DISCOVERY FLIGHT
An Amazing Experience with Essence Flight Academy and CFI Joseph!! Flying with them was such a memorable experience! From the moment I arrived, everything...

Los Angeles gets 355 flyable days a year and has more general aviation traffic than almost anywhere on earth. That combination is why training here is fast, and why it teaches you things a quiet field never will. This is the practical version: what to do first, what it costs, and what to expect in the first month.
Most people overthink step one and underthink step three. Here is the sequence that actually works.
Book a 60-minute discovery flight for $229. You handle the controls for most of it, the instructor is legally pilot in command, and the hour goes in a logbook as dual instruction. If you enrol within 24 hours the whole $229 comes off the program price. Nothing about a brochure tells you what a 20-knot crosswind over Balboa Boulevard feels like.
A third-class medical from an Aviation Medical Examiner doubles as your student pilot certificate application in most cases, and it is the single most common thing that delays a first solo. Do it in week one, not week nine. If you wear glasses or have a colour vision question, deal with it now rather than after you have spent $6,000.
This is where people lose money in Los Angeles. Hourly pricing looks cheap and ends expensive because nobody flies the minimum. FAR 61.109 sets 40 hours; the national average is 60 to 75. Our Standard program is $10,900 for 40 logged hours and the Comprehensive is $15,900 for 60. Buy the one that matches how often you can realistically fly.
Twice a week finishes in roughly five to seven months. Once a week takes over a year and costs more, because every gap means re-flying things you already paid to learn. Book both slots for eight weeks ahead. Treat them like a dentist appointment you cannot move.
The FAA written exam is the thing people leave until the end and then stall on for four months with a finished logbook and no certificate. Begin the knowledge work in week two. Ten hours of ground school are built into the Comprehensive program for exactly this reason.
This is Los Angeles-specific and it is the most useful scheduling fact on this page. In June, only about 40% of 7am observations at Van Nuys met training minimums. By 1pm it was 97 to 100%. Book the afternoon slot in early summer and your cancellation rate collapses.
Everybody in this city claims 300-something days of flying weather. We got tired of the guessing and measured it. Twelve months of NOAA ASOS observations at Van Nuys, 1 August 2025 to 1 August 2026, roughly 120,000 observations across fifteen airports, scored against a ceiling of 3,000 feet and 5 statute miles of visibility — the threshold most schools apply to student solo and early dual work.
Van Nuys came out at 355 days. On the looser basic-VFR standard of 1,000 feet and 3 miles it was 363. For comparison from the same dataset: Burbank 356, Phoenix Deer Valley 356, Santa Monica 343, Whiteman 334, Torrance 332, Hillsboro Oregon 277, Everett Washington 278.
The difference between 355 and 277 is not a marketing point. It is about eleven weeks of extra training days a year, which is the gap between finishing a private pilot certificate in six months and finishing it in eleven. The full method and the raw tables are published in our flyable days flight training study, including the airports where we lost.
No other school in Los Angeles has run this. We publish the method so you can check it.

