Discovery flight gift certificates · Van Nuys Airport

A gift certificate that puts someone in the pilot's seat

A discovery flight is not a sightseeing ride with a pilot pointing out landmarks. The person you buy this for sits in the left seat at Van Nuys Airport, takes the controls with an instructor beside them, and flies the airplane themselves. They come back down talking about themselves rather than the view.

What actually arrives

A certificate with their name on it, not a receipt with yours

The certificate arrives as an email, so there is no shipping window to worry about and nothing to lose in a drawer between now and the day you hand it over. You can have it sent straight to the recipient, or sent to you so you can give it in person, and you can schedule the delivery for a specific date if the gift is for a morning you already have circled on the calendar.

It is written to be read out loud. Their name is at the top, your name is on it, and it says plainly that it comes from LA Flight School at Van Nuys Airport, so nobody has to guess whether it is real or figure out who to thank.

One detail people appreciate more than they expect: you decide whether the dollar amount appears on the certificate at all. Some buyers want the recipient to see exactly what they were given. Others would rather the gift be a flight rather than a number. Both versions are the same certificate.

  • Their name, printed

The certificate is made out to the person flying, spelled the way you give it to us.

  • Your name, and where it came from

It says who gave it and that it comes from LA Flight School, so the gift is never anonymous or confusing.

  • A message you write

Whatever you would have written in a card goes on the certificate itself, in your words rather than ours.

  • A redemption code

One code they read to us over the phone when they call to book. That is the whole redemption process.

  • No expiry, and the price is your call

There is no valid-until date anywhere on it, and you choose whether the dollar amount is shown or hidden before we send it.

Choose the flight

Four certificates, and the only real question is who else is going

Every discovery flight includes a pre-flight briefing, a walk-around of the airplane, real hands-on time at the controls and a debrief afterward. What changes between them is how long you are up, how many people come along, and what you fly.

Longer flights are not simply more of the same. Sixty minutes gets you over the San Fernando Valley and back. Ninety opens up the coastline, and two hours will comfortably reach Santa Barbara, Catalina or the desert on the far side of the mountains.

For the one who is already sure

The $2,500 Flight Training Credit

Sometimes the person you are buying for does not need convincing. They have already decided they are going to learn to fly, and what stands between them and the first lesson is money rather than curiosity.

The Flight Training Credit is an open $2,500 gift certificate redeemable against any training at LA Flight School. It is not tied to one course, one aircraft or one rating, so nobody has to make a decision at the moment of unwrapping. It can go toward a Sport Pilot course, a Private Pilot course, an Instrument Rating, time in the Redbird MCX simulator at $189 an hour, or simply the first few lessons while they find out whether this is going to become the thing they do.

It works the same way as every other certificate we issue. It arrives by email, it names the person you bought it for, it names you, it carries no expiry date, and you decide whether the amount is printed on it. Families often go in on one together, which is a quieter way of saying a group of people believe in someone.

  • Redeemable against anything we teach

Discovery flights, lessons, ground instruction, simulator time or a full course. It is credit, not a coupon for one product.

  • No expiry and no schedule

It sits there until they are ready. If life gets in the way for a year, the credit is still worth $2,500 when they come back.

  • Easy to combine

Several people can each buy one for the same recipient, and the credits stack against the same training account.

How it works

Four steps, and only one of them is yours to worry about

Buying takes a few minutes. Everything after that is handled between us and the person flying, which is the point of a gift certificate.

01

Pick the flight and the length

Choose For One, For Two, the Cirrus or the Seminole, and choose 60, 90 or 120 minutes. If you are unsure, call us at (818) 290-8249 and describe the person; we do this every day.

02

Write the message and set the details

Give us the recipient's name, write whatever you want on the certificate, and tell us whether to show or hide the price. Choose whether it goes to them or to you, and pick a delivery date if you want it to land on a particular morning.

03

It arrives by email

Within minutes during our opening hours, 9 AM to 9 PM seven days a week, or on the date you scheduled. Nothing is printed and mailed, so nothing gets lost in transit.

04

They call and we find a slot

The recipient calls with the code on the certificate and we book them in around their calendar and the weather. There is no window they have to book inside and no date they can miss.

