that, you must meet the FAA eligibility and medical requirements for a private pilot certificate. Get the medical done first. It is the one thing that can stop the whole plan, and it is cheaper to find out in week one than in month six.

Flight Instructor Compensation And Workload

Instructing is a paid job, not an internship. What you earn depends on how much you fly, and how much you fly depends on student demand, weather and your own availability. June mornings in the San Fernando Valley are often overcast until midday and those lessons do not happen. Plan for that. Building to 1,500 hours takes as long as it takes, and the people who get there fastest are the ones who say yes to the 6am slots.

Airline And Corporate Pathways

At 1,500 hours you are eligible for an unrestricted ATP under 14 CFR 61.159. The reduced restricted-ATP minimums in 14 CFR 61.160 are real, but they come from military service or an approved aviation degree program. We are a Part 61 school, so they do not come from training here. That distinction is one of the most misrepresented things in flight training marketing. From ATP minimums the usual routes are a regional airline, Part 135 charter or corporate flying. We hold no agreement with any carrier and we do not find anyone a job. What we hand you is a certificate, the hours, and a logbook that stands up to scrutiny.

Networking does some of the work an employment office would. Ask your instructors where they applied and what happened. Talk to the pilots on the ramp at Van Nuys, which is a corporate field as much as a training one. That is slower than a promised job. It is also the route that actually exists.

Mentorship Programs

You are matched with an instructor, and you can change if the fit is wrong. Beyond the syllabus, the useful part is the debrief: the twenty minutes after the flight when someone tells you plainly what went wrong. That is the most repeated compliment in our reviews. It is also where most of the learning happens, which is why we do not stack lessons back to back with no gap.

Where Graduates Actually Go

People who train here instruct, fly charter, tow banners, fly traffic watch, and apply to airlines once they have the hours. We do not print carrier names or logos on this page. We did not win anyone that job, and the airline made the decision. A school showing you a wall of airline badges is claiming credit for a hiring committee's work.

Industry Events And Networking Opportunities

Van Nuys hosts a lot of aviation and most of it is open to you. FAA WINGS safety seminars, type club evenings and maintenance nights all happen within a short drive. Go to them. The people who take on pilots are usually in the room, and a face is worth more than a resume at that stage of a career.

Aviation Professional Organizations

AOPA membership is open to anyone and worth the money for the flight planning tools alone. NAFI is worth joining once you hold a CFI. Neither is an affiliation we grant you and neither produces a job. They give you resources, a magazine and a reason to talk to other pilots, which is more useful than it sounds.

Join Our Team: Flight Instructor Opportunities For New CFIs

If you already hold a CFI, we read applications. Get in touch and we will tell you honestly whether we are taking anyone on this month.

What instructing here involves:

  • Pay, scheduled hours and students assigned to you

  • Aircraft we own, maintained on our schedule rather than a renter's

  • A busy Class D field under the Class B shelf, which produces competent students

  • The Redbird MCX for ground and procedures work

Our chief instructor reads every application. A CFII or an MEI makes you more useful to us, and we will say so plainly.

The Los Angeles Flight School Advantage

Training our own instructors and then taking some of them on keeps the standard consistent. The person teaching you learned to teach here, on these aircraft, from the same syllabus. That is the whole argument. It is not an employment program and we are not going to call it one.
