DISCOVERY FLIGHT
An Amazing Experience with Essence Flight Academy and CFI Joseph!! Flying with them was such a memorable experience! From the moment I arrived, everything...

What flight training in Los Angeles actually looks like, week by week: the five stages of a private pilot syllabus, the airspace you learn them in, and the scheduling habits that decide if you finish in six months or in eighteen.
Everyone knows about the first solo. Almost nobody arriving at a flight school knows that solo is the end of stage two of five, and that the two stages after it are where the calendar actually goes. Cross-country planning, night flying, instrument-reference work, then a month of checkride preparation that feels like starting again.
That mismatch is why students who budget 40 hours finish at 65 and feel like they failed. They did not. FAR 61.109 sets 40 as the legal minimum for a private pilot certificate. The national average sits nearer 60 to 75, and it has for decades. The $15,900 Comprehensive programme is priced on 60 logged hours for exactly this reason.
What follows is the honest sequence, with what each stage costs in time. Los Angeles changes some of it, and we have flagged where.

Hours quoted are typical rather than promised. Your instructor signs each stage off when you can do it, not when a number is reached.
Straight and level, climbs, descents, turns, slow flight, stalls, and then landings until the landings stop being an event. At Van Nuys you learn the radio at the same time, because there is no quiet alternative. Get your third-class medical during this stage, not after it.
Three circuits on your own with your instructor watching from the ground. Legally you need to be 16, hold a student pilot certificate and carry your instructor's endorsement. The Solo Certificate programme at $5,500 ends here for people who only want this.
Navigation, planning, diversions and airport-to-airport flying, including a solo cross-country of at least 150 nautical miles. From Van Nuys the standard runs go to Camarillo, Santa Paula, Bakersfield and out over the high desert. The mountains make this stage more instructive here than in flat country.
Three hours of night, including ten takeoffs and landings and a night cross-country, plus three hours of flight solely by reference to instruments. Los Angeles at night from 3,500 feet is the part students remember for the rest of their lives.
The knowledge test first, then oral preparation, then flying every manoeuvre to the Airman Certification Standards. A Designated Pilot Examiner who does not work for us runs the practical test. Much of the oral preparation happens on the ground and in the Redbird rather than in the air.
Van Nuys is a towered Class D field with two parallel runways, sitting directly beneath the LAX Class B shelf. It is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world. In your first three lessons that is genuinely unpleasant — the controller talks fast, the frequency is full, and you will be told to extend downwind behind a Gulfstream.
By lesson fifteen it is the reason you are ahead. You will have made several hundred radio calls before your first solo. You will know what a shelf looks like on a chart and how to stay legally beneath one. You will have been sequenced behind jet traffic often enough that it stops registering. Pilots who train at sleepy airports meet all of this for the first time after they are certificated, alone, with passengers on board.
The geography does the rest. Malibu and the Pacific are six minutes off the departure end. The Santa Susana mountains close the Valley to the north, so density altitude and downdraughts become habits rather than exam answers. Whiteman, Burbank, Santa Monica and Camarillo are all inside twenty minutes for tower variety and cross-country work.
The one honest downside: it is slower. A busy tower means holding short longer, and a Hobbs meter that runs while you wait. Budget a little more taxi time per lesson than a student at a quiet uncontrolled field would. In exchange you get a certificate that works anywhere in the country.

Same syllabus, same instructor, same aircraft. The only variable is cadence, and it is the single largest controllable factor in a training budget.
| Lessons per week | What each lesson feels like | Realistic finish |
|---|---|---|
| Three | Nothing decays. You start where you stopped. This is the accelerated route. | 10–14 weeks |
| Two | The working standard. Skills compound and the syllabus moves forward every session. | 3–6 months |
| One | Roughly the first fifteen minutes of every lesson is spent recovering the last one. | 9–14 months |
| Fewer than one | Progress stalls. Hours accumulate without stages closing. | Often never |
The reason cadence shows up in money is simple: enrolled students fly single-engine aircraft at $179 an hour wet, and re-flown lessons are billed like any other. Two lessons a week is the point where a package priced on 60 hours is genuinely enough. See accelerated flight training in Los Angeles for the three-a-week route.
We counted twelve months of NOAA observations at fifteen training airports rather than repeating the industry's usual guess. The full method is in the flyable days study.
Measured against a 3,000 ft ceiling and 5 statute miles, which is the bar most schools apply to student solo. On basic VFR minima it was 363 days.
Against 93% at 11AM and 97 to 100% from 1PM. In June and July, book afternoons and your lessons happen.
Against 48% at Santa Monica in the same hour. Inland beats coastal in the morning by a wide margin, every summer.
Owned and maintained by the school, inspected under FAR 91.409(b) every 100 hours because they are used for instruction for hire.