Averaged over a year the marine layer looks harmless. Broken out by hour, it is the single biggest cause of cancelled lessons in Los Angeles — and it is entirely avoidable.
| Time of day at Van Nuys (June) | Observations meeting training minimums |
|---|---|
| 7:00 am | about 40% |
| 9:00 am | rising through the morning |
| 11:00 am | 93% |
| 1:00 pm | 97–100% |
| 3:00 pm | 97–100% |
| 7:00 am in August | 84% (Santa Monica: 48%) |
Source: our own NOAA ASOS analysis. Read the method in the flyable days study. The practical rule: from late May to early July, book afternoons. The rest of the year, mornings are smoother air and shorter taxi queues.
There are six or seven realistic options inside the basin. They are not equivalent, and the differences show up in your logbook rather than on a price list.
Class D sitting directly under the LAX Class B shelf, and one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world. You learn sequencing, pattern discipline and radio work from lesson one because there is no alternative. Two parallel runways, a control tower that talks fast, and 355 flyable days. Our ramp is here.
Coastal, beautiful, and 343 flyable days — but the marine layer sits on it. At 7am in August only 48% of observations met training minimums against 84% at Van Nuys. Single runway, tight noise curfew, and the field has been shrinking.
A small Class D in Pacoima at 334 flyable days. Quiet, cheap, short runway. Fine for early dual work, weak preparation for the airspace you will actually fly in.
Class C with airline traffic. 356 flyable days, excellent weather record, but you are sharing a runway with regional jets and your training slots bend around theirs.
South bay, 332 flyable days, and the same coastal ceiling problem as Santa Monica for a large part of early summer.
Class D with a lot of traffic and a long drive from most of the Valley and the Westside. Good airport, difficult commute, and commute is what kills training schedules.
Van Nuys is Class D underneath the Class B shelf that protects Los Angeles International. In practice that means you are talking to a tower from your first taxi call, holding short while a Gulfstream departs, and being told to make short approach because there are four aircraft behind you.
Students who learn at quiet uncontrolled fields often fly beautifully and then freeze on the radio the first time they enter Class C. We see it constantly on transfer students. The fix is expensive: hours of remedial airspace work at a stage when you should be polishing landings.
Learning here front-loads that difficulty. Your first ten hours are noisier and more demanding than they would be at a sleepy field in the desert, and by hour thirty you are the pilot who sounds calm on the frequency. That is a durable advantage, and it shows up on the checkride.
It also means every cross-country you fly is genuinely useful. Camarillo, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, Big Bear and Catalina are all inside a short training leg, and each one teaches something different — coastal haze, density altitude, a 4,300-foot runway on an island with no go-around option worth the name.

Less than people expect. You do not need a medical, a licence, or any prior experience to take a discovery flight or your first dual lesson.
Nothing but a photo ID and a willingness to be told what to do. You can book a discovery flight today and be flying this week. There is a weight limit for safety and the booking flow asks about it before it takes your money.
A student pilot certificate, a medical certificate from an Aviation Medical Examiner, and your instructor’s endorsement. Sixteen is the minimum age to solo an aeroplane, seventeen to hold a private pilot certificate. There is no upper age limit.
TSA approval under the Alien Flight Student Program is required before training toward a certificate, and it takes a few weeks. Start it early. We walk international students through it — see TSA flight training approval.
A checkride with a designated pilot examiner and an FAA written exam are both required before the certificate is issued. Neither is charged by the school.
Not a broker’s rental and not a tired airframe with 12,000 hours on it. Everything on this ramp is ours, inspected on our schedule under FAR 91.409(b), and flown by our instructors every day.

Standard and Comprehensive programs are flown in the Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft. The Premium program is flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo with its glass cockpit and CAPS whole-airframe parachute. The Piper Seminole is the twin used for the $5,100 multi-engine add-on.
A Redbird MCX: FAA-approved, fully enclosed, and it moves. Instrument scan, radio phraseology, emergencies and procedures all transfer straight to the aircraft, and it is never cancelled for weather.
Two simulator hours are built into the Standard and Premium programs and five into the Comprehensive. A standalone session is $189 if you want to test the work against your own tolerance for it before you buy an aircraft hour.
Every instructor here holds a commercial or ATP certificate plus a CFI and a current medical, and is legally pilot in command on every flight you take. That is the floor, and every school in Los Angeles meets it.
The part that varies is why they are standing on the ramp. A lot of flight instruction in this country is hour-building — a young pilot teaching for eighteen months until 1,500 hours arrives and then leaving mid-syllabus, which means you start again with someone who does not know what you struggle with. We run eleven instructors who teach as a career.
You are matched to one, and you can change if the fit is wrong. Nobody will make that awkward. Some people need a patient instructor and some need a blunt one, and pretending otherwise wastes your money.
Eleven also means scheduling works. If your instructor is sick on a Tuesday you fly with someone else rather than losing the week.