Occasions

The gift for people who are difficult to buy for

Almost everyone who buys a discovery flight certificate is buying it for someone who already owns everything they want. What follows is roughly how the year goes at the front desk, and what we usually suggest.

Milestone birthday

The birthday where nothing else lands

Forty, fifty, sixty, seventy. The years with a zero in them are the hardest to shop for, because the honest answer is that the person does not need anything. A flight is one of the few gifts that is genuinely new to them at that age, and the first time they hold the yoke in level flight tends to reset a few assumptions about what they are still capable of. We have taught first lessons to people well past retirement who booked their second before leaving the parking lot.

What we usually suggest: For One at 60 minutes, $229, or step up to 90 minutes at $299 if the number ends in a zero.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day and anniversaries

Van Nuys sits close enough to the coast that a ninety-minute flight gets you out over Malibu and back with the light doing what it does in the late afternoon. For Valentine's Day and anniversaries the Cirrus is the one people ask about by name, mostly because it is quiet, air conditioned and does not feel like a training airplane. One of you flies, the other rides, and there is no dinner reservation on earth that competes with the photographs.

What we usually suggest: Luxury Cirrus for Two, 60 minutes at $399 or 90 minutes at $549 for the coastline.

Mother's Day

Mother's Day, without the flowers

Mothers are given things to put on a table roughly every May, and the useful thing about a discovery flight is that it is not a thing at all. A good number of the women we fly on Mother's Day weekend arrive expecting to sit and watch, then find out in the run-up briefing that they are the one flying. Adult children often buy the two-seat version so they can be in the back for it, which is generally the part they are really paying for.

What we usually suggest: For Two at 60 minutes, $299, so you are in the airplane when she takes the controls.

Father's Day

Father's Day for the man who wanted to fly

There is a specific kind of father who mentions once a decade that he nearly went for his license, then talks about something else. Father's Day is when families finally call his bluff. If he has read about airplanes his whole life, put him in something with two engines and let him do the departure himself; if he just likes the idea of it, the Diamond DA20 with its bubble canopy gives him more to look at than anything else on the ramp.

What we usually suggest: Multi-Engine in the Seminole at $499 for 60 minutes, or For One at 90 minutes, $299.

Graduation

Graduation, when the next thing is undecided

High school and college graduations arrive with a lot of talk about the future and not much of it settled. A discovery flight is a cheap way to test one particular future before committing to it, and it is the only graduation gift on the list that can turn into a career. The hour is loggable toward a certificate, and if the graduate enrolls in training within twenty-four hours of landing, the full cost of the flight credits toward the course.

What we usually suggest: For One at 90 minutes, $299, with the cost credited if they enroll the same day.

Christmas

Christmas and the holidays

December is our busiest month for certificates and the reason is practical: you can buy one on the twenty-fourth and still have something real to hand over on the twenty-fifth, because it is emailed rather than shipped. Schedule the delivery for Christmas morning if you want it to arrive while everyone is in the room. Nobody has to fly in the cold or in the middle of the holidays either, since the certificate has no expiry and most recipients end up going in spring.

What we usually suggest: For Two at 120 minutes, $499, when the whole family has chipped in.

Veterans Day

Memorial Day and Veterans Day

These are not gift-giving holidays and we would not pretend otherwise. What we do see, around both weekends, is families booking flights for someone who served, and for the children and grandchildren of someone who did. Sometimes the person flying has been in a military aircraft before and has not touched the controls of anything since. Those flights are quiet on the ground and talkative afterward, and the instructors here treat them accordingly.

What we usually suggest: For Two at 90 minutes, $399, so a family member can be in the airplane too.

Retirement

Retirement, and the list that was always going to wait

Learning to fly sits near the top of a great many retirement lists and near the bottom of a great many priority lists for the forty years before it. A discovery flight settles the question in an afternoon. If the retiring person has been saying it for long enough that everyone in the office has heard, the office can pool the money and give them the training credit instead, which covers rather more than one flight.

What we usually suggest: For One at 120 minutes, $399, or the $2,500 Flight Training Credit from a group.