Aircraft are also available to qualified pilots who have checked out with us — call for availability.
Three hours of flight solely by reference to instruments is a requirement of FAR 61.109. Doing the scan drills in a full-motion, FAA-approved Redbird MCX rather than in the aircraft is how that stage stops being expensive.
Simulator hours are inside every private pilot programme — 2 hours on Standard and Premium, 5 hours on Comprehensive. A standalone session is $189 and it never cancels for weather.
Each of the five stages ends with your instructor signing that you can do the thing. That signature is worth something only if the person giving it has watched your progress from the start. When an instructor leaves mid-syllabus, the replacement has no basis for the sign-off and re-flies work you had already completed.
That is the mechanism behind most of the cost overruns in Los Angeles flight training, and it has nothing to do with talent. We staff eleven instructors who are here as a career rather than as a waiting room, all holding a commercial or airline transport certificate, a flight instructor certificate and a current medical. You are matched to one and you keep them.
If the fit is wrong, say so. We will move you, nobody takes it personally, and eleven instructors is what makes that possible without a three-week gap in your training.

Seventy reviews on Google, averaging five stars. The three things reviewers keep returning to are all about the parts of training that are not the flying.
What happened, why it happened and what to practise before next time. Reviewers mention this more than the aircraft.
Owning the fleet and staffing eleven instructors is what keeps a booked slot from evaporating.
Nothing gets signed off early to keep a student happy. That is slower in month two and much faster by month five.
Fixed package prices covering aircraft, dual instruction, Redbird simulator hours, ground school and books. Enrolled students fly single-engine aircraft at $179 an hour wet, which covers the aircraft and its fuel. Financing starts from $2,500 down. Every card below gives you an enrolment route and a talk-first route.
All five stages, priced on the 40 hours FAR 61.109 requires as a minimum.
The same five stages priced on 60 hours, which is where most students actually finish. Extra ground school and simulator time built in.
Every stage flown in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Glass cockpit from lesson one, CAPS whole-airframe parachute.
Stages one and two only. Train to first solo and stop there; every hour still counts if you continue later.
After the private certificate: the rating that makes flying in Southern California weather practical rather than theoretical.
Stage one, hour one. You fly the aircraft, the time is loggable dual instruction, and the whole $229 comes off any programme if you enrol within 24 hours.
Sixty minutes, $229, and you handle the controls. If it turns into a programme, the whole thing comes off the price. If it does not, you have an hour of dual instruction in a logbook and a good story. Call (818) 290-8249.

Five, in this order: pre-solo work of roughly 10 to 20 hours, first solo at typically 15 to 25 hours, a cross-country stage of about 15 hours including a solo cross-country of at least 150 nautical miles, roughly 6 hours of night and instrument-reference flying, and about 10 hours of checkride preparation. Your instructor signs each stage off when you can fly it, not when a number is reached.
Two lessons a week is the working standard and finishes a private pilot certificate in three to six months. Three a week is the accelerated route and finishes in 10 to 14 weeks. One a week stretches it to nine to fourteen months, because roughly the first fifteen minutes of every lesson goes on recovering the previous one.
Most students reach first solo between 15 and 25 hours. You must be at least 16, hold a student pilot certificate, have a third-class FAA medical and carry your instructor's endorsement. Apply for the medical during your pre-solo stage rather than after it, because it is the item most likely to delay a solo that is otherwise ready.
FAR 61.109 sets a 40-hour minimum, and the national average sits nearer 60 to 75 hours. That is why our Comprehensive programme at $15,900 is budgeted on 60 logged hours while the $10,900 Standard programme is built on 40. Both cover the same five stages and the same certificate.
Harder in the first month and better afterward. It is a towered Class D field with two parallel runways sitting under the LAX Class B shelf, and it is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world. You will make several hundred radio calls before your first solo, which is why pilots trained here handle unfamiliar airspace without much drama.
Any of it, provided you book around the time of day. Van Nuys had 355 flyable days in the twelve months to August 2026 by our own count of NOAA observations. The constraint is the marine layer in the morning: in June only 40% of 7AM observations met training minima, against 97 to 100% from 1PM.
Enrolled students fly single-engine aircraft at $179 an hour wet, which covers the aircraft and its fuel. Instructional hours sit inside the programme price rather than being billed on top. We sell fixed packages from $8,400 to $89,000 rather than hourly blocks, because hourly pricing is what lets a total drift after you have committed.
At most schools it costs you two or three lessons, because the new instructor has not watched you fly and cannot rely on someone else's stage sign-offs. We staff eleven career instructors specifically so that handoffs are rare, and you are matched to one instructor for the whole syllabus. If the fit is wrong you can change, and we would rather you did.
Yes, within FAA limits. The Redbird MCX here is a full-motion, FAA-approved device, and it is where the instrument-reference stage becomes affordable. Two simulator hours are built into the Standard and Premium programmes and five into the Comprehensive. A standalone session is $189 and it never cancels for weather.
Yes. A $229 discovery flight is 60 minutes of real dual instruction with you flying the aircraft, and the hour goes in a logbook even if you never come back. The Solo Certificate programme at $5,500 is the other option: it covers stages one and two, ends at your first solo, and every hour still counts if you decide to carry on.
The three private pilot packages, what each one includes, the financing options and a realistic timeline built around how often you can actually fly. Sent to you in one email. Nobody will pressure you.