Read them on Google. Three things come up repeatedly, and only one of them is about aeroplanes.
The single most repeated line in our Google reviews is about what happens after the engine stops. Twenty minutes at the table with the instructor is where the lesson actually sticks.
Eleven instructors and a fleet we own means the aeroplane is on the ramp and someone is there to fly it. Reviewers mention scheduling more than they mention price.
You enrol at $10,900 or $15,900 and you finish at $10,900 or $15,900. Nobody writes a five-star review about a surprise invoice.
Almost nobody in Los Angeles publishes flight training prices. We do, because a quote you have to phone for is usually a quote that moves. Each option below can be booked directly or talked through first — pick whichever suits you.
The 40-hour package. Enough aircraft time to meet FAR 61.109 and finish if you fly twice a week and study between lessons.
Sixty hours logged. This is the one most people finish in, because the national average is 60 to 75 hours and pretending otherwise costs money later.
The same 40-hour syllabus flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, glass cockpit and a whole-airframe parachute. Expensive, and worth it only if you intend to own or fly something like it.
The cheapest legal route to flying yourself. Day VFR, one passenger, no Class B without an endorsement. A real certificate, with real limits.
The rating that turns a marine layer from a cancellation into a departure. In Los Angeles that is not a luxury.
Private, instrument, commercial, multi-engine and instructor certificates in one plan. An unrestricted ATP still needs 1,500 hours under 14 CFR 61.159, and we do not place anyone in a job.
You fly it. The instructor is pilot in command, you have the controls for most of the hour, and the time is logged as dual instruction. Credited in full against any program if you enrol within 24 hours.
Two seats in the back-to-back sense: one of you flies, the other watches the city go past. Ninety and 120-minute versions are $399 and $499.
Full-motion, FAA-approved, fully enclosed, and never cancelled for weather. A sensible first move if you want to test the work against your own tolerance for it before you spend money on aircraft hours.
Financing starts at $2,500 down with monthly plans through Stratus Financial or in house — see flight school financing options. Enrolled students fly single-engine aircraft at $179 an hour wet inside their package. Aircraft are available to qualified pilots who have checked out with us — call for availability.
A discovery flight is a real lesson: you fly it, it is logged as dual instruction, and the full $229 comes off any program if you enrol within 24 hours. If you would rather talk it through before spending anything, book a free consultation or call the school directly.

Book a 60-minute discovery flight for $229 at Van Nuys Airport, then apply for a third-class medical certificate in the same week. The discovery flight is a real lesson logged as dual instruction, and the full $229 is credited against any program if you enrol within 24 hours. After that you choose a package — $10,900 for 40 logged hours or $15,900 for 60 — and book two lessons a week.
Our Standard private pilot program is $10,900 for 40 logged hours and the Comprehensive is $15,900 for 60 logged hours, which is closer to the 60 to 75 hours most people actually need. Sport Pilot is $8,400, the Instrument Rating is $11,700, and the full zero-to-airline plan is $89,000. Enrolled students fly single-engine aircraft at $179 an hour wet inside their package.
Five to seven months at two lessons a week, and over a year at one lesson a week. Los Angeles helps: Van Nuys had 355 flyable days in the twelve months to August 2026, measured from NOAA observations, so weather cancels far less training here than in Oregon or Washington where the same measurement gives 277 and 278 days.
Van Nuys (KVNY), on the balance of weather, traffic and airspace. It recorded 355 flyable days against 343 at Santa Monica, 334 at Whiteman and 332 at Torrance, and it is Class D directly under the LAX Class B shelf, so you learn tower communication and sequencing from the first lesson rather than after you finish.
No. You can fly with an instructor with nothing but a photo ID. You need a medical certificate from an Aviation Medical Examiner and a student pilot certificate before you solo, which is typically around hour 15 to 25, so apply for the medical in your first week to avoid delaying solo.
Afternoons from late May through early July, mornings the rest of the year. In June at Van Nuys only about 40% of 7am observations met training minimums, rising to 93% by 11am and 97 to 100% from 1pm. Booking an afternoon slot in early summer is the cheapest way to cut your cancellation rate.
Yes, with TSA approval under the Alien Flight Student Program, which must be granted before training toward a certificate begins. It takes a few weeks, so start it before you enrol. A discovery flight does not require it.
The first ten hours are harder and the next thirty are easier. Van Nuys is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, so radio work, sequencing and pattern discipline are forced on you from lesson one instead of being bolted on later. Students who learn at quiet fields commonly need remedial airspace training before a checkride.
FAR 61.109 sets the legal minimum at 40 hours. The national average is 60 to 75. That gap is why our Comprehensive program is built around 60 logged hours at $15,900 rather than pretending everyone finishes at the minimum.
Aircraft are available to qualified pilots who have checked out with us — call (818) 290-8249 for availability. We are primarily a training school and our published $179 an hour wet rate applies to enrolled students inside a package.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