The airplanes

What they will actually be flying

Most first flights go out in a Cessna 162 Skycatcher or a Diamond DA20, and the DA20 is the one to ask for if the person you are buying for cares about seeing where they are going, because the bubble canopy gives better visibility than anything else we operate. When a passenger is coming along, the flight moves to a four-seat Piper Warrior or Archer. The Cirrus SR22 Turbo is the comfortable end of the fleet, with a glass cockpit, air conditioning, leather seats and a parachute for the whole airframe, and the Piper Seminole is the twin for anyone who wants two engines on their first flight.

There is also a Redbird MCX full-motion simulator on the field, available at $189 an hour. It is a genuine training device rather than a game, and it is worth knowing about for two reasons: it flies regardless of the weather, and it is a good place for a nervous recipient to spend an hour before they go anywhere near the ramp.

Where it leads

For a fair number of people, the discovery flight is not the end of it

The flight is a complete gift on its own and plenty of recipients treat it that way. But the hour is loggable, it counts toward a certificate, and if the person enrolls within twenty-four hours of landing, the full cost of the flight comes off the price of training. These are the courses that hour can turn into.

Solo Certificate

$5,500

The shortest complete goal in aviation: enough training to take an airplane around the pattern alone. Most people who fall for the discovery flight ask about this one first.

Sport Pilot

$8,400

A real pilot certificate with fewer hours and a narrower set of privileges. It suits people who want to fly locally in good weather without committing to the full private course.

Private Pilot

$10,900

The certificate almost everyone means when they say they want to learn to fly. It lets them carry passengers and go where they like, which is usually the point.

Comprehensive Private Pilot

$15,900

The same certificate with the flight time, ground instruction and materials bundled in, for people who would rather know the number at the start than watch it move.

Instrument Rating

$11,700

The next rating after Private, and the one that turns a fair-weather pilot into a useful one. A good portion of it can be flown in the Redbird simulator.

Airline Pilot Program

$89,000

The full path from no experience to the qualifications an airline hires on. It is the longest answer to a question that sometimes starts with a gift certificate.

There is also a Multi-Engine Rating at $5,100 for pilots adding a twin, and a Teen Flight Training program at $4,200 for ages 10 to 15, which is where a lot of families start after a discovery flight goes well.

Before you buy

Questions people ask before buying

It is emailed, so during our opening hours of 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, it goes out within minutes of purchase. If you buy late at night it will be sent the next morning. You can also schedule delivery for a future date, which is the usual choice when the gift is for a birthday or Christmas morning.

None. Discovery flights are designed for people who have never touched the controls of an airplane, and the instructor handles everything that needs handling. They will be given the controls in the air, and the instructor can take them back at any moment. The only preparation required is showing up.

No. The certificate never expires. There is no valid-until date printed on it and no window the recipient has to book inside. When they are ready they call us at (818) 290-8249 with the code on the certificate and we find a slot that suits them.

Yes. If you buy a 60-minute flight and the recipient decides they want 90 or 120 minutes, or wants to move from a training aircraft to the Cirrus, they can pay the difference between the two prices when they book. Nothing you have already bought is lost in the change.

There are. Individual weight is limited to 180 lb, combined passenger weight to 370 lb, and a flight can carry a maximum of two passengers. We cannot fly children under 5. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian present. US flyers over 18 need government-issued photo identification and non-US flyers need a passport.

Both. You can have the certificate sent straight to the recipient, or to yourself so you can hand it over in person, and you can set the date it is delivered. You also choose whether the dollar amount is printed on the certificate or left off it entirely, which many buyers prefer.

Certificates are non-refundable, and because each one carries a unique code they cannot be replaced if the email is lost, so keep it somewhere sensible. They can, however, be transferred: if the person you bought it for cannot use it, they can pass it to someone else and we will fly whoever turns up with the code.

We reschedule at no cost. Nobody is charged for a flight the weather cancels, and there is no penalty for a day that does not work out. If the recipient needs to move a booking themselves, rescheduling is free with 48 hours notice; inside 48 hours a $50 rebooking fee applies.

Certificates start at $229, arrive by email within minutes, never expire, and credit in full toward training if the person decides this is the thing they want to do. If you are not sure which flight suits them, call and tell us about the person. We are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite 108A, Van Nuys, and we answer the phone from 9 AM to 9 PM every day of the week.
